The Croatian Museum of Naive Art
This exhibition space of self-taught masters stands in the historic Upper Town, drawing in visitors by its exquisite collection of naive art - from Generalić to Rabuzin and Lacković, and the gloomy themes to idyllic landscapes.
CROATIA NAIVE ART
Hlebine is the center of Croatian naive art. The Hlebine School is the term applied to a group of naive painters working in or around the village of Hlebine, near the Hungarian border, from about 1930. The school developed from the encouragement given by Krsto Hegedušić to the young painter Ivan Generalić, whom he met in 1930. Generalić and his friends Franjo Mraz (also a native of Hlebine) and Mirko Virius (from the nearby village of Đelekovec) formed the nucleus of the group. In 1931, they were invited to exhibit with the Earth group, which brought public recognition and naive art became a popular form of artistic expression in Croatia, making a strong social statement about the harshness of rural life. Generalić was the first master of the Hlebine School, and the first to develop a distinctive personal style, achieving a high standard in his art.
After the Second World War, the next generation of Hlebine painters tended to focus more on stylized depictions of country life taken from imagination. Generalić continued to be the dominant figure, and encouraged younger artists, including his son Josip Generalić. By the 1950s the school had become well-known internationally, and showed their work at leading exhibitions such as the São Paulo Art Biennial in 1955. The Croatian Museum of Naive Art in Zagreb has a comprehensive display of the works of the Hlebine School and other naive artists.
Some of the best known naive artists are Dragan Gaži, Ivan Generalić, Josip Generalić, Krsto Hegedušić, Mijo Kovačić, Ivan Lacković-Croata, Franjo Mraz, Ivan Večenaj and Mirko Virius.

Zagreb is a city in Central Croatia and the capital of Croatia. Zagreb is a vibrant city of more than 800K people (metropolitan area: more than 1.1 million). The city boasts a charming medieval 'old city' look with architecture and cobbled streets reminiscent of Vienna, Budapest, Prague and other Central European cities. In 2018 it was visited by about 1.2 million tourists, mainly from South Korea, United States, Germany, China and Italy. The imposing mountain overlooking Zagreb (Medvednica) contains a preserved fortress (Medvedgrad) and fascinating views of the city. Being respectful in the fort is a good idea, since it is the site of the Altar of the Homeland memorial, dedicated to Croatian soldiers who died in the Homeland war. There are several historical festivals during the year, including knights tournaments.

The historical part of the city to the north of Ban Jelačić Square is composed of the Gornji Grad and Kaptol, a medieval urban complex of churches, palaces, museums, galleries and government buildings that are popular with tourists on sightseeing tours. The historic district can be reached on foot, starting from Jelačić Square, the centre of Zagreb, or by a funicular on nearby Tomićeva Street. Each Saturday, (from April till the end of September), on St. Mark's Square in the Upper town, tourists can meet members of the Order of The Silver Dragon (Red Srebrnog Zmaja), who reenact famous historical conflicts between Gradec and Kaptol. It's a great opportunity for all visitors to take photographs of authentic and fully functional historical replicas of medieval armour.
Zagreb's numerous museums reflect the history, art and culture not only of Zagreb and Croatia, but also of Europe and the world.

Every year for the last twenty years, the Ethnographic Museum in Zagreb sent several Croatian nativity scenes to the competition Cento Presepi (A Hundred Nativities) in Rome. Over the years, Croatian nativities have won many prizes. For the Advent season of 2013, they were exhibited in the museum.

Croatian artists in the town of Koprivnica have swapped their canvasses for giant eggs to celebrate Easter.
The unusual creations, measuring up to two metres high, are the work of painters from the Podravina region, the heart of Croatian naive art.
Born in the 1930s, Croatian naive art gained international acclaim over the following decades with works on show at leading art exhibitions around the world.

We mostly paint the natural wealth from this village. We want to show it everywhere where there are no such things, regardless of where this egg will be exhibited, whether in Madrid or New York. In New York, in the middle of Manhattan, one certainly cannot find such beautiful cottages surrounded by vineyards, authentic stone houses, amphitheatres or sea. With our painting we wish to show people what we have in Croatia.

We are taking some artists who will paint on the small eggs in a traditional manner. We will also take the artists who painted these large Easter eggs and who will present a marvellous technique of naive glass painting.

Croatia has this tradition of painting on eggs for Easter. That can be done in many ways and na�ve painters have shown that is possible to do it in this different manner too. At home we certainly won't have such large eggs in such a beautiful environment.

Easter is an important time of year in Catholic Croatia.
The celebration of the resurrection of Jesus is symbolised by re-birth, in the form of lambs, eggs and flowers typical of spring time.
Eggs are often decorated in traditional art forms and in north western Croatia that means na�ve art.
STORYLINE:
Croatia's large painted eggs are set to become ambassadors for the country, thanks to an initiative by the local tourist board.
Fourteen large Easter eggs will travel to thirteen cities around the world.
The eggs, painted in the naive style, will adorn squares in several Croatian cities including Zagreb (which has two eggs), Dubrovnik, Varazdin, Krizevci, Durdevac, Bjelovar, Klagenfurt, Budapest, Bratislava, Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and New York.
Na�ve art in South East Europe started in the early thirties of the last century in and around the village of Hlebine, in north-western Croatia.
Self-taught and primitive by definition, naive artists of the so called Hlebine School paint landscapes, peasants, cows and roosters.
The images may recall the simple renderings of a child or a neolithic cave painting in their innocence and originality.
Today this tradition is maintained in Hlebine by some 50 na�ve painters.

Ivan Generalic Croatian Naïve Art Painter
Ivan Generalić (December 21, 1914 -- November 27, 1992) was a Croatian naïve art painter. Generalić was born in Hlebine near Koprivnica. In elementary school, painting lessons were his greatest joy and as a child he used to earn money. He mostly drew with pencil on paper bags and some of these sketches were seen by Krsto Hegedušić, at the time (1930) just a student of the art academy, later a professor. Hegedušić was impressed with Generalić's work and organized Generalić's first public art exhibition, held in 1931 in the Zagreb Art pavilion. Positive critiques and contacts at the time led to a new era of not only Croatian, but also world art as well.
After World War II, in 1945 he became a member of ULUH (society of Croatian artists). In 1953 he exhibited in Paris, where he lived and painted for a few months. In 1959 he painted The Deer Wedding - his most valuable work, according to followers of the Croatian naïve art world. His home was and Yugoslavian peasant life of that time was his inspiration. His subjects include weddings, farm work, seasonal celebrations and funeral processions, and his rural scenes often included political commentaries on the social injustices of his time. Due to his technique of using oil paints on the reverse of a glass pane rather than conventional canvas, his pictures have a unique reflective quality.
Generalić has a large number of followers, beside his colleagues who form the first generation - Franjo Mraz and Mirko Virius. His second generation followers are Franjo Filipović, Dragan Gaži, Josip Generalić, Ivan Večenaj.
