1. Arturas Bumšteinas. ēcheîa
The Contemporary Art Centre is proud to present Ēcheîa, a sound installation by the composer and sound artist Arturas Bumšteinas. It is the artist's first show at the institution in which a considerable portion of his artistic career started in 2002 and continued back and forth to this day. In a way, his practice has been situated in-between the fields of contemporary art and music ever since – one can often hear people talking about shows that Bumšteinas participates in as being works of a musician, and yet he employs pure sound, composing it in the manner of a conceptual artist.
For the show Arturas Bumšteinas has invited five sound enthusiasts and audiophiles – Gitis Bertulis, Antanas Dombrovskis, Ričardas Dubaka, Rytis Urbanskas and KALA Soundsystem – to design a speaker each. The speaker itself is not a complete work, but rather a part of a bigger, even if hypothetical, sound system: one is tweeting with nothing beneath it, the other buzzing like dancing bees, the third one is bassy like the cheeks of Balzac and the fourth – a middle-man, a clerk who knows what the others possess and how to tinker with that; I forgot about the fifth, but can feel it piercing through my bones.
The artist considers these speakers as birdhouses that are yet to be inhabited with sound. But there is a lot more that they could fit. Each engineer has provided the artist with pieces of sound, usually recorded or gathered by themselves, corresponding to the speakers. Using these samples, Arturas Bumšteinas composed a specific audio track, which can be played only through its corresponding speaker, turning it into a sound sculpture. These sculptures, collaborative pieces in their own right, become a chorus when combined, interacting with and complementing each other and turning the room into a vessel of amplified and resonating sound: echeia.
As a result, the sound-emitting speakers in the show turn not only into mouths, but also ears, allowing the listener to experience and participate in a carefully crafted acoustic experience, mediated by the work of the aforementioned artisans, the artist and the listener herself.
Arturas Bumšteinas is a composer/sound artist working in the fields of electro-acoustic and instrumental music, radio art, installations and experimental electronic music (under the pseudonym Refusenik). He is the founding member of Quartet Twentytwentyone, Works & Days, Zarasai and Wolumen ensembles. Since the year 2000 he has collaborated with many international musicians and artists. His interdisciplinary projects were presented in dozens of events around Europe. Festivals where his music and art projects were showcased include The Holland Festival, Sensoralia / Romaeuropa, Angelica, Vilnius Jazz, Kody, Skanumezs, Cut & Splice, amongst others. His music is published by labels such as Bolt, Cronica, Unsounds, Con-v, Sangoplasmo and others. In the year 2013 he was awarded the “Palma Ars Acustica” prize for radiophonic arts. Bumšteinas is selected as an artist-in-residence at DAAD Berliner Kuenstlerprogramm for the year 2017.
2. The Fluxus Cabinet | Jurgio Mačiūno Fluxus kabinetas
Alongside the galleries for temporary exhibitions, the upper floor of the CAC houses the institution’s only permanent display: part of Gilbert and Lila Silverman’s famous collection. The collection is dedicated to the Fluxus art movement, which proved crucial to the radical shift in the understanding of art in the Western world in the sixties. Fluxus manifestos, numerous artworks and instructions on how to make them circulated intensely for many years among artists in the United States, Europe and Japan, in a network coordinated largely by the founder of the movement, architect and designer George Maciunas (Jurgis Mačiūnas), a Lithuanian émigré. Having originated in New York, the movement was directed against the rigid, elitist and “overly self-important artistic system of art schools, museums and concerts of “serious” music, which refused any kind of levity, spontaneity and play.
Opened in 1997, the CAC’s Fluxus Cabinet showcases scores for the famous Fluxus events and other documents, photographs from Fluxus festivals in Nice, Wuppertal and New York, Fluxus newspapers, publications and conceptual sets of assorted objects, as well as a couple of manifestos written and designed by Maciunas. The exhibition includes works by some of the most important members of the Fluxus movement, such as Maciunas, George Brecht, Dick Higgins, Alison Knowles, Shigeko Kubota, Ben Vautier, Mieko Shiomi, Henry Flynt, La Monte Young, Yoko Ono, Ay-O and others. The selection of almost a hundred works of Fluxus was compiled by Jon Hendricks, the curator of the collection and one of the most influential originators of the history of this art movement.

