Biggest Glass Museum - Corning Museum of Glass
Biggest Glass Museum - Corning NY
Founded in 1951 by Corning Glass Works (now Corning Incorporated) as a gift to the nation for the company’s 100th anniversary, The Corning Museum of Glass is a not-for-profit museum dedicated to telling the story of a single material: glass.
The concept seems so simple. How much can you say about glass? Actually, quite a lot. Glass is a versatile, ancient material that is still being explored and understood by artists, scientists, and historians today. The story of glass is a story about art, history, culture, technology, science, craft and design. And we tell that story at The Corning Museum of Glass.
The Corning Museum of Glass cares for and displays the world’s best collection of art and historical glass. When you visit, you’ll see more than 3,500 years of history displayed in the Glass Collection Galleries, from the glass portrait of an ancient Egyptian pharaoh to contemporary sculpture made in glass.

If you came to see GlassBarge this summer, you were a part of history. Over the past four months, the GlassBarge journey brought glassmaking to all corners of New York State. From Brooklyn to Buffalo, we celebrated the Erie Canal and New York's waterways.

David Colton, 34th Rakow Commission Recipient
Hear from David Colton, maker of the first glass cannabis pipe, also known as functional glass, to ever be accessioned into an art museum's collection. Learn more about the work, now on view at The Corning Museum of Glass
Since the late 1990s, glass has been the material of choice for cannabis pipes. Originating in the “parking lot” scene of Grateful Dead concerts, pipe making has since emerged as a global phenomenon with a highly developed culture of makers, collectors, and enthusiasts. Operating outside the mainstream of glass and art, pipe makers looked to street art and pop culture for inspiration as they made works that obscured their function and skirted legality. Colton’s pipe enters the Corning Museum’s collection amidst changing conversations about cannabis, with the decriminalization and legalization of its use being passed in many states and municipalities in the United States.

Inaugurated in 1986 by The Corning Museum of Glass, the Rakow Commission supports the development of new works of art in glass. This program, which provides $25,000 each year, is made possible through the generosity of the late Dr. and Mrs. Leonard S. Rakow, who were Museum Fellows, friends, and benefactors of the Museum. Each commissioned work is added to the Museum's collection.

Featuring annual traditions rooted in the city’s rich Dutch heritage, nearly one hundred artisans selling their handmade crafts, a fine arts show, delicious food, the KidZone family fun destination, two stages of world-class live entertainment and more than 140,000 tulips in 150 different varieties, the Tulip Festival is a sparkling showcase of local culture and business. It all takes place in historic Washington Park, the 81-acre “crown jewel” of the City.
Mayor Erastus Corning 2nd declared the tulip as Albany's official flower on July 1, 1948, there has been a Tulip Festival every year since.
On July 11, 1948 Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands selected the Orange Wonder, an 18-inch tall tulip that is orange-shaded with a scarlet toward the center as Albany's tulip.
The first Tulip Fest was celebrated the next year on May 14, 1949 with opening ceremonies still carried on today as tradition, such as the sweeping of State Street and the crowning of a Tulip Queen.
In 1997 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the festival the state of New York designated Albany as the I Love New York Spring Destination
For the 50th anniversary a descendant variety of the Wonder Orange tulip was found in the Netherlands, and the new variety was named City of Albany

Corning Museum Glass Barge At Riverfront Park in Troy, NY on 6/22/18
This particular show took place at Riverfront Park in Troy, NY on June 22, 2018.
In 1868, the Brooklyn Flint Glass Company relocated to Corning, via the New York Waterways, and evolved into the company that is today known as Corning Incorporated. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of this pivotal journey, CMoG launched GlassBarge—a 30’ x 80’ canal barge equipped with CMoG’s patented all-electric glassmaking equipment—in Brooklyn Bridge Park on May 17, 2018. It's planned travel is north on the Hudson, then westward along the Erie Canal before making its way to the Finger Lakes. It will stop at ports in Yonkers, Poughkeepsie, Kingston, Albany, Little Falls, Sylvan Beach, Baldwinsville, Fairport, Lockport, Buffalo, Medina, Brockport, Pittsford, Seneca Falls, and Watkins Glen. A ceremonial last leg of the trip will take place by land, concluding in Corning with a community-wide celebration on September 22.
In addition to sharing the story of glassmaking in Corning, the GlassBarge tour emphasizes the continued role of New York’s waterways in shaping the state’s industry, culture, and community. GlassBarge is the 2018 signature event for the statewide celebration of the Erie Canal Bicentennial. The GlassBarge journey will also be celebrated back in Corning with a re-installation of the Crystal City Gallery, which shares the story of how Corning became one of the premier centers for glass cutting in the United States.
