Pine Mountain Cooper's Furnace Day Hike Part 1
Part 1: It was a beautiful Spring day to hike the Pine Mountain Cooper's Furnace Trail in Cartersville, Georgia. I parked at the Spur 20 Pine Mountain Trailhead and took the Connector Trail to the Cooper's Furnace Day Use Area. The park can be reached by vehicle by taking Highway 41 South from Highway 113 in Cartersville. Travel approximately one mile and take a left onto River Road. River Road will take you to the park. The information I shared about Cooper's Furnace can be found at the following links:
Part 2: From the Cooper's Furnace Day Use Area I hiked up to the overlook for the Allatoona Lake Dam. This is a dam of the Etowah River constructed and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers. From the overlook I hiked along the Laurel Ridge Trail (the Mountain Laurel was beginning to bloom) back to the Pine Mountain Connector Trail for my return to the trailhead.

PINE MOUNTAIN - Special Edition Hiking With BOZO - Best Places To Hike In North Georgia
Pine Mountain in Cartersville, Georgia is one of the best places to hike in North Georgia. This is a slightly moderate trail 4.5 mile hike and provides some excellent views from the David Archer Overlook at the top.
In this video, I had an awesome opportunity to hike with my 69 year old Dad BOZO. Any chance you get, I would recommend spending time with your family and hiking is one of the best activities you can share together. This trail is moderate, but most can hike this trail and I definitely recommend it!
Parking is free and this trail is dog friendly. Remember to leave no trace and always pack out what you pack in. Including those dog poop baggies. Please don't leave them on the trail even if you plan to pick them back up later.

Henry Clay Furnace: An Industrial Ghost Town
This is a video that shows what remains of an industrial ghost town and the Henry Clay Furnace in Chickies Rock County Park during a hike on 3/7/16.
The Henry Clay furnace, one of the first of the anthracite furnaces along the Susquehanna between Columbia and Marietta, was built in 1845 by Peter Haldeman, a prominent Columbia merchant. Haldeman purchased the land, consisting of nine acres with a “two story tavern house and a stable and other improvements” (Sheriffs Deed Book, 1841), at a sheriff’s sale of the estate of John Kelley. The tavern house, which dated to 1819 according to the extant tavern petitions, was apparently kept and utilized by Haldeman as the furnace manager’s house. The furnace changed hands several times after 1855, producing only sporadically until 1865 when, after a long period of idleness it was blown in again under the proprietorship of the firm Denney and Hess. Documentary evidence indicates that the former tavern house was then the residence for the furnace’s manager, John Q. Denney. In 1875 Clement Brooke Grubb purchased and renamed it St. Charles Furnace No. 2 (Grubb had built St. Charles Furnace No. 1, one and a quarter miles south along the river in 1854). In 1879 and 1880 he remodeled the furnace. Although the furnace was remodeled again in 1887, its production declined and it was abandoned in 1889.
The location of the furnace made early use of the canal for import of anthracite coal from northeastern Pennsylvania, and the road up Jones Hollow gave access to the local Chestnut Hill iron ore mines some six miles distant. Jones Creek furnished water for steam power, and local limestone quarries provided that material for flux. By the 1850’s the Pennsylvania Railroad’s Harrisburg, Portsmouth, Mount Joy and Lancaster line paralleling the canal linked the furnace to a larger transportation network.
The six-tenement house adjacent to the furnace was probably built by Haldeman around 1847. After the furnace shut down, the tenement was variously occupied in the early 20th century by railroad workers, employees at the stone crusher just north of the furnace, and other tenants until the early 1920’s when a fire made the structure uninhabitable.

Hike On Hump Day: Pine Mountain West Loop near Atlanta Georgia
For this week's #HikeOnHumpDay, we're featuring a Fantastic Fall Hike near Atlanta Georgia. The 2 mile Pine Mountain West Loop + Summit Overlook is a great mountain hike.
Pine Log Creek Trail and a CCC Rock Quarry
I went on a day hike in the Pine Log Creek Trail System located in Bartow County, Georgia near the town of Rydal. The Pine Log Creek Trail is approximately 4.25 miles in length and is part of 275 acres protected as Bartow County greenspace. There are two overlooks where one can view Pine Log Mountain, one of the highest elevations in Bartow County's Appalachian foothills. The elevation at the summit is 2331' and is actually located in Cherokee County, Georgia. This area is also the site of the Pine Log Cherokee Indian Village. The Treaty of Hopewell was signed here in 1785. In the late 1570's De Soto even visited the village.
The trail system includes two loops east and west. The western loop features an elevation gain of approximately 420' in about 0.75 miles. The eastern loop takes one by an early Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) quarry pond for some peaceful and picturesque views. Thank you for watching and Keep Hiking!

Pine Mountain Georgia Hiking West Scenic Trail Cartersville,
There’s nothing better than a drive to the North Georgia mountains for a dose of fresh air and a hike to a scenic mountain summit. Even better, though, when a local hike offers beautiful summit views and a great mountain climb – but without the long drive. The Pine Mountain Trail winds and climbs to sweeping views of Lake Allatoona, Stone Mountain and Kennesaw Mountain. The trail, located just east of Cartersville, hikes a stream-filled coniferous forest, and winds along massive granite outcrops. And under 40 miles from midtown Atlanta, this figure-eight loop offers a fantastic, view-packed hike without a long drive to the trailhead.

Red Top Mountain State Park - Homestead Trail
Music: I Will Wait by Human Universe - A Tribute to Mumford and Sons
I went on a day hike at Red Top Mountain State Park on the Homestead Trail. The park is approximately 2.5 square miles and is located on a peninsula of Lake Allatoona in Bartow County near Cartersville, Georgia. The trailhead is located at the visitor center on Red Top Mountain Road. The name of the park comes from the characteristic red soil of the rich iron ore once mined here. The Homestead Trail is 5.5 miles long and is very peaceful as it winds through a hardwood forest on the banks of Lake Allatoona. Enjoy the trail. Keep Hiking!
Phantom 2 at Pine Mountain
Brannon and Nunzio fly the minion on top of Pine Mountain in Cartersville, GA. Views of Cartersville, Lake Allatoona, and surrounding hills. NP!
Vineyard Mountain Yellow Trail of North Georgia
I went on a day hike on Vineyard Mountain in Cartersville, Georgia. The trailhead is located at Riverside Park just below Lake Allatoona Dam. The trail offers a 2.8 mile hike to the other side of the mountain at the Bethany Bridge trailhead near the entrance to Red Top Mountain State Park.
On this 5.6 mile out and back I catch some views of Lake Allatoona Dam and Lake Allatoona itself. It is a very peaceful hike along the mountain and lake where late October still offers some fall colors. The Eagle Scouts of Bartow County do a great job maintaining the trail. This trail provides beautiful scenery, excellent exercise, and an opportunity to enjoy a peaceful hike in God's creation. It had been almost twenty years since I last hiked this trail and my memories did not fail me. Definitely worth the hike. Thanks for watching and Keep Hiking!