The International Contemporary Art Fair ArtVilnius - Tarptautinė šiuolaikinio meno mugė ArtVilnius
ArtVilnius is the only contemporary art fair in Lithuania and the largest art fair in the Eastern Europe region. ArtVilnius, which had its start in 2009, was one of the most important events in the Vilnius – European Capital of Culture project. Over the last eight years, the art fair has expanded and become firmly established on the local and international art scene, as well as on the list of must-visit events for art lovers.
This is also confirmed by the statistics. Every year ArtVilnius has over 23,000 visitors, with about 65 art galleries from a dozen or so countries participating (Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belarus, the Netherlands, Russia, Italy, and France). The applications of galleries wishing to participate in the art fair are reviewed and selected by a jury made up of art critics and art market experts, thereby ensuring the professionalism of the galleries at the fair. During a decade of existing, in ArtVilnius participated such famous galleries as Suzzane-Tarasieve, Eric Mouchet (France), Ulf Larsson (Germany), Maksla XO (Latvia), Czułość, local_30, (Poland).
As the only art fair of its type in the region, it aims to be universally democratic. For this reason, the main objectives of ArtVilnius are not limited to stimulating the art market in the Eastern and Northern Europe region, as well as the presentation of a representative panorama of contemporary art galleries. The fair’s organisers have integrated Vilnius into the system of the most significant centres of contemporary art in Europe and have helped it become a bridge between East and West. The ArtVilnius team has established and continues to develop international contacts with contemporary art museums, institutions, curators, collectors, and journalists.
ArtVilnius takes place every year in one of the best exhibition spaces in Lithuania – the Exhibition and Congress Centre LITEXPO, a particularly suitable venue for art events. 12,000 sq. metre LITEXPO exposition space gives gallerists and visitors the complete event package. The architecture for the fair has been overseen for the last several years by a team of architects.
Alongside the supplementary contemporary art galleries programme, a separate project zone is also organised in which various art institutions and individual artists present special exhibitions. ArtVilnius is particularly proud of having in past years presented some of the best-known Polish art institutions (the Museum of Contemporary Art in Kraków MOCAK, the Łaźnia Centre for Contemporary Art in Gdańsk) and a programme of contemporary video art by one of the oldest video art festivals in Europe VIDEONALE (Germany). A regular Fair’s participant is the Estonian contemporary art platform NOAR that presents Nordic and Baltic Young Artist Award.
From 2014 the Lewben Art Foundation of the fair’s exclusive partner the Lewben Group has been presenting the collections of world-famous artists in the project zone curated by Francesca Ferrarini (Italy). On the list of these artists, one can find the names of Hans Op de Beeck, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Bertrand Lavier, amongst others. ArtVilnius is also proud to partner with Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, Contemporary Art Center (Vilnius) and Jonas Mekas Visual Art Center.
The fair is also exceptional in its annual large-scale sculptures and installations show Takas (The Path), in which artists from Lithuanian, Latvia, Ukraine, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Germany, Denmark and elsewhere have presented their work.
ArtVilnius aims to expand the circle of those interested in contemporary art in various sections of society, with a focus on young people in particular. That is why education plays a prominent part in the fair. Every year, visitors can avail themselves of a host of creative workshops and talks, as well as meetings with artists.
Selecting the best galleries, the best artist and the best artworks has become a traditional part of the ArtVilnius programme. A committee of art critics chooses the winners of the following 5 categories: Best Artist, Best Gallery (7 best galleries are selected), Best Foreign Gallery, Best Installation, and Best Young Artist. Additionally, visitors to the fair can vote for the artist and gallery they like the best. Already for several years, the law firm Cobalt, the fair’s Maecenas, has been awarding a money prize to the best young artist exhibiting at the fair.
ArtVilnius is organised by the Lithuanian Art Gallerists’ Association, of which organisation Diana Stomienė, as well as being the director of ArtVilnius, is also the president.

Šiuolaikinis šokis, šokiai, improvizacija.
Contemporary dance is a dance performance genre that developed during the mid twentieth century and has since grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world, with particularly strong popularity in the U.S. and Europe. Although originally informed by and borrowing from classical, modern, and jazz styles, it has since come to incorporate elements from many styles of dance.[1] Due to its technical similarities, it is often perceived to be closely related to modern dance, ballet and other classical concert dance styles.
