The British military cemetery at Koksijde, Belgium is located very close to where the front would have been in WW1. In June 1917, Commonwealth forces relieved French forces on 6 kilometres of front line from the sea to a point south of Nieuport (now Nieuwpoort), and held this sector for six months. Koksijde (or Coxyde as it was then called) was about 10 kilometres behind the front line. The village was used for rest billets and was occasionally shelled, but the cemetery, which had been started by French troops, was found to be reasonably safe. It became the most important of the Commonwealth cemeteries on the Belgian coast and was used at night for the burial of the dead brought back from the front line. The French returned to the sector in December 1917 and continued to use the cemetery, and during 1918, Commonwealth naval casualties from bases in Dunkirk were buried there. After the Armistice, graves were brought into the cemetery from isolated sites and from other cemeteries in the area.
The cemetery was used again during the Second World War, chiefly for the burial of casualties sustained during the defence of the Dunkirk perimeter in May 1940.
The cemetery now contains 1,507 Commonwealth burials of the First World War, the French graves from this period having since been removed. Of the 154 Second World War burials, 22 are unidentified. The cemetery was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.

That is not to say that the other countries are forgotten, they are not, but obviously there is less going on. However the fact that there are so many travel related films here is not from holidays but from business trips attending trade fairs around the region. Every packaging trade fair is a new excuse to make another film!

Last week we passed a very nice weekend on the Belgian coast in Koksijde. Ciustax and land yachting were at the menu. A big thanks you to all my friends who have allowed me to spend a few pleasant days.

Wouter Liekens holds a degree in hotel management from the renowned Belgian hotel school Ter Duinen, Koksijde (Belgium).
He started his career as sous-chef at the London Hilton on Park Lane and the Royal Garden Hotel, Knightsbridge. Subsequently, he was executive sous chef at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Dubai and executive chef at The Great Wall Sheraton, in Beijing and Le Meridien in Vilnius.
His career evolved further from F&B manager to operations manager at the Brussels Hilton. He subsequently became general manager at Hotel Metropole Brussels.
During his professional career he also obtained an MBA at the University of Liverpool (Great Britain) and a CDP at Cornell University (USA).
Currently, he is Creative Hospitality Expert at Cherto, Council Member at GLG (Gerson Lehrman Group). He is the driving force behind Chertoproducts, Lecturer International Hotel Management at the Brussels Business Institute and Expert Guest Speaker at Demos for the European Parliament.
