Copper Mountain U.S. Ski Team First Tracks (Day One)
The U.S. Ski Team is fast. In fact, they're so fast, they sound less like skiers and more like a Boeing 747. Halley O'Brien brings us to the U.S. Ski Team Speed Center as the team jets by. Bah dum tss.
Explore Colorado US Ski Team at Copper Mountain
Speedsters on skis have taken over part of Copper Mountain as the U.S. Ski Team trains at the U.S. Ski Team Speed Center. It is the only full-length downhill training center for elite skiers in the world open this early in the ski season. The one-of-a-kind center is designed to give World Cup contenders and Olympic hopefuls the extra edge over the competition. Other countries vie for time at the Speed Center after the U.S. Team trains exclusively at it for a few weeks.
Tomorrow the U.S Alpine Ski Team will officially be named at 4pm at Copper Mountain. You can check out the athletes coming down the steepest section of the Speed Center starting at noon tomorrow at the base of the Super Bee Chairlift. It is a full day of activities planned for Friday at Copper Mountain, including a chance to get autographs from skiers like Ted Ligety, Bode Miller, and Colorado’s own Lindsey Vonn and Mikaela Shiffrin.
The re-grand opening of Woodward at Copper to celebrate the half-million dollar renovations will be over Thanksgiving weekend and does include some free public sessions. The U.S. Freeskiing and Snowboarding Teams will be there along with some pro BMX riders and skateboarders. The one hour 45 minute Intro Session at Woodward at Copper is $49 a person and is mandatory. It is a fun session to do with friends or family and introduces you to everything the facility has to offer from the foam pits to trampolines to Skatelite.
Copper Mountain will host the top freeskiers and snowboarders in the USSA Grand Prix December 16-22.
You can catch the alpine skiers racing at Copper Mountain in the USSA NorAm Race to the Cup November 11-15 and in the NorAm Speed Series December 7-15.
The ski runs that make up the U.S Ski Team Speed Center will open to the public after the races in mid-December.
US Ski Team Opens New Speed Center At Copper Mountain, Colorado
COPPER MOUNTAIN, Colo. (CBS4) -- Copper Mountain is the new place for the U.S. Ski Team to train. The $5 million facility opened on Tuesday.
Right now most resorts only have about five runs open. But the new ski team course is one of the few places in the world where skiers can train on a full-length course at this time of year.
For more than a decade the ski team has been looking for something like the new course. Late this summer an agreement was reached with Copper Mountain. In just about 2 months a world-class ski course was made.
I just can't imagine what it would have been like to have a facility like this to get myself ready for my seasons, Olympic gold medalist Picabo Street said.
It took $4.3 million just to get the run ready.
A big chunk of that is in a new top-to-bottom automated snow making system, Copper Mountain resident Gary Rodgers said.
The other money was spent on brand new high-tech safety netting.
The thing that's really cool about this is that we can train and learn to ski downhill, which is a very dangerous sport, in a controlled, safe environment, a ski team official said.
It's going to just get better and better. So long term I think it's going to just catapult us into the early season races, a ski team member said. At a time when everyone else is scrambling for training, we'll have world-class training.
There's a 20-year commitment from the ski team to train at Copper Mountain. Next year they're hoping to start training right after Halloween.
The course is closed to the public until Dec. 10.
