Castello di Compiano is on the top of Compiano's hill, in the province of Parma, northern Italy.
It is believed to have been built in the early Middles Ages. It first belonged to the Malaspina family, then to the Commune of Piacenza and, finally, to the Landi family which ruled the area for 425 consecutive years, eventually forming a small independent principality, the Landi State.
Between the 16th and the 17th centuries, Compiano was in its prime, and minted its own currency, opened state schools and started a pawn system. In the 18th century Compiano passed from the Farnese to the Borbone family, and was then annexed to the realm of Maria Luigia of Austria, then Duchess of Parma, who used the castle as a State prison for Carbonari captives in 1821.
Before World War II it was used as a girl's orphanage. After the war ended, the school was closed down and the castle was bought by Marchioness Lina Raimondi Gambarotta who, after her death in 1987, left it to the Compiano's Municipality.

It became the property of the Curia and the seat of female College of the Sacred Heart of Compiano after the unification of Italy. The Marchioness Lina Raimondi Gambarotta bought, transforming it into a private residence. At his death he was donated to the City of Compiano. The lounges, rich in works of art, were opened to the public. Since 2002 the collection was enriched by an area museum dedicated to Freemasonry.

The backstory on how I found this place:
While I was in Borgotaro for the Mushroom Festival ( I was able to get my Porcini filled body into the car for a quick 15 minute drive to Compiano on the recommendation from a few locals. You have to go ... there is a castle, with a pool party. I mean, you had me at castle, but castle pool party sounds like if Fellini was going to throw the next Fyre festival. I was in.
My friends and I climbed up the mountain through the Taro valley, and before we knew it we were presented with the most darling medieval town on the ridge of a mountain. Actually, the castle dates back to the 800's so technically it would be Roman. In any case it was beautiful, and strangely, all ours.
Not another human in sight we walked the two ridge-crest streets marveling at how manicured and well kept the city was. Stopping here or there to take in the views before heading up to the pinnacle to see this massive stone castle/hotel that hovered above us.
I'm so sorry, the young girl behind the desk lamented, the pool parties are done for the season. You are too late. It was a shame, but she did let us look around and check out one of the rooms which was stunning. Each named after a different noble family, they are appointed in complete regal style, but with modern conveniences. Yes, you can have your cake and eat it too here at Compiano. We also popped into the grand dining hall affectionately named the grotto di ceramice, for all the beautiful hard fired porcelain plates that dress the dark oak walls. This place was amazing.
Besides dope-ass pool parties with DJ's they have a ton of cultural events, like a stone mason tour, culinary tour, and garden tours that they offer throughout the season. There are three separate museums, and some of the best eating you can do in the valley here in Compiano. How I had never heard of this cornucopia of good times I will never know.
Compiano is one of those hidden gems that isn't trying to hide, but happens to be in a region less tread by Instagram influencers and tourists alike. It's the gold a traveller well tread is looking for, where locals are excited to see you and share their treasure that they've kept safe for your eventual arrival. I will definitely be back next year, hopefully it will not be found by the Kardashians, and rooms will still start at around 150 USD a night, which anyone will say is a fair price to sleep in a beautiful piece of history.

Descrizione
Il castello di Compiano è una fortificazione strettamente collegata al piccolo borgo di Compiano dell'Alta Val di Taro, in provincia di Parma.
La prima testimonianza del castello risale al 1141 quando era possesso della famiglia Malaspina.
Di forma quadrangolare irregolare costruito intorno al cortile interno, tre torri, una semicircolare, una quadrata e una base circolare sporgono dagli angoli.
L'accesso è consentito da un ponte in muratura preceduto da un rivellino semicircolare.All'interno saloni riccamente decorati ospitano arredi d'antiquariato.
Alcuni locali ospitano anche un museo massonico.

Un po' di storia:
Una storia affascinante... di Compiano abbiamo notizie storiche certe dal secolo XI, nei documenti appare già un borgo fortificato con giurisdizione sull'alta valle del taro, ma l'analisi muraria del castello ci mostra la presenza di un torrione di epoca carolingia.
Attorno al mille Compiano è dei Malaspina; quindi, nel XI sec.,del Comune di Piacenza. Nella prima metà del XV sec., con Ubertino Landi, inizia il dominio della famiglia che durerà 452 anni, la più longeva Signoria d'Italia. All'inizio del '400 si affermò il predominio dei Visconti che relegarono in secondo piano i Landi nei loro territori. Il XVI e XVII sec. furono secoli di splendore, Compiano battè propria moneta, ebbe scuole pubbliche e un monte di pietà. Alle soglie del '700 Compiano passò ai Farnese a da quel momento iniziò il declino del borgo. Sotto il ducato di Maria Luigia il castello diventò prigione di stato dove vennero rinchiusi i carbonari dei moti del 1821. Durante la II guerra mondiale il paese riacquistò importanza e il 25 giugno 1944 Compiano divenne capitale del Territorio libero della Valtaro. Nel dopoguerra il collegio delle fanciulle insediato nel castello venne chiuso e il maniero fu acquistato dalla Marchesa Lina Raimondi Gambarotta che nel 1987, data della sua morte, lo lasciò al Comune. Attualmente il castello è aperto al pubblico con visite guidate. All'interno risiede la collezione Gambarotta, mobilio e oggetti dell'ex proprietaria, la mostra Orizzonti inglesi, oggetti della massoneria inglese, la mostra di monete coniate nella zecca di Compiano. Recentemente il Principe ereditario di Monaco, Alberto Grimaldi, ha fatto visita alla Rocca: questo per rinsaldare le antiche radici comuni, partite appunto da Compiano.
Le principali vie di collegamento con il capoluogo sono:
Autostrada A15 Parma-La Spezia, uscita Borgotaro, il capoluogo dista 23 Km dal casello ed è raggiungibile con una nuova e moderna strada che scorre lungo le sponde del fiume Taro ed è percorribile in 20 minuti di auto.
La stazione F.S. più vicina è quella di Borgotaro sulla Parma- La Spezia, la quale dista 10 Km, ed è comodamente servita con fermate di treni in partenza da Milano, Bologna, Genova, Livorno e Firenze.

Parma 68 km (50 minuti), La Spezia 80 km (1 ora e 10 minuti), Milano 180 km (1 ora e 45 minuti), Chiavari 45 km (1 ora), Genova 160 km (1 ora e 40 minuti), Bologna 155 km (1 ora e 40 minuti), Firenze 150 km (1 ora e 50 minuti).
