About this course
We can read a city in a number of ways: in its plan, in the buildings that make its streets and public spaces, in the skyline. We can ask, what are the buildings or spaces saying? How do they say it? How does it all stitch together?
In this architecture course you will learn how to “read” Rome, an ancient city, reborn in the fifteenth century and reshaped substantially in the following three centuries. You will discover how Renaissance and Baroque Rome’s urban form, art, and architecture projected the city’s image of itself to its citizens (urbi) and the world (orbi).
Popes, architects, scholars and sculptors invested in Rome a variety of narratives that strove to explain the city’s history, convince its citizens and visitors of its harmony, and exhort society at large to share in and shape its destiny. The city that resulted became a destination for pilgrims and Grand Tourists, and still is today.
The Meaning of Rome: The Renaissance and Baroque City is organized around three themes—the city and memory, the city as reliquary, and the city as theater. In uncovering some of the meaning of Rome, you will be equipped with the skills necessary to consider how our own cities and communities are, or could be, meaningful. You will come away from this course not only better informed about the cities of the past, but also better equipped to think about the cities of the present and the future.
Students who successfully complete all of the required course assignments will have the opportunity to compile a Digication eportfolio and earn a digital badge.

Giuseppe Vasi: A collection of 135 etchings (HD)
Description: Giuseppe Vasi was an Italian engraver and painter born and trained in Sicily. He received a classical education in his hometown of Corleone and trained as a printmaker in nearby Palermo, perhaps under the tutelage of the etchers Antonino Bova and Francesco Cichè. He moved to Rome in 1736, already an established printmaker, and spent most of his career documenting the urban landscape of the city in engravings. Through his patron, the politically and culturally influential Cardinal Troiano Acquaviva d’Aragona, Vasi met other artists working in Rome, such as Sebastiano Conca, Ferdinando Fuga, and Luigi Vanvitelli. He was also influenced by his predecessors, including Giovanni Paolo Panini, Giovanni Battista Falda and Gaspar Vanvitelli, and by the tradition of _vedutismo_ that these figures pioneered. During the early 1740s Vasi also served as mentor to the young Giovanni Battista Piranesi, to whom he taught the technique of single-cut engraving.
Vasi’s output can be organized into two categories, the first being his engravings of ephemeral structures, such as those used in the festival of the Chinea, while the second and more well-known and widely disseminated were his views of sites throughout Rome. Vasi’s first book, _Vedute del Tevere_ (1741-43), was a collection of these views. This book prefigured his later and most well known work, _Della Magnificenze di Roma Antica e Moderna_ (1747-61), a collection of 238 plates that was published in ten volumes. Vasi recorded all types of architecture and organized these images of contemporary Rome by subject, with each volume representing a different category of architecture. This comprehensive project provides one of the most complete views of eighteenth-century Rome. It acts as a pictorial supplement to Giovanni Battista Nolli’s famous map of Rome, _Pianta Grande_, completed in 1748. Nolli even supplied Vasi with measurements to aid in the drafting of his views of the city. In 1765 Vasi created a large, panoramic view of Rome for King Charles III of Spain, the _Prospetto dell’alma città di Roma_. The panorama, which measures 102.5 x 261.5 cm, consists of 437 engraved plates and is accompanied by several texts written by Vasi in the form of an _Itinerario_.
Over the course of his forty-six year career, Vasi established himself as one of the principle engravers of Rome. In addition to his own great works, Vasi collaborated with other printmakers such as Philothèe-Francois Duflos and Louis-Joesph Le Lorrain, and through his workshop contributed to such important books as Niccola Zabaglia’s 1743 _Castelli e Ponti_ and Giuseppe Bianchini’s _Evangeliario Quadruplex_ (1749). Through his extensive and didactic body of work, Vasi illuminated the urban and architectural landscape of eighteenth-century Rome, and through his relationships with patrons, publishers, and other artists he left his mark on the print culture of the city.

The Silk Road and Ancient Trade: Crash Course World History #9
The Silk Road and Ancient Trade: In which John Green teaches you about the so-called Silk Road, a network of trade routes where goods such as ivory, silver, iron, wine, and yes, silk were exchanged across the ancient world, from China to the West. Along with all these consumer goods, things like disease and ideas made the trip as well. As is his custom, John ties the Silk Road to modern life, and the ways that we get our stuff today.

Check Out the NEW FERRARI ROMA! | FIRST LOOK
This is the brand new Ferrari Roma and a very first look to check it out! Join me at the launch in Rome, Italy to check out the new 2+ Sports car, a new segment for Ferrari with their latest supercar. Inspired by Ferraris of the 1960s, with design and technology from the Monza SP1/SP2 and SF90 Stradale, it's sure to be a huge success!
Inspired by the 1960s 250 GT 2+2, the new Roma offers a sports-GT package with the latest technology and comforts combined with the award winning 3.9l TT V8. In this specification it produces 620hp and 760nm which through the new 8spd DCT means 0-100km/h in 3.4s and 0-200km/h in 9.3s before going onto a top speed of over 320km/h.
The exterior features a new style design language with hints of the recently launched Monza SP1 and SP2 with the narrow headlights and aggressively angled front grille. However it's a new shape, that of an elegant grand tourer with an extended bonnet, the seating position back towards the rear axle and a fastback style roof line.
On the inside, inherited from the recent SF90 Stradale we can find the latest touch control steering wheel along with curved 16 dashboard display and in this case an 8.4 portrait central infotainment system. It includes a 5 stage Manettino including Race as well as SSC 6.0 (Slip Slide Control).
Presented to the world in Rome, the Ferrari Roma encompases the feeling of 'La Nuova Dolce Vita' and I'd expect it is going to be an instant success and open the brand to new markets competing against the likes of the Aston Martin DB11, AMG GT C, Bentley Continental GT and Porsche 911 Turbo S. Join me for a first look and walkaround of the brand new introduction to Ferrari's line-up to get a feel for what it's all about!
Thanks for watching, Tim

Video of the ambientation at the exhibition organigramma x ontologia x ontology organization, a.r. living concept aesthetics room, Bracciano Rome Italy, 2014.
connecting times, 25th May 1950 and 23rd January 2012 is an ambientation with hanging ancient lace, projection of an b/w image and fotowork. It is an art project about real time and the subjective psychology of the person. Different times, different people, intersection of new relationships and linkages which connect the various dimensions in their deepest essence, are the concepts of this work.
Images may be memories or ideas, living moments belonged to other constellations, transferring to unknown human relationships, they may be insights, memories of a dream, expression of the self in a new life characterized by the subjectivity of the moment, linked to the existence of the person.

Clifford Ando | The Long Defeat: The Fall of the Roman Empire
Clifford Ando, David B. and Clara E. Stern Professor; Professor of Classics, University of Chicago speaks at third lecture in our four-part series: Why Did Civilizations Collapse: Internal Decay or External Forces? The Long Defeat: The Fall of the Roman Empire in East and West.
The Roman Empire remains one of the world's longest lived polities. Its collapse has therefore endured as a great historical puzzle. Was it barbarians or internal decay? Or was Christianity to blame? The lecture will explore a range of theories and consider in detail why the two famous theories, those of St. Augustine and Edward Gibbon, have found so little favor.
