Corcomroe Abbey - The Burren - County Clare - Ireland

Cette abbaye est située dans un champ, près du village de Ballyvaughan, au nord de la région du Burren. Elle a été érigée à la fin du XIIe siècle avec le calcaire que l'on retrouve dans le Burren.
Encore aujourd'hui, elle demeure dans un état de conservation remarquable. Ses voûtes et ses sculptures sont d'une grande beauté. Le site est très bien entretenu.
Plusieurs pierres tombales gisent sur le sol. Certaines sont très anciennes, datant de plusieurs siècles. Les écritures sont encore visibles et témoignent du passé.
Une légende raconte que c'est le roi Conor Siudane Ua Briain du comté de Thomond qui aurait commandité la construction de cette abbaye. D'ailleurs, sa sculpture funéraire est toujours présente dans un des murs du choeur.
Craignant que les maçons construisent une abbaye encore plus belle et encore plus grande à la demande d'un clan rival, il aurait exigé que les maçons responsables du chantier de l'abbaye soit exécutés.
Cependant, les recherches semblent démontrer qu'il est plus probable que ce serait le grand-père de celui-ci qui aurait commandité la construction de cet édifice puisqu'il avait déjà commandité plusieurs autres constructions religieuses dans cette région. De nombreux moines auraient alors participé à sa réalisation.

L'abbaye de Hore est un monastère en ruines situé à 1 km du Rock of Cashel. Elle aurait été érigée au XIIIe siècle.
Magré le fait que plusieurs siècles se soient écoulés depuis son érection, les vestiges en place nous permettent d'imaginer l'allure qu'elle devait avoir à cette époque puisqu'encore aujourd'hui, les murs sont debout et les fenêtres et voûtes sont encore présentes.
De plus, il est à noter que de cet endroit, nous avons une superbe vue du Rock of Cashel.

Quin Abbey, is a ruined Franciscan abbey or friary in Quin, roughly 9 miles from Ennis, County Clare in Ireland. It was built in the Gothic style in the early 15th century on the remains of an earlier Norman castle. The abbey had a turbulent history, with the friars driven off or killed numerous times. Officially suppressed in 1541, the abbey continued to be inhabited by a small number of friars until 1820. Today, Quin Abbey is a National Monument.
