WENECJA miasto mostów, sztuki i gondoli

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

Vittore Carpaccio (c. 1465 - 1526) was an Italian painter of the Venetian school, who studied under Gentile Bellini. He is best known for a cycle of nine paintings, The Legend of Saint Ursula. His style was somewhat conservative, showing little influence from the Humanist trends that transformed Italian Renaissance painting during his lifetime. He was influenced by the style of Antonello da Messina and Early Netherlandish art. For this reason, and also because so much of his best work remains in Venice, his art has been rather neglected by comparison with other Venetian contemporaries, such as Giovanni Bellini or Giorgione.
Carpaccio's earliest known solo works are a Salvator Mundi in the Collezione Contini Bonacossi and a Pietà now in the Palazzo Pitti. These works clearly show the influence of Antonello da Messina and Giovanni Bellini – especially in the use of light and colors – as well as the influence of the schools of Ferrara and Forlì.

Celebrated paintings like the Venus of Urbino by Titian, Federico Barocci’s Virgin of the People and the preparatory sketch for The Fall of the Angels by Andrea Commodi are on display alongside more than 30 others that have not been shown to the public for decades. The renovated rooms also have newly coloured walls, each hue chosen to represent the works that occupy the rooms.

The rooms boast one of the most comprehensive collections of the Uffizi’s Venetian paintings. One of the rooms houses the museum’s collection of altarpieces from the Counter-Reformation. Some of the smaller rooms contain religious works, the others have paintings of mythological and allegorical subjects.
The renovations were made possible thanks to Friends of the Uffizi Galleries.
