Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba, Córdoba, Andalusia, Spain, Europe
The Mosque-cathedral of Córdoba, also known as the Great Mosque of Córdoba, whose ecclesiastical name is the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, is the Catholic Christian cathedral of the Diocese of Córdoba dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and located in the Spanish region of Andalusia. The structure is regarded as one of the most accomplished monuments of Moorish architecture. It originally was a Catholic Christian church built by the Visigoths,. When Muslims conquered Spain in 711, the church was first divided into Muslim and Christian halves. This sharing arrangement of the site lasted until 784, when the Christian half was purchased by the Caliph 'Abd al-Rahman I, who then proceeded to demolish the entire structure and build the grand mosque of Cordoba on its ground. After the Reconquista, it was converted to a Roman Catholic church, culminating in the insertion of a Renaissance cathedral nave int the 16th century. Since the early 2000s, Spanish Muslims have lobbied the Roman Catholic Church to allow them to pray in the cathedral. This Muslim campaign has been rejected on multiple occasions, both by the church authorities in Spain and by the Vatican. The cathedral was originally a Catholic Christian church dedicated to Saint Vincent. After the Islamic conquest of the Visigothic kingdom, the building was divided between the Muslims and Christians. When the exiled Umayyad prince Abd al-Rahman I escaped to Iberia and defeated the governor of Al-Andalus, Yusuf al-Fihri, he found the Cordovese divided into various sects, including the Gnostics, Priscillianists, Donatists, and Luciferians. His ambition was to erect a temple which would rival in magnificence those of Baghdad, Jerusalem, and Damascus, and approach in sanctity the fame of Mecca. Above a Christian church dedicated do Saint Vincent, Abd al-Rahman decided to raise his great mosque. He offered to buy the church and the plot. The negotiations for the sale were placed in the hands of the Sultan's favourite secretary, Umeya ibn Yezid. Under the terms of the transfer, the Cordovese were permitted to reconstruct the church formerly dedicated to St Faustus, St Januarius, and St Marcellus, three Christian martyrs whom they deeply revered. Abd al-Rahman allowed the Christians to rebuild their ruined churches and purchased the Christian half of the church of St Vincent. The Caliph was rich. Apart from the treasure wrested from the Goths during the recent wars, he also extracted a tithe upon the produce of the land and on manufactures. Muslims in Andalusia were asked to provide to pay the Zakat. A mandatory tax known as Jizya was also laid upon every Christian and Jew in Andalusia as a precondition for being allowed to practice their religion and as payment for protection against foreign aggression. The Jyzia was far greater than the Zakat and it was one of the main sources of income for the Muslim rulers in lands occupied by Islamic tribes but populated still by Christians. Beyond this, the Moorish kings were greatly enriched by the acquisition of the valuable mines of Iberia, the quarries of marble, and other sources of wealth. From these revenues Abd al-Rahman and his successors, Hisham, Abd-erRahman II, the greatest of the dynasty and the third of the line, and lastly the extravagant Almanzor, lavished large sums upon the designing, construction, and costly adornment of the Mosque. Abd al-Rahman I and his descendants reworked the building over the following two centuries to fashion it as a mosque, starting in 784. Additionally, Abd al-Rahman I used the mosque (originally called Aljama Mosque) as an adjunct to his palace and named it in honour of his wife. Traditionally, the mihrab (or apse) of a mosque faces in the direction of Mecca; by facing the mihrab, worshipers pray towards Mecca. Mecca is east-southeast of the mosque, but the mihrab of this mosque unusually points south. The work of building the resplendent Mezquita employed thousands of artisans and labourers, and such a vast undertaking led to the development of all the resources of the district. Hard stone and beautifully veined marbles were quarried from the Sierra Morena and the surrounding regions of the city. Metals of various kinds were dug from the soil, and factories sprang up in Cordova amid the stir and bustle of an awakened industrial energy.
Cinematic Vlog Malaga Cordoba Andalusia - Sony A7iii, Sony A 6300, Dji Spark video
A quick look on my trip to beautiful Andalusia. Spain was the last country we visited in our 3-week vacation and we stayed there for about four days. We visited Malaga, Cordoba, and Nerja.
This is the second time I've been to Malaga so I kind of knew what to expect. I did my homework very good so we went straight for the most beautiful sites in this region. The problem, however, was our very limited time and the fact that we were already exhausted after an intense two week of shooting. So we couldn't do much much on our last two days.
I would definitely come back in this region to do a more extensive documentary on the culture, which is a very beautiful mix of Moorish and western European sprinkled with flamenco all over.

SPAIN: CORDOBA: FLAMENCO DANCERS ENTERTAIN PRISONERS
Spanish/Nat
As any prison inmate knows a stretch behind bars means a life of frustration, boredom and loss of liberty.
With time on their hands prisoners often find inventive ways of channelling their aspirations into hobbies, sometimes even becoming experts in their own field of craft or study.
The Provincial Prison in Cordoba in Spain is no exception, apart from one additional fact.
Inmates there are finding that pursuing their talents can not only lead to personal improvement but also a taste of the outside world again.
Reverberating through the metal grills, bars, lock-ups and landings of Cordoba Prison, the sound of flamenco fills the air.
Inmates - more used to the noise of banging doors and clanking steel - lean over the balconies, taking in the music like fresh air.
On a stage in a wing of the prison a woman dances like a gypsy, stomping her heels in time to the guitar.
She is one of a dozen such performers, but these dancers are not the typical entertainers who entrance tourists in flamenco spectacles across southern Spain.
The women - and the musicians who accompany them - are all convicted felons.
Most have been performing flamenco since they were children, sometimes singing in the streets for spare change.
If flamenco - like its American counterpart, the blues - was born of suffering and deprivation, then the music being produced at Cordoba is about as close to its roots as it can get.
Now the prisoners' flamenco is coming to the world outside.
The inmates - trained in a prison workshop - recently began performing on special leave for flamenco devotees in towns.
Two of the singers are also about to record their first C-D (compact disc).
Jail officials encourage the prisoners to perform, saying they're expressing what's in their blood.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
Then there is always a certain anxiety, and many of them being gypsies, this singing just came naturally from their soul.
SUPER CAPTION: Ignacio Morales, Assistant Warden, Cordoba Jail
Between the dancers and players and the street outside though stand machine-gun toting guards, locked doors and bullet-proof glass.
There are some 600 inmates packed behind the prison's cream-coloured walls - double the number it was designed for.
Flamenco dancing is not the only way to keep the prisoners occupied and frustrations from boiling over.
The prison also has its own radio station - aptly named Escape Radio.
It broadcasts over a half-mile radius, allowing a small part of the outside world to listen in.
The station's disc jockey is a convicted drug trafficker.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
What happened is that I infringed public-health law, in other words I was caught with 250 grams of hashish, but someone added 750 grams, and I have been sentenced for the possession of 1 kilogramme.
SUPER CAPTION: Paco Duran, disk jockey on Radio Escape
The prison also provides other opportunities to channel tensions, with classes ranging from martial arts to ceramics.
Just as the radio station enables the inmates to travel outside, so the dance and music frees the prisoners' minds.
There is also the chance it will open doors and enable the prisoners to go outside.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
One feels it because it runs in our blood, but I might also get an early permit to leave the jail and go to sing in other places. That is also why I am struggling.
SOUNDBITE: Carmelo Planton, flamenco singer and guitar player
Despite the confines of prison, the rhythm takes the prisoners anywhere they want to go, and for many doing what comes naturally is proving to be the best answer to prison life of all.

Ritsers Andalucia 7 juni 2016 Sevilla - Cordoba
