Courthouse and Jail Rocks are two rock formations located near Bridgeport in the Nebraska Panhandle.
The Oregon-California Trail, the Mormon Trail, the Pony Express Trail and the Sidney-Deadwood Trail all ran near the rocks. The pair of rock formations served as a landmark along the trails for many pioneers traveling west in the 19th century. Many travelers would stray as much as five miles (8 km) from the Oregon Trail just to get a glimpse of the rocks.
Hundreds of westward-bound emigrants mentioned Courthouse Rock (originally also McFarlan's Castle) in their travel logs and journals. The name Courthouse was first used in 1837.[3] In 1845, one traveler described the rock as resembling the ruins of an old castle [which] rises abruptly from the plain....It is difficult to look upon it and not believe that art had something to do with its construction. The voyagers have called it the Courthouse; but it looks infinitely more like the Capitol.[4]
Courthouse and Jail Rocks, which rise 400 feet (121 m) above the North Platte Valley, are composed of Brule clay, Gering sandstone and volcanic ash. The rock formations are listed in the National Register of Historic Places and in the Nebraska Natural Areas Register. Drone video taken with a DJI Mavic Pro 2. Tour De Nebraska - KNEB News Extra!

The 32nd Tour de Nebraska announced its route for June 19-23, 2019. This bicycle adventure starts and ends in Sidney.
Day 1: Sidney to Kimball – 38 miles
Day 2: Kimball to Gering – 44 miles
Day 3: Gering to Scottsbluff – 5, 30 or 77-100 miles
Day 4: Scottsbluff to Bridgeport – 51 miles
Day 5: Bridgeport to Sidney – 45 miles
This 5-day bicycle adventure totals about 243 miles.
It will feature breathtaking views of Wildcat Hills into the North Platte Valley, Scotts Bluff National Monument, Courthouse and Jail Rocks. The historic Lincoln Highway will take you to the Potter Sundry. The points of interest along the way will include Legacy of the Plains Museum, Brown Sheep Company, Flyover Brewing Company and Five Rocks Amphitheater and much more.
Tour de Nebraska estimates 500 riders from 25 states will experience Nebraska from the seat of a bicycle. Nebraska charm will be on full display as the TDN riders head West to the Nebraska Panhandle for the first-time ever.

Droning the Ghost Town of Antioch Nebraska, by Sheriff Mike
Antioch is a ghost town in Sheridan County, Nebraska, United States. Located approximately 15 miles east of Alliance on Nebraska Highway 2, the town was once nicknamed the potash capital of Nebraska. The town took its name from Antioch, Ohio.
History
Antioch is located in the sparsely-populated Sandhills region of western Nebraska. According to one historian, the year before the United States became involved in World War I, the town only had one schoolhouse, a church, and a store.
In 1917, scientists at the University of Nebraska introduced a method of distilling potash from the water of alkali lakes which dotted the Sandhills. Potash had been primarily imported from Germany prior to World War I. German potash had sold for around $8 to $10 per ton, but scarcity during the war drove the price of potash to $150 a ton.
Antioch's proximity to several major alkali lakes made it the logical home of five potash reduction factories: the American, Nebraska, Alliance, National, and Western potash companies. All these companies were major suppliers of potash during World War I. With the factories came works and by Spring of 1918, Antioch had grown into a small city with a population of over 5,000 people.
The potash from Antioch was used during the war in the production of fertilizer, Epsom salts, soda, and other products. The land on which the factories in Antioch had been built were state-owned and the government's leasing them to private companies attracted public scrutiny. To combat the rumors of favoritism, the Nebraska Secretary of State and Nebraska State Land Commissioner issued a press release claiming that they had leased the land privately rather than public to avoid delay because our country needs the product for munitions. Potash was not used in munitions, but the public generally accepted the falsehood as fact.

When Germany and France resumed trade with the United States in 1921, the potash trade was decimated. German and French potash was cheaper to produce than Nebraska potash and thus destroyed the market for American-made potash. The factories immediately closed. The machinery was sold for scrap; the factories were demolished for the salvage value of the building materials; and the company housing was torn down or moved. Only the foundations of the factories and of some of the larger houses remained. Today, Antioch has fewer than 25 residents.
In 1979, the remains of Antioch's potash plants were added to the National Register of Historic Places, and a historical marker can be found west of what remains of Antioch commemorating the factories and boomtown.

Monolith
A monolith is a geological feature consisting of a single massive stone or rock, such as some mountains, or a single large piece of rock placed as, or within, a monument or building. Erosion usually exposes the geological formations, which are often made of very hard and solid metamorphic or igneous rock.
In architecture, the term has considerable overlap with megalith, which is normally used for prehistory, and may be used in the contexts of rock-cut architecture that remains attached to solid rock, as in monolithic church, or for exceptionally large stones such as obelisks, statues, monolithic columns or large architraves, that may have been moved a considerable distance after quarrying. It may also be used of large glacial erratics moved by natural forces.
