New Orleans, Louisiana, United States, North America
New Orleans is a major United States port and the largest city and metropolitan area in the state of Louisiana. The population of the city was 343,829 as of the 2010 U.S. Census. The New Orleans metropolitan area (New Orleans--Metairie--Kenner Metropolitan Statistical Area) had a population of 1,167,764 in 2010 and was the 46th largest in the United States. The New Orleans--Metairie--Bogalusa Combined Statistical Area, a larger trading area, had a 2010 population of 1,214,932. The city is named after the Duke of Orleans, who reigned as Regent for Louis XV from 1715 to 1723, and is well known for its distinct French Creole architecture, as well as its cross-cultural and multilingual heritage. New Orleans is also famous for its cuisine, music (particularly as the birthplace of jazz), and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras. The city is often referred to as the most unique in America. New Orleans is located in southeastern Louisiana, straddling the Mississippi River. The city and Orleans Parish (French: paroisse d'Orléans) are coterminous. The city and parish are bounded by the parishes of St. Tammany to the north, St. Bernard to the east, Plaquemines to the south and Jefferson to the south and west. Lake Pontchartrain, part of which is included in the city limits, lies to the north and Lake Borgne lies to the east. New Orleans has many major attractions, from the world-renowned French Quarter and Bourbon Street's notorious nightlife to St. Charles Avenue (home of Tulane and Loyola Universities, the historic Pontchartrain Hotel, and many 19th-century mansions), to Magazine Street, with its many boutique stores and antique shops. According to current travel guides, New Orleans is one of the top ten most visited cities in the United States; 10.1 million visitors came to New Orleans in 2004, and the city was on pace to break that level of visitation in 2005. Prior to Katrina, there were 265 hotels with 38,338 rooms in the Greater New Orleans Area. In May 2007, there were over 140 hotels and motels in operation with over 31,000 rooms. A 2009 Travel + Leisure poll of America's Favorite Cities ranked New Orleans first in ten categories, the most first-place rankings of the 30 cities included. According to the poll, New Orleans is the best U.S. city as a spring break destination and for wild weekends, stylish boutique hotels, cocktail hours, singles/bar scenes, live music/concerts and bands, antique and vintage shops, cafés/coffee bars, neighborhood restaurants, and people watching. The city also ranked second for gay friendliness (behind San Francisco, California), friendliness (behind Charleston, South Carolina), bed and bath hotels and inns, and ethnic food. However the city was voted last in terms of active residents and near the bottom in cleanliness, safety, and as a family destination. The French Quarter (known locally as the Quarter or Vieux Carré), which dates from the French and Spanish eras and is bounded by the Mississippi River, Rampart Street, Canal Street, and Esplanade Avenue, contains many popular hotels, bars, and nightclubs. Notable tourist attractions in the Quarter include Bourbon Street, Jackson Square, St. Louis Cathedral, the French Market (including Café du Monde, famous for café au lait and beignets) and Preservation Hall. To tour the port, one can ride the Natchez, an authentic steamboat with a calliope, which cruises the Mississippi the length of the city twice daily. Unlike most other places in The United States, and the world, New Orleans has become widely known for its element of elegant decay. The city's many beautiful cemeteries and their distinct above-ground tombs are often attractions in themselves, the oldest and most famous of which, Saint Louis Cemetery, greatly resembles Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. Also located in the French Quarter is the old New Orleans Mint, a former branch of the United States Mint, which now operates as a museum, and The Historic New Orleans Collection, a museum and research center housing art and artifacts relating to the history of New Orleans and the Gulf South. The National World War II Museum, opened in the Warehouse District in 2000 as the National D-Day Museum, is dedicated to providing information and materials related to the Invasion of Normandy. Nearby, Confederate Memorial Hall, the oldest continually operating museum in Louisiana (although under renovation since Katrina), contains the second-largest collection of Confederate memorabilia in the world. Art museums in the city include the Contemporary Arts Center, the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) in City Park, and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art.

