Vilnius Travel Guide - 48 Hours in the Capital of Lithuania | 90+ Countries With 3 Kids
Lithuania isn't a country that’s often promoted as a popular tourist destination but more recently is becoming more popular. Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius, on the other hand, is being advertised as the “G-spot of Europe”, despite opposition from the church and central government. The ad describes it as a place that “Nobody knows where it is, but when you find it, it’s amazing”, it’s an undiscovered treasure.
The history of Vilnius is rich and varied with medieval roots that have left striking architecture throughout. Churches and cathedrals in particular are colorful, powerful, and yet splendid. Its Old Town is an UNESCO world heritage site with quaint streets paved in cobblestones and a skyline punctuated with the steeples of Orthodox churches in the main square surrounding the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania.
Perched on a steep hilltop nearby is the Gediminas Castle. The main tower is still standing tall, and climbing to the top is one of the most popular things to do when you come in the city.
However, if you are ever in town we recommend you spend some time wandering the Old Town. Your itinerary should start with the Pilies Street until you make your way outside of it towards the Vilnius Railway Station. Passing through here will leave you with some post-Soviet flavor in addition to tranquil leafy side streets with third wave cafes and streetcars.

Lithuanian cuisine
Lithuanian cuisine features products suited to the cool and moist northern climate of Lithuania: barley, potatoes, rye, beets, greens, berries, and mushrooms are locally grown, and dairy products are one of its specialties. Since it shares its climate and agricultural practices with Northern Europe, Lithuanian cuisine has much in common with its Baltic neighbors and, in general, northern countries. It also shares some traditions with Polish and Ukrainian that date back to the grand duchy times. Also, Hungarian, German, and Georgian cuisines as well as Ashkenazi cuisine. Nevertheless, it has its own distinguishing features, which were formed by a variety of influences during the country's long, difficult and interesting history.
German traditions have had a big influence on Lithuanian cuisine, introducing pork and potato dishes, such as potato pudding and intestines stuffed with mashed potato, as well as the baroque tree cake known as Šakotis. Because of their common heritage, Lithuanians, Poles, and Ashkenazi Jews also share some dishes and beverages. Thus there are similar Lithuanian, Lithuanian Jewish, and Polish versions of dumplings, doughnuts spurgos or, and blynai crepes. The most exotic of all the influences is Eastern cuisine, and the dishes kibinai and čeburekai are popular in Lithuania. Torte Napoleon was introduced during Napoleon's passage through Lithuania in the 19th century.

Lithuania/Vilnius (The Republic of Užupis) Part 5
Welcome to my travelchannel. On my channel you can find almost 1000 films of more than 70 countries.
See the playlist on my youtube channel.Enjoy!
Užupis is a neighborhood in Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, largely located in Vilnius' old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Užupis means the other side of the river in the Lithuanian language and refers to the Vilnia River; the name Vilnius was derived from the Vilnia. The district has been popular with artists for some time, and has been compared to Montmartre in Paris and to Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen, due to its bohemic and laissez-faire atmosphere. On April 1, 1997, the district declared itself an independent republic (The Republic of Užupis). Since the first of November 2014 Jaap van Ark is president of republic Užupis. Užupis is quite small and isolated, being only about 148 acres (0.60 km2) in size; it has around 7,000 inhabitants, nearly 1,000 being artists. On one side it is separated from the Old Town by the Vilnia River, on the second there are steep hills, and on the third side it borders on an industrial area built under soviet rule, which is now to be rebuilt into a fashionable district. The first bridges across the river were built in the 16th century, at which time the district's inhabitants were mostly Jewish. In 1997, the residents of the area declared the Republic of Užupis, along with its own flag, currency, president, cabinet of ministers, a constitution written by Romas Lileikis and Thomas Chepaitis, an anthem, and an army (numbering approximately 11 men). They celebrate this independence annually on Užupis Day, which falls on April 1. Artistic endeavours are the main preoccupation of the Republic; the former President of the Republic of Užupis, Romas Lileikis, is himself a poet, musician, and film director.
Artūras Zuokas, a former mayor of Vilnius, lives in Užupis and frequently takes part in the Republic's events. Užupis does not house internet-cafes, kiosks, big malls, or governmental institutions (except Užupian), and there is no embassy to Lithuania. It is unclear whether the statehood of the Republic, recognized by no government, is intended to be serious, tongue-in-cheek, or a combination of both. The decision to place Užupis Day on April 1 (April Fools' Day) may not be coincidental, emphasizing the importance of humor and non-importance of serious political decisions. The flag of the Republic contains a palm of hand in a white background. Each season the palm emblem has another color: Winter - blue, Spring - green, Summer - yellow, Autumn – red. On April 1, 2002, a statue of an angel blowing a trumpet was unveiled in the main square. The idea was developed from a desire to erect an angel in memory of animator and caricaturist Zenonas Šteinys. It became a symbol of the revival Užupis. The funds were raised by selling miniature copies of the sculpture. The sculptor, Romas Vilčiauskas, is also the creator of the Užupis Mermaid.
Previously, a temporary sculpture of an egg stood in its place. The egg itself became the subject of various anecdotes. After being replaced by the larger statue of Gabriel, the egg was sold at an auction for 10,200 litas and now stands on Pylimo street.Wikipedia