In terms of the focus of its technique, contemporary dance tends to combine the strong and controlled legwork of ballet with modern dance's stress on the torso, and also employs contract-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation characteristic of modern dance.[2] Unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and direction are often used, as well. It sometimes also incorporates elements of non-western dance cultures such as elements from African dance including bent knees, or movements from the Japanese contemporary dance Butoh.

Vilnius Travel Guide - Lithuania Charming Memories
Vilnius Travel Guide - Lithuania Charming Memories
Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania. It lies in the valley of the confluence of Neris and Vilnia rivers. Along with Linz, Austria, Vilnius was the European Capital of Culture in 2009. The word Vilnius is a masculine form of the Vilnia river's name (which is feminine) and refers to the river surge.
Vilnius has always been a multi-national city populated with Lithuanians, Poles, Germans and Slavs from the immemorial time, later on with Jews as well. Although the original city location was lost due to erosion, the present day Old Town reappeared in the Middle Ages.
Although the Old Town is one of the largest in Europe, it can easily be explored on foot. Susisiekimo paslaugos operates buses and trolleybuses in Vilnius. A single ticket for either bus or trolleybus use costs €1(, purchased from the driver (cash only) or ~€0.70/30min if a Vilniečio kortelė (Vilnius Citizen Card) is purchased from a kiosk, PayPost outlet, Post office or Maxima supermarket for €1.50. When changing buses, you need a new paper ticket.
There are several well known foreign car rental companies as well as several domestic companies in Vilnius. City-Bee operates a car sharing network where you can rent a car by the hour. There is no contract nor monthly fee, you pay only for the service when you use the car, no parking expenses when you are not using it. There are 13 pick-up points throughout the city, mostly in the centre and some relevant points in northern districts.
Vilnius Old Town is a city area which began to develop extensively around the Middle Ages and it eventually became surrounded by a defensive wall after some time. The wall was distinguished by its strong surroundings and its shape for a long period of time, but this area is now called Old Town and has a separate status in the Vilnius administrative division. While the urban structure reflects the earliest development from c. 14th century, the architecture of the buildings is mostly from Baroque and Classicism periods with some examples of Renaissance and Gothic, to a lesser extent. One should keep in mind that medieval Vilnius was once a wooden city. The huge fires ravaged Vilnius several times since 1513 to 1749. Therefore, many buildings of the 19th and 20th centuries (still considered new) have Gothic and Renaissance cellars, many of which now are occupied with restaurants, bars or shops. One particular nice area is a block of artisan guilds that is notorious because of its evil fate: 6 Sep 1941 the two Jewish ghetto, commonly known as Vilnius Ghetto, were established. The ghetto operated until 24 Sept 1943. In 1994, the Old Town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
In both Old Town and the Centre there are plenty of cafés. You simply can walk and choose the one you like or ignore if not in mood, not much effort is needed. There are chains of coffee shops and you can easily find them without a guidance.
There are 65 churches in Vilnius. Like most medieval towns, Vilnius was developed around its Town Hall. Pilies Street, the main artery, links the Royal Palace with Town Hall. Other streets meander through the palaces of feudal lords and landlords, churches, shops and craftsmen's workrooms. Narrow, curved streets and intimate courtyards developed in the radial layout of medieval Vilnius.

Inspired by a cloud of recent discourses around the revival of the linguistic turn, or its modification into the narrative turn, as suggested by Dieter Roelstraete, this year's Three Uses of the Knife (re)turns its focus on language and oral communication.
On November 11, 2011, at Vilnius Academy of Art (Gothic hall) Luca Cerizza (IT) presented a lecture The art of storytelling, the story(telling) of art.
Luca Cerizza is a curator and writer, currently based in Berlin. Among his latest curatorial projects: Alighiero e Boetti Day, a 12-hours event dedicated to the seminal Italian artist (co-curated with Massimiliano Gioni and Francesco Manacorda; Turin, May 28th, 2011) and a solo show by Marcello Maloberti (co-curated with Pierre Bal-Blanc, CAC Bretigny and Nuit Blanche, Paris; July-October 2011).

Olof Olsson is an artist based in Copenhagen. In his youth Olof Olsson dabbled in journalism, documentary photography, and as a radio disc jockey. At university Olof studied languages, philosophy and translation theory. In 1992 Olof did his first exhibition, a fictive account of an American photographer, Joseph Slightly, and his adventures and sufferings during the first half of the 20th century. Since 2007 Olof is working with spoken performances.
