Guftagoo Jari Rahe | Keep Talking | Conflictorium
The Gool Lodge, which is located in Mirzapur, at the heart of the ‘Old City’ of Ahmedabad, was the home and studio of Bachuben Nagarwala, the first professionally trained hair stylist in the city of Ahmedabad. The Conflictorium – Museum of Conflict is housed in the Gool Lodge. The museum has seven experiential galleries on the ground floor, each designed to provoke conversations on conflict, not only out there, but also within. The first floor consists of gallery spaces, residency rooms and a 40-seater auditorium, utilized for events such as exhibitions on various themes, workshops, book readings, cinema screenings and performances, from time-to-time.
As a physical space, the Conflictorium facilitates interdisciplinary discourse by bringing together different stakeholders for the cause of peace. As a discursive space, it produces ideas through performances, workshops and exhibitions hosted within its premises; while also providing a medium through which different perspectives come to light, especially for researchers, writers, artists and others actively seeking such a space. Every event contributes to knowledge creation in various forms. A paradigm shift is sought where gaps are very obvious. Many of our efforts are a testament to how dialogue through art practice can bridge differences. Comfortable inequity is broken by recognizing and acknowledging this tug of war between the mainstream and the marginalized, through facilitation of dialogue between them.
Since 2013, having hosted over 50,000 visitors in the physical space, we have showcased over 300 events ranging from exhibitions, workshops, book readings and cinema screenings to talks, that reflect this ethos and are currently being archived, on and offline, to be made part of the public domain for greater outreach.

Panellist Avni Sethi, Dancer and Founder, Conflictorium at the IFA conference
Panellist Avni Sethi, Dancer and Founder, Conflictorium speaks at the session 'Re-Imagining Journeys: Futures of Collections in Archives and Museums' at Archives and Museums—Old Routes/New Journeys: A Conference on Critical and Creative Approaches to Making Collections Public.
The considered the role of archives and museums in the 21st century – can these spaces be reinvented to reflect the challenges of the contemporary world? Is it ‘space’ first and ‘art’ second, or can it be the other way round? Is it possible to think of a new notion of these spaces that do not set out to ‘monumentalise’, but rather ‘lends a voice and listens to those who have none?’
The conference was organised by India Foundation for the Arts (IFA) in collaboration with Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, New Delhi and supported by Tata Trusts, Titan Company Limited and Ambedkar University Delhi on March 07 and 08, 2018 at Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, New Delhi.
Ahmedabad: Danseuse Avni Sethi questions Love Jihad
For the past several days, the city's walls have been painted with graffiti that reads `Hindu daughters beware of love jihad' in Gujarati. However, Avni Sethi, a Kathak dancer and founder of Conflictorium — a museum dedicated to conflict — questioned the propaganda through her dance performance at five such spots in the city.
Using the graffiti as her backdrop, Sethi danced to the classic song Pyaar kiya to darna kya from the movie Mughal-e-Azam. She performed at five prominent spots where the graffiti is displayed: next to the main roads near Law Garden, Ashram Road outside HK Arts College, Reform Club, Netaji Marg and Panchvati.

Transcending marginalisation via theatre | Atish Indrekar | TEDxDAIICT
We've all known the conventional roles of theatre - developing creativity, reliving history, entertainment, and what not. But who knew, the impact that it can create is far more than that. Who knew it could create an entire movement, could influence administration to an extent beyond imagination. This man is the one behind it all. In this talk, he shares how Theatre has impacted the lives of his people.
Mr. Atish Indrekar has been an actor and director for the past 15 years at Budhan Theatre, a volunteer community based theatre group of Chhara Tribe, which was labelled as “Criminal Tribe” during colonial rule in India. He has performed various plays, all based on socio-political issues of the marginalised and oppressed communities across India. Having taught theatre in reputed institutes like IIMs and IITs, he believes in the power of theatre. Theatre is for all, and anybody can do it - is what he believes.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

Acting Like A Thief - Full Film
Purchase:
Acting Like a Thief is about a Chhara tribal theatre group in Ahmedabad, India. Starting with the arrest of playwright Dakxin Bajrange, the documentary reveals how the Budhan Theatre has transformed the lives of adults and children within the community. Chhara tribals were notified as natural criminals by the British in 1871 and imprisoned in a labor camp in Ahmedabad. After Indian independence, they were de-notified, but the stigma of being a born criminal follows them to this day.

The talk will revolve around the notions of ‘love' and their relationship with contestation, alongside inquiries such as: Is it possible to dance in forms of joy, protest, endurance, separation, and the everyday? Trailer for the Poor Theatres interview with Dakxin Bajrange Chhara, film maker and theatre practitioner, Budhan Theatre.
The mission of Budhan Theatre is to bring about social change by raising awareness of the historical plight of Denotified Tribes, notably the Chhara community, which has faced physical, social, and psychological struggle through its stigmatization as criminal. Budhan Theatre aims to do this by utilizing the talents of the Chharas as natural performers to conduct expressionist theater that emphasizes these unique issues. Highlighting the countless challenges faced by the Chhara community and spreading their creativity throughout India, Budhan Theatre hope to debunk stigmas about De-notified Tribes and ultimately attain constitutional recognition by the independent government of India.