NOLA NOW I - Art For Art's Sake opening 2011; video by alan Gerson
Previously On Piety @ Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans April 17, 2009 - July 12, 2009
Previously on Piety derives its name from 617 Piety Street, the Bywater address where the original exhibition took place. A raw warehouse space temporarily converted into a makeshift exhibition site, 617 Piety's impressive length and ceiling height made it possible for the artists involved to develop highly ambitious works that, while not site-specific, would have been extremely difficult to realize in a more conventional gallery setting.
Featuring New Orleans artists Gerard Caliste, Rondell Crier, Jan Gilbert, Jana Napoli, and Rontherin Ratliff, each will be represented by a single large-scale installation, originally shown together as a Satellite Exhibition for Prospect.1. (PreviouslyOnPiety.com)

::: The 2019 NO DEAD ARTISTS Jury :::
ROBYN DUNN SCHWARZ
Before joining Matthew Clayton Brown in 2006, Robyn was an Assistant Vice President in Impressionist and Modern Art at Sotheby’s for nine years. Prior to Sotheby’s, she worked with George Stern Fine Arts, Los Angeles, a leading art dealer specializing in California paintings, and Nedra Matteucci’s Fenn Galleries, Santa Fe. Robyn has been a member of the Appraisers Association of America since 2007 and is certified in the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP). She is also a board member and past president of the Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans, trustee of the Metairie Park Country Day School and a member of Art Table and the Director’s Council of the New Orleans Museum of Art.
CARMON COLANGELO
Carmon Colangelo is the inaugural dean of the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, bringing together Washington University’s historic Colleges of Art and Architecture and the distinguished Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum into a vibrant creative community. He earned a BFA in printmaking and painting from the University of Windsor in Ontario and an MFA in printmaking from Louisiana State University. Colangelo has been featured in more than 40 solo and 150 group exhibitions and his work has been collected by such museums as the National Museum of American Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Saint Louis Art Museum.
NICK KORNILOFF
As Executive Vice President, Partner and Show Director of Art Miami LLC, Korniloff oversees the management and creative direction for Art Miami, CONTEXT, Aqua Art Miami, Art New York, Palm Beach Modern & Contemporary, Art Wynwood, Art Southampton and Art Silicon Valley/San Francisco. He is also one of the founders of LUXE Show Ventures. In 2008, Korniloff took the helm at Art Miami LLC and swiftly revitalized Art Miami, now in its 28th year. By expanding the high-quality and diverse group of international exhibitors, galleries, and institutions, Korniloff reorganized the fair to attract an impressive audience of collectors, dealers, curators and artists. This expansion and move to the Wynwood Arts District successfully repositioned the show as the city’s most important and anchor fair during Art Week, which takes place in early December when thousands descend upon Miami for a flurry of cultural events and fairs. Art Miami is now the number one attended fair in America and second globally it now attracts around 85,000 attendees annually.
Of the approximate 3,000 artworks submitted to this jury by over 600 artists worldwide, only sixteen artists were selected to have their work exhibited at JONATHAN FERRARA GALLERY.

Prospect.1 New Orleans Biennial 2008
Prospect.1 is New Orlean's first biennial and the largest-ever international contemporary art show in the United States. Similar in style and scope to Venice, the exhibit consists of site-specific art installations, as well as several galleries in museums and elsewhere in the city devoted to it. As the front page of the event's website proclaims, it's designed to bring media attention and tourist dollars to New Orleans, so book your tickets now to get down there before it closes 18 January 2009.
Why so bold-faced? Think of it as a giant humanitarian effort to get people to visit a fascinating location—it's win-win for New Orleans and for visitors, especially the types who aren't interested in Bourbon street and otherwise would have little reason to explore the beautifully ramshackle neighborhoods in various states of decay and rebuilding.
As Peter Schjeldahl writes in the New Yorker, referring to the successful candor of the organizer's intentions, featuring few big names and nary a masterpiece, it is my favorite biennial since the nineteen-eighties.

