Old Photographs Cramond Edinburgh Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Cramond, Scottish Gaelic: Cathair Amain, a village and suburb in the north west of Edinburgh, at the mouth of the River Almond where it enters the Firth of Forth. The Cramond area has a long history, with evidence of Mesolithic, Bronze Age and Roman activity. In modern times, it was the birthplace of the Scottish economist John Law, born 1671, died 1729. Cramond was incorporated into the City of Edinburgh by Act of Parliament in 1920. There were four Mills owned by Caddell and Company, who first settled in Cramond in 1771. The four connected with this company were located within a short distance of each other, they were, Cockle Mill, Peggie's Mill, Dowies Mill and Fairafar Mill. There has been a small ferry crossing across the River Almond at Cramond since the middle of 1800. For many people Cramond is associated with The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, where Mr. Lowther has his home and Miss Brodie spends much of her time. Cramond is also where the House of Shaws is located in Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped. Cramond is also mentioned in Ian Rankin's Fleshmarket Close.n his Tales of a Grandfather, Sir Walter Scott records the traditional tale of how King James V was attacked while walking across the bridge. He was rescued by a local tenant farmer, Jock Howieson, who he later rewarded with a gift of the land he worked at Braepark. The King asked in return that Howieson and his descendants should be prepared to wash the monarch's hands either at Holyrood Palace or when they passed by Cramond Brig. How often this duty was carried out in the following centuries is not known.A tower house, Cramond Tower, probably built in the early 15th century was once a manor house of the Bishops of Dunkeld. Cramond House. Its central part is late 17th century, with classical front added in 1778 and back in 1820. Queen Victoria visited while residing at Holyrood. It has been claimed as a possible original of R. L. Stevenson’s House of Shaws in Kidnapped. Cramond Kirk is a cruciform Kirk of 1656 with 15th century tower. Interior altered 1701, 1811. Large reconstruction 1911 by Donald McArthy and James Mather.

The Cramond area has a long history, with evidence of Mesolithic, Bronze Age and Roman activity. In modern times, it was the birthplace of the Scottish economist John Law (1671-1729). Cramond was incorporated into the City of Edinburgh by Act of Parliament in 1920.
Archaeological excaations at Cramond have uncovered evidence of habitation dating to around 8500 BC, making it, for a time, the earliest known site of human settlement in Scotland.
The inhabitants of the Mesolithic camp-site were nomadic hunter-gatherers who moved around their territories according to the season of the year. Although no bones survived the acid soil, waste pits and stakeholes that would have supported shelters or windbreaks were excavated. Numerous discarded hazelnut shells, the waste product of the inhabitants' staple food, were found in the pits and used to carbon-date the site. It is thought the site was chosen for its location near the junction of the Firth of forth and the River Almond, where the rich oyster and mussel beds proved a reliable natural resource. Many microlith stone tools manufactured at the site were found, and pre-date finds of similar style in England.
Cramond developed slowly over the centuries with Cramond Kirk being founded in 1656. After a brief period spent as an industrial village in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, by the late 19th century it became a desirable suburb of Edinburgh, which it remains to this day.

Avoided getting stuck on a tidal island! Cramond Island, EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND
Cramond Island is a tidal island with a post-apocalyptic feel, located in a quiet Edinburgh suburb. You may be wondering what on Earth is a tidal island. Well, it's an island in the sea, which you reach by walking across the seabed when it is low tide. In the case of Cramond Island, that means there’s a chance that you could get stuff there if you don’t watch the time, and the tides. Watch an Austrian and a Bajan explore their first tidal island!

Cramond Island Beaches - Edinburgh, Scotland
Cramond Island, Edinburgh
Since the end of the 1800's Cramond has become one of the most desirable of Edinburghs residential suburbs. With an attractive Village atmosphere: the beach and the shoreline walks and the harbour in the mouth of the river but a steady stream of aircraft passing overhead on their way into nearby Edinburgh airport seems to do little to put people off.

Hill Walks in Pictures...John Muir Way, part 10... Cramond to Musselburgh
Here we describe the route the JMW takes as it crosses the city of Edinburgh. The designers of the Way have cleverly managed to maintain a countryside feel to this section, despite being in the middle of Scotland's capital city. Thus although there are some busy roads to cross, and some houses to pass, most of the route follows far more scenic features
. We visit Corstorphine Hill, the Water of Leith walkway, various parks, an aqueduct at the Union Canal, Holyrood Park, an ex railway, now a cycleway, more parks, river side paths to get back to the coast at Fisherrow Harbour in Musselburgh.
Of course, this route omits a visit to the historic city centre, but a tempting detour across Holyrood Park via the great little hill of Arthur's Seat will remedy that....this will be described in the next
video.
