Old Canberra. Ainslie. Old photos of the suburb Ainslie in Canberra, Australia. Ainslie is a leafy suburb of Canberra, Australia in the North Canberra district.
The suburb is bounded by Limestone Avenue and Majura Avenue to the west and north, Phillip Avenue to the north-east, Mount Ainslie to the east and Quick Street to the south.The suburb was named after James Ainslie, a veteran of the Battle of Waterloo, the first overseer of 'Duntroon Station' in Canberra who was employed by Robert Campbell in 1825 to drive a mob of sheep south from Bathurst 'until he found suitable land'; Ainslie chose the Limestone Plains (the Canberra district) and was overseer for ten years before returning to Scotland.
James Ainslie was reputed to have camped in 1825 under gum trees at what is now Corroboree Park.Iris Carnell, born in 1900 and one of the original inhabitants of Paterson Street in the 1920s, recounted in 'Voices of Old Ainslie' that her mother, Celia Tong, born at Lanyon in 1871, remembered as a little girl what is now Corroboree Park as a scene of aboriginal corroborees. She said the aborigines used to sit around the tree now near the barbecues which has four trees growing from its centre.
Ainslie has three housing precincts planned on Garden City principles that were gazetted onto the ACT Government's Heritage Register in 2004. The first stage of the Corroboree Park precinct was constructed between 1925 and 1927 to accommodate tradesmen for the construction of the city. The Alt Crescent precinct was designed for the members of the Federal Capital Commission and built in 1926. The houses were originally occupied by the founding staff of the FCC. The curved street design appears to derive from Walter Burley Griffin’s original plan for Canberra which shows a small crescent off Limestone Avenue at the end of Ainslie Avenue.The first stage of the Wakefield Gardens precinct was constructed between 1925 and 1929 to accommodate lower income public servants and workmen for the opening of the new Parliament House in Canberra in 1927.
The division (or suburb) name Ainslie was gazetted by the Government in 1928. The streets of Ainslie are named after pioneers and legislators.
Iris Carnell also records that when the then-Duke and Duchess of York came to Canberra to open Parliament House in 1927, the Duchess, later Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother, expressed an interest in visiting a typical local family. She was invited to tea with the Truesdale family at 20 Corroboree Park (on the northern corner of Higgins Crescent).
Originally a predominantly blue-collar suburb with a high proportion of public housing, Ainslie has gradually gentrified, with properties regularly fetching more than $1 million. Perhaps paradoxically, among the most sought-after properties in the suburb are the heritage-listed cottages built during the conservative governments of Stanley Bruce and Joseph Lyons, which are set mainly among European trees.

Following the production of my previous video which highlighted concerns about 'the detention of children behind bars' in places of asylum; and 'the cruelty of caging animals in cramped conditions'... I decided I needed an escape to my favourite retreat here in Canberra, Australia. I took my camera with me... and this video features a selection of scenes that I photographed.
How nice it was for me to escape the madness of this world if only for the one day... what a shame it is however, that children and animals in many parts of the world are not afforded the same freedoms that I myself take for granted !

The Tidbinbilla Valley also reflects the European history of the area. Century old rammed earth cottages, and evidence of farming and eucalyptus oil distillation, provide graphic reminders of the pioneers who tried to make a life here from the mid-1800s.

Rock wallabies at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve
I recently spent a night out south of Canberra helping Tidbinbilla rangers and ecologists from ACT Parks and Wildlife with their surveys of the endangered Southern brush-tailed rock wallabies. There are only 80 of these remarkable Australian animals left in the world. Without the support and efforts of places like Tidbinbilla, they would most likely be #extinct in the wild.
Australia's #ThreatenedSpecies Strategy is for all our creatures great and small. This is just one of their stories.
Cowra High School Talks Human Rights
As part of the 70th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, students from Cowra High School located in rural New South Wales in Australia, learnt about human rights and then put together this video on what they learned and why they thought human rights are important. Namadgi Rock Art
A quick visit to the rock painting site at Namadgi National Park near Canberra. These paintings are said to be at least 800 years old.
Aboriginal countries in Australia would meet at this site to feast on Bogong moths and have a corroboree (a ceremonial meeting). A truce would be in place during the corroboree.

Smoking ceremony at Knuckeys Lagoon in 1996.
In 1996, some months after a young man died in a tragic accident at the Knuckeys Lagoon community, preparations were make for a 'Burning rag' ceremony where his possessions would be burnt and his house smoked to put the spirits to rest. His friends and relatives would also pass through the smoke to be cleansed. Dancers came to Darwin from the homelands, the man's possession were wrapped in red cloth, a hole was dug for the fire and bright material was hung to pay the dancers. When everything was ready, men and women painted themselves before they danced toward the house of the deceased. After two houses were smoked to sacred singing, the main fire was lit as the grieving mother tried to wrestle away her son's last possessions destined for the fire. As the son's clothes burned, everyone paraded through the smoke. At the end, the dancers took down the material hung around the fire and the hole was filled in by the man's uncle.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is approximately around a 40-50 min drive from Surfers Paradise. You definitely need to spend the full day there to see everything.
