American Battle Monument Cemetery in Corozal Panama
This video presents a brief narrated tour of Corozal American Cemetery's landscaped grounds, architecture, and works of art.
The American Battle Monuments Commission assumed responsibility for the care and maintenance of the Corozal American Cemetery in Panama in 1982. At this 16-acre cemetery are interred 5,364 American veterans and others. A paved walk leads from the Visitor Center to a small memorial that sits atop a knoll overlooking the graves area. The memorial consists of a paved plaza with a 12-foot rectangular granite obelisk flanked by two flagpoles on which fly the United States and Panamanian flags. Engraved on the obelisk in English and Spanish is the following inscription:
THIS MEMORIAL HAS BEEN ERECTED BY THE
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
IN HUMBLE TRIBUTE TO ALL INTERRED HERE
WHO SERVED IN ITS ARMED FORCES OR
CONTRIBUTED TO THE CONSTRUCTION,
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE OF
THE PANAMA CANAL
The cemetery is open daily to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. except December 25 and January 1. It is open on host country holidays. When the cemetery is open to the public, a staff member is on duty in the Visitor Building to answer questions and escort relatives to grave and memorial sites.
PANAMA: The abandoned CEMETERY of COROZAL for the PANAMA CANAL WORKERS ⚱️
SUBSCRIBE: - At the Atlantic terminus of the Panama Canal, within the gates of Mount Hope Cemetery, the landscape of graves reveals some of Panama’s rich history. Originally known as the Monkey Hill Cemetery, Mount Hope became the burial ground for black West Indian immigrants who died working on the intercontinental Panama Railroad for the American Panamanian Railroad Corporation between 1850 and 1855. As work began on the canal, first with the French Canal Company (1880–1889) and later during the American period (1904–1914), the cemetery became the resting place for thousands of Jamaican, Barbadian, and other West Indian canal laborers, known as the Silver People. During the time of the railroad, a policy of separate payrolls based on race was first implemented; the French adopted the practice, and the Americans continued the segregated system through the Gold and Silver Rolls. “Gold” referred to the primarily white American employees, who received higher pay and more privileges. “Silver” were the nonwhites subjected to inferior working and living conditions, and were likewise segregated in death. Together with the Corozal Cemetery, located at the Pacific end of the Panama Canal, these burial landscapes are an important reminder of the lives lost to one of the most significant and iconic water passages in the world, and of the racial, social, and economic exclusion many suffered in its construction. Grossly neglected for years, many of the gravestones are overgrown and deteriorating, while some graves have been completely exhumed. Encroaching industrial development and attempts by the Authority of the Panama Canal to expand the waterway further jeopardize the site.
Panama is a country on the isthmus linking Central and South America. The Panama Canal, a famous feat of human engineering, cuts through its center, linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to create an essential shipping route. In the capital, Panama City, modern skyscrapers, casinos and nightclubs contrast with colonial buildings in the Casco Viejo district and the rainforest of Natural Metropolitan Park.

Submarine inventor's remains exhumed after discovered in Panama cemetery
The remains of a German-born engineer who reportedly invented the modern submarine was exhumed in Panama City on Oct. 11, as archaeologists investigate the cause of death of the inventor.
Julius Kroehl reportedly created the first modern submarine capable of submerging and emerging from the water on its own. It was used in Panama by the Pacific Pearl Company to look for pearls in waters near Panama around the mid 19th century.
Kroehl reportedly died from malaria in Panama at age 47 in 1867.
The case has attracted the interest of the United States Embassy in Panama and archaeologist James Delgado, who will be overseeing the investigation. Although born in Germany, Kroehl moved to the United States of America at age 24 and he was later naturalized. He also served in the U.S. naval force.
Once the investigation is complete, Kroehl will be re-buried in the American cemetery in Panama with military honours.

Battle of the Bulge
The French Cemetery in Paraiso, Republic of Panama
This show captures images of the French Cemetery where hundreds, perhaps thousands, of West Indians from Jamaica, Martinique and Saint Lucia are buried. These are very old burials from the time of The French Canal construction era (1881-1891 approx). Note that, except for the White Frenchman engineer and his wife's graves- which are named), most of the graves are of Black workers and families from the Caribbean. We at The Silver People Heritage Foundation are working to identify and preserve this burial ground as a Heritage site to Humanity. Visit our web sites at The Silver People Heritage Foundation and The Silver People Chronicle.