On November 18, 2011, at the Auditorium of the National Gallery of Art Olof Olsson talked about:
Names. It's funny how easily we seem to accept names. But what sense does it make for a computer to carry the name of a fruit?
Reality. Sometimes we want it, sometimes we don't. And a lot of the time we prefer something in-between, like a documentary film.
Sanitary porcelain. Why it's probably impossible to get ridiculously rich selling sanitary porcelain.

Vilnius sights & places to see are presented on a Google map:
Walk in Vilnius Old Town, one of the largest surviving medieval Old Towns in Northern Europe. Covering an area of 360 ha, you can see a very big diversity of architectural styles, it's a mix since more than one century. You also are going to see some unmissable places.
1. Vilnius Town Hall is located in the very centre of the city, in the Town Hall Square. The history of it began in the XVth century. It is mentioned for the first time in 1432.
When Vilnius city got it's city rights in 1387 it had to build an administrative office. According to some XVIth century sources, at first Vilnius Town Hall was that of gothic style and had a tower. However, it suffered from fires and invaders so was rebuilt several times. In 1799 Laurynas Gucevičius designed it in neoclassical style and it remained unchanged since then.
2. Vilnius Cathedral: a full name of which is Vilnius Cathedral Basilica of St. Stanislav and St. Vladislav, is located below Gediminas Castle in the centre of Vilnius city and it is the most spectaculous masterpeace of classicism style in the capital of Lithuania. Moreover, it is also a historical heritage.
3. Gedimino Tower & The Hill of three Crosses: Whatever where you are in the city you can't miss them, they're one of the most stunning view of the old city center. Gedimino tower it's the only survival part of the Gedimino Castle. From this tower you can admire the panoramic view. Nowadays, there is a museum inside the tower. It's a symbol reminding the torture of seven Franciscan monks.
3. Church of St. Johns / Vilnius University, founded in 1579 is composed of 13 courtyards with 13 buildings, each consisting of several blocks, as well as the Church of St. Johns. In 1985 Vilnius University was awarded European Gold Medal for the protection of monuments. You can see the architectural styles : Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Classicism. This University is one of the oldest and most famous establishments of higher education in Eastern and Central Europe. //
4. St John's Church: Integrated into composition of Vilnius University, it's one of the most impressive baroque churches in Vilnius. It serves as a pray house, a Museum of Science and a place for solemnities and concerts. It is possible to visit the main hall of the church, but also get down to it`s basement, as well as climb into its` loft.
5. St Anne's Church: It will definitely leave an impression for anyone. It is said that Napoleon Bonaparte, while visiting Vilnius during the Franco-Russian War in 1812, was so impressed by this church that he loudly expressed his emotions by saying that if he could, he would take St. Anne's Church with him to Paris in his own palm. At first, this church was built with wood in 1394, later, wood was replaced by bricks. Having survived to the present day without changing for over 500 years, St Anne's Church is now a symbol of Vilnius.
6. Užupis district. The artistic and wacky district of Vilnius city. You can't miss the mermaid who is going to welcome you when you cross the bridge. After trying to count the locks covering this one, you are going to meet the Official symbol of the Independence of Uzipisians: The Angel (is held here since 1992). Walk around and have a stop front of the Uzupis Constitution (Paupio street).
7. The Television Tower: After this long walking day, you can enjoy having a dinner to the 55th floor of the Television Tower. There is the Milky Way restaurant which turns slowly to permit you to enjoy the panoramic view during the sunset for example. This tower is also use to do some [.....] 21litas the entrance free. You can go there in taxi or in bus [10, Sausio 13-osios, Vilnius]. It's open daily from 10 a.m until 10 p.m
8. Europos Parkas: The European park 30 km outside of Vilnius. It's a huge open-air contemporary museum, covering 55 hectares of forests. You can see there more than 100 works of art carried by international artists. The most popular is the monument representing the center of Europe, built by Mr. Gintaras Karosas. 25 Ltl the entrance fee.
9. Pūčkoriai Path & Belmontas: You will meet is a beautifully big, 65 metres high and 260 metres wide steep hill, covered with forests and Vilnia river in the bottom. Beautiful path for tourists, wishing to discover still green hills around Vilnius, which Vilnius city is famous of..
