If you want a peek in history, there are innumerable places in India that deserve a visit. Although most of them are leftovers of royal heritage and British era, they give a glimpse of life that existed some 500 years or more years ago. And then, there are monuments that stand out for its historical, religious and architectural significance.
In this context, the Cooch Behar Palace certainly deserves a mention. In fact, it is one of the most important places to visit in West Bengal. It boasts of magnificent architecture that is very much similar to that of Buckingham Palace in London in 1887 AD. The graceful exteriors and interiors exhibiting antique pieces such as chandeliers, paintings and photographs are a reflection of ancient era.
This brick-built palace is protected and fortified by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). This royal palace, which is now a part of West Bengal, is like a pun on an otherwise princely and significant state in British India, i.e., Cooch Behar. However, the most important reason to visit this palace is to witness the limits and intentions of Indian royals, who would go to lengths to ape Europeans during the British Raj.
Cooch Behar Palace—where time stands still
The majestic palace with its ribbed dome and Corinthian pillars still stands tall, beaming with history and beauty, yet it is not a tourist favourite.
A bit about its history—this palace is not only beautiful, but also housed a more exquisite beauty. Maharani Gayatri Devi was born here in 1919, leaving for the princely state of Jaipur after getting married. It is believed that she was the most beautiful woman of the world during her time. She also entered politics as a member of the Swarajya Party.
This palce in Cooch Behar was designed originally by Koch King Maharaja Nripendra Narayan. This grand building is double storied in structure and acquires around 51309 sq.ft. As you walk inside this brilliant masterpiece, you will get to see numerous halls and rooms. The curved verandas in the ground floor creates a setting of a little bit of mystery. You will be able to reach the Durbar Hall via the extended veranda, which has a metal dome and is covered with a cylindrical louver that primarily depicts the Italian Renaissance style of construction.
A section of the palace has now been converted into a museum. As you step into the museum, you get a sight of objects that are reflective of noble times. Oil paintings are there in abundance hanging in the museum, chandeliers, antique figurines further add the required dash. A tribal gallery is also present there, showcasing items that are particularly inspired from the lives of local people.
Th beautiful gardens surrounding the palace are another charm here. All in all, a visit to Cooch Behar Palace should be there on everyone’s travel bucket list for India.

Cooch Behar Palace, also called the Victor Jubilee Palace, is a landmark in Cooch Behar city, West Bengal. It was modelled after the Buckingham Palace in London in 1887, during the reign of Maharaja Nripendra Narayan.
The Cooch Behar Palace, noted for its elegance and grandeur, is a property of The Mantri's. It is a brick-built double-storey structure in the classical Western style covering an area of 51,309 square feet (4,766.8 m2). The whole structure is 395 feet (120 m) long and 296 feet (90 m) wide and is on rests 4 feet 9 inches (1.45 m) above the ground. The Palace is fronted on the ground and first floors by a series of arcaded verandahs with their piers arranged alternately in single and double rows. At the southern and northern ends, the Palace projects slightly and in the centre is a projected porch providing an entrance to the Durbar Hall. The Hall has an elegantly shaped metal dome which is topped by a cylindrical louvre type ventilator. This is 124 feet (38 m) high from the ground and is in the style of the Renaissance architecture. The intros of the dome is carved in stepped patterns and Corinthian columns support the base of the cupola. This adds variegated colours and designs to the entire surface. There are various halls in the palace and rooms that include the Dressing Room, Bed Room, Drawing Room, Dining Hall, Billiard hall, Library, Toshakhana, Ladies Gallery and Vestibules. The articles and precious objects that these rooms and halls used to contain are now lost.

The Cooch Behar Palace is situated in West Bengal. Built in bricks in the classical Western style, this double-storeyed structure covers an area of 51,309 sq ft. The Palace is fronted by a series of arcaded verandahs in the ground and first floors with their piers arranged in an alternate use of single and double rows. It is slightly projected at the south and northern ends and in the centre there is a projected porch to provide an entrance to the Durbar Hall. The elegantly shaped metal dome of the Durbar Hall is topped by a cylindrical louver type ventilator recalling the style of the Italian Renaissance. It contains more than 50 massive halls. It was built in 1887 by the Koch King, Maharaja Nripendra Narayan. The rooms deserve special attention for their beautiful royal paintings that adorn the ceiling as well as the interior wall.
