Tropical wind batters boats in New Bern, NC
(15 Sep 2018) Winds from Tropical Storm Florence battered boats in a marina in New Bern, North Carolina, sinking at least one boat that was tied to a pier.
Items outside the water weren't safe. Several bicycles left on a bicycle rack next to the marina were strewn about as the water and wind battered those, too.

New Years Day Paddle in New Bern
Happy New Year! To welcome in 2011 Ladybug and I traveled down to New Bern with our friend Laura to paddle with the Twin Rivers Paddle Club on their 4th annual New Year's Day Paddle. We joined 16 other kayakers for a short paddle from Jack's Island, past the Grand Marina and Union Point, up the Neuse River to the railroad swing bridge at Dunn Street and back. The weather was beautiful with temperatures in the high 60's, although we could have done without the stiff breeze that kept the water choppy throughout the trip. Just as we approached the bank back at the takeout I unexpectedly and unintentionally took the polar bear plunge! There are rumors abound that I was intentionally distracted or even pushed and I think I will stick with one of those since they sound much better than what actually happened.
I have to throw out a great big thanks to the Twin Rivers Paddle Club for their open invitation to this event. Everyone there welcomed us in with open arms and made for a very enjoyable paddle. Randy was an excellent trip leader and Bill's hot chocolate and coffee was a very warm welcome after the icey plunge.
Sailboats SUNK by Hurricane Florence Storm Surge in New Bern Marinas
Hurricane Florence devastated the sailing community in New Bern, North Carolina with its ten-foot storm surge. You will see the destruction to boats in the historic city. You will see how the storm surge broke up the docks in Bridgepoint Marina and hear from a marina tenants Shawn and Shannon Yale of Sailing Banjo whose boat, SV Banjo, rode out the storm successfully on a Mantus Anchor.
Many boats were overturned in their stands from the rising storm surge in Duck Creek Marina near New Bern, NC. The C-dock near the Trent River Bridge at Bridgepoint Marina was almost completely destroyed at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent Rivers. Flooding from Hurricane Florence.

Life on the River | New Bern, NC
North Carolina’s second oldest city, New Bern brims with historic character and is steeped in heroic stories. A place where two rivers meet like friends chasing out to sea, it lays claim to many of The Old North State’s firsts. Recognized as the first state capital, located in the majestic Tryon Palace, and to its first drink if you will, called “Brad’s Drink,” more popularly known as Pepsi-Cola. A place in love with cultural goods it was home to the first printing press, bookstore, and with reason, its first public academy - which bears the city’s name. It’s also welcomed a few famous guests - from George Washington to Elvis Presley - has on occasion played host to hollywood film crews (most chasing a famous clock), and is the childhood cradle to the noteworthy pen of Nicholas Sparks. With fashionable shops and great restaurants adorning its tree-lined downtown, New Bern is a place to put on top of your must do list.