new orleans architects | call us (504) 826-8004!
New Orleans Architects are based in a city steeped in rich history. However, in the recent past, the city has faced a series of adversities due to hurricane Katrina.
The city's coastline faced mass destruction resulting in the loss of countless lives and billions of dollars. This huge destruction was largely because of the loss of the sediment from Mississippi delta. There was no real or clear regulation throughout the gulf coast in regards to the oil and gas industry that share a coastline with New Orleans.
After Katrina was over, almost everything changed in terms of how structural buildings were put up and the way New Orleans architects would forever do their job.
After the devastating effects of hurricane Katrina, the main agenda was not restoring the coast or the halt coastal erosion, but rather the focus became on balancing the demands of settlements against the kind of investment that most people of New Orleans were willing to make. Whatever plans architects in New Orleans had, they had to be strategic and practical.
Since New Orleans is not like any other city, there are certain local specifics that most New Orleans architects have. These specific aspects are due to the fact that after Katrina, most of the settlements in New Orleans had to offer future protection that would allow home and business owners to have faith that their buildings could survive another major natural calamity.
The following are some of the aspects that define or differentiate local New Orleans architects.
-Architects in New Orleans have developed strategies that fit most settlements in New Orleans. The architectural design of most buildings in New Orleans has to be resilient in order to survive its complex geographical landscape. New Orleans architects have to account for instances that may require retreat, defense or flood resistance. These aspects are not only important because of the natural effects that hurricane Katrina caused, but also the negative man-made situations that occurred as a result of it.
-The architects in New Orleans have a wide range of specific community and place solutions. This is because the city itself requires an integrated urban development plan that takes into account the natural processes and dynamic changes that regularly occur in the city.
-Architectural information, strategies and plans arrived by New Orleans architects are influenced by context from various specialists working in different significant fields such as, engineering, science and design. Such individuals help to determine things such as water diversions that help to increase the deposition of any sediment for land-building.
-Architects in New Orleans are specially placed to prepare for natural calamities and mitigating their impacts. They look at the natural systems that have been in place for years providing significant protection for the city and try to find ways of restoring and strengthening these systems.
-New Orleans architects have the necessary expertise and experience to deal with the hurdles and red tape that come with building in New Orleans. Since Katrina, the government and building associations came up with tighter rules that would ensure that any kind of building project, private or public, meets the required standards.
The following are some of the aspects that define the architects of this city. It is not just any ordinary building area, especially after the devastating effects of hurricane Katrina.

Places to see in ( New Orleans - USA ) New Orleans City Park
City Park, a 1,300-acre (5.3 km2) public park in New Orleans, Louisiana, is the 87th largest and 20th-most-visited urban public park in the United States. City Park is approximately 50% larger than Central Park in New York City, the municipal park recognized by Americans nationwide as the archetypal urban greenspace. Although it is an urban park whose land is owned by the City of New Orleans, it is administered by the City Park Improvement Association, an arm of state government, not by the New Orleans Parks and Parkways Department. City Park is very unusual in that it is a largely self-supporting public park, with most of its annual budget derived from self-generated revenue through user fees and donations.
In the wake of the enormous damage inflicted upon the park due to Hurricane Katrina, the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism began to partially subsidize the park's operations. City Park holds the world's largest collection of mature live oak trees, some older than 600 years in age. The park was founded in 1854, making it the 48th oldest park in the country, and established as the City Park in 1891.
The park was originally a location used for dueling. In the 1800s, men would defend their pride and honor by dueling each other under the oaks at what is now City Park but then was a normally quiet spot secluded from the rest of the city. Originally, there were two dueling oaks, but one was lost in a hurricane in 1949. City Park was established in the mid-19th century on land fronting Metairie Road (now City Park Avenue), along the remains of Bayou Metairie, a former distributary of the Mississippi River.
