Shooting Coral Ridge Mall, police not allowing anyone in, cars of mall patrons seen leaving.
A possible suspect was found in Scott County after Coral Ridge Mall was shut down following gunshots fired inside the building.
The shooting was reported at about 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 12, 2015, at the mall in Coralville, Iowa. Witnesses reported the gunfire happened in or near the food court area.
Initial reports indicated a man allegedly opened fire inside the building before he fled in a blue passenger car, last seen eastbound from the mall. The suspect car was described as a blue passenger car, possibly a Corolla or an Acura, with Texas plates.
Unconfirmed reports indicated three to four shots had been fired and that one person was hit.
Mall patrons were reportedly trapped inside stores as the building was secured. Others were immediately evacuated.
Just before 8:30 p.m. an officer in an Iowa State Patrol car had reportedly spotted a vehicle, matching the description of the suspect car, on eastbound Interstate 80 at about mile marker 288.
Police reportedly stopped that vehicle on I-80 nearly an hour after the shooting, and took the male driver into custody. The driver was reportedly the only person inside the car.
Coralville Neighborhood Reeling Following Shooting
CORALVILLE, IA (CBS2/FOX28) -- A teen is recovering tonight after police say another teen shot him. The 15-year-old is expected to be OK, but investigators are still trying to figure out why the shooting happened in the first place. 17-year-old Arthur Kirksey is charged with attempted murder, robbery, and possession of a firearm as a felon. Deonta Moore, Patrick Warren and Ali Abdelkarim all face robbery charges. Its a quiet neighborhood, says neighbor Lonnie Sproles. Sproles hasn't lived in this neighborhood for long...but long enough to know there isn't usually a lot going on. There's never no...never nothin'. It's quiet. basically boring, he says. But then Monday night red and blue lights lit up their streets and homes. I actually came out to put a can of cat food outside for the cat and saw a police car right in front of my house, says another neighbor, Kathleen Peters. Word spread that a boy was shot in a home. The suspects range in age from 17 to 20. It's very sad that these crimes are happening all over the place, but they are young people, you know? it's very sad, says Peters. I do believe they knew each other and that was one of the ways we were able to find them so quickly, says Coralville Police Chief Barry Bedford. The teenagers injuries are not life threatening, but this act follows another act of gun violence not even two weeks ago, where a 20-year old woman was shot and killed at Coral Ridge Mall. As we've seen across the nation, pretty much anything can happen anywhere and that's a, obviously a disturbing thing for all of us, says Bedford. Coralville police say they do believe it is a safe community, but nonetheless, people need to be aware of their surroundings and be cautious. Its always somewhere else, somebody else's backyard... not my own, says Sproles.

Extremists Urge Mall Attacks
IOWA CITY, IA (CBS2/FOX28)-- Security officials are conducting lockdown drills at the Mall of America.
This comes just days after a Somali militant group released a video calling for attacks on the shopping center.
Mall officials say the drills are done on a monthly basis and are scheduled in advance. Meantime, U.S. Intelligence officials remain skeptical the extremist group could actually carry out attacks against malls in the country.
Here, there are some different options for mall shopping in the Corridor.
Coral Ridge Mall, Lindale Mall or the Old Capitol Mall name a few. Shoppers we talked to say, they feel safe.
Going to shops like this all the time, you really think of it as such a safe place, you never feel threatened, so it just is different to hear that and it is kind of scary, says Simone Fernandez, UI sophomore.
We contacted some local malls for comment on the recently released extremist video and their security. Coral Ridge Mall declined an interview. Old Capitol Mall officials are out of town. Lindale mall forwarded a statement from the International Council of Shopping Centers.
We represent the entire industry. That's everything down from a five or six store front strip center all the way up to, you know, your largest malls, says ICSC Spokesperson Jesse Tron.
Tron says the majority of their members are in the U.S., but no matter where they're located, security is paramount.
This is not a reactionary type of day, you know, because a lot of time and preparation has gone into this and it's something that they take seriously year round, not just when something happens, he says.
Shoppers we talked to say they hope local malls keep up their security.
It's pretty bad. I just hope that doesn't happen here and just concerned about safety, I guess, says UI Junior mark Musiel.
Any center that has a large population of people there, whether it's the airport or a shopping mall or events, there's that heightened level of security and concern, says Gregory P. Johnson of Iowa City.
ICSC says 30,000 security personnel from around the country have gone through their Terrorism Awareness Program.

Open-Carry Mall Cop Fired, Grabs His Gun & The Worst Happens
An Iowa mall cop — with a Facebook account loaded with open-carry and right-wing memes and photos of multiple weapons — is under arrest for shooting and killing a fellow mall worker because she filed sexual harassment complaints against him.
According to The Gazette, Alex Kozak was taken into custody after shooting 20-year-old Andrea Farrington three times in the back while she was at work at the Iowa Children’s Museum in the Coral Ridge Mall in Coralville, Iowa.
Police say that the 22-year-old Kozak left the mall and went to his home and retrieved a 9mm Glock handgun before retuning and shooting Farrington late Friday night.

Campaign Sign Complaints
JOHNSON COUNTY, IA (CBS2/FOX28) -- Less than a week before elections, some in the Corridor are concerned that some corporations or campaigns are breaking state law. Johnson County auditor Travis Weipert said his office has been receiving complaints about a number of campaign signs placed on corporate property in the area, which violates Iowa state code. It's something that Coralville city council incumbent and candidate Bill Hoeft takes very seriously. He said he won't put a sign anywhere he doesn't have permission. You're trying to gain people's votes, and you don't want to upset someone by putting a sign where it doesn't belong, Hoeft said. On a larger scale, Weipert said, campaigns -- and their supporters -- can't be in violation of the law. The current code says: Campaigns Signs shall not be placed on any of the following ... property owned, leased, or occupied by a prohibited contributor under section 68A.503 -- or, corporations. But what if property is owned by a corporation and leased to an individual? What counts and what doesn't? According to Weipert, there is a lot of gray area there. Which is where our office is running into some problems. People think we can go out and play the sign police, which we don't have the legal authority (to do), so we're kind of directing all of those inquiries to Des Moines at this point, Weipert said. Some of those complaints came from the area near the Coral Ridge Mall on 25th Avenue in Coralville. Hoeft also had signs placed in that area, but on private property. He said, in light of the complaints, he had his own questions about whether that land was entirely private or tied to a corporation in some way, and would remove the signs if there was a conflict. That's important for me to run a campaign that I can lay my head down and go to sleep at night and feel good about what I'm trying to accomplish, he said. Weipert said his office can't go out and pick up signs placed in the cities, so people with questions about the placement of a sign should call that city's manager, or the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board, at: (515) 281-4106.