Having Dinner in Lithuania on the coast
Lithuania is one of the three Baltic States situated in Northern Europe. There are several reasons why to visit this charming country. The capital of Lithuania, Vilnius, is definitely worth a visit thanks to beautiful baroque houses, alleyways and colourful churches. You can find hidden terraces, lively pubs, bars and romantic restaurants there. If you would like to taste native cooking, try out cepelinai, which is nicknamed a “zeppelin” and it consists of big potato dumplings stuffed with meat or curd cheese and served with sour cream and bacon. You can also visit designer boutiques or handicraft shops in the capital. The Hill of Crosses in Šiauliai, which is in north-central Lithuania, is famous for the monument made of thousands of crosses left by pilgrims, visitors and newlyweds. Each cross tells its own story of loved ones. The Panerai Forest, which is about 10 km southwest of the capital, is visited by many tourists as there are several monuments and a small museum telling a sad story of tens of thousands of Jews murdered under the trees of the forest. You can reach it from Vilnius by train easily. The southern part of Lithuania is also attractive for tourists as the coastline is a narrow, long-running sandbar with dunes, pines and charming villages. You can take a day trip to the Trakai Historical National Park, which is about 30 km from the capital to see the natural beauty of several interconnected lakes. You can cross a small footbridge to the Gothic Island Castle to learn things about the Lithuanian history. Hiring a pedal boat, you can explore the lakes. If you find this country attractive, you can contact Deborah from Lloyds and Travel at: Deborah@lloydstravel.com. She can help you make the right choice for you and your family.

Lithuanian Heritage Video 2018
A wonderful visit to Lithuania in 2015 with 25 other Americans, on a trip organized by Howard Margol (zl) and Peggy Freedman. We visited Vilnius, then split up to visit ancestral towns and shtetl with guides, and ended our trip in the Kaunas area. Program includes shorter sections such as Rokiskis, Ziezmariai Wooden Synagogue and the Chiune Sugihara house. Thanks to the LitvakSIG for their efforts to digitize genealogical records. Neringa Spit on The Curonian Gulf and Witches Hill, Lithuania
A ferry ride over to Neringa Spit formed over 3,000 years ago from a series of small islands. The bus dropped us off at the beginning of a trail heading through century-old pines. Craftsmen began to carve personalities from legends years ago and there are now more than 80 oak sculptures of devils, witches, pagan gods and goddesses.
My favorite young witch forgot the spell to make rain and instead, the sky poured frogs. Fun, fun, fun...

Poland/Warsaw (Old Town Market) Part 6
Welcome to my travelchannel. On my channel you can find almost 1000 films of more than 70 countries. See the playlist on my youtube channel.Enjoy!
Warsaw-Warszawa/Poland
Warsaw (Polish: Warszawa) is the capital and largest city of Poland. It stands on the Vistula River in east-central Poland, roughly 260 kilometres (160 mi) from the Baltic Sea and 300 kilometres (190 mi) from the Carpathian Mountains. Its population is estimated at 1.740 million residents within a greater metropolitan area of 2.666 million residents, which makes Warsaw the 9th most-populous capital city in the European Union. The city limits cover 516.9 square kilometres (199.6 sq mi), while the metropolitan area covers 6,100.43 square kilometres (2,355.39 sq mi).
In 2012 the Economist Intelligence Unit ranked Warsaw as the 32nd most liveable city in the World. It was also ranked as one of the most liveable cities in Central Europe. Today Warsaw is considered an Alpha– global city, a major international tourist destination and a significant cultural, political and economic hub. Warsaw's economy, by a wide variety of industries, is characterised by FMCG manufacturing, metal processing, steel and electronic manufacturing and food processing. The city is a significant centre of research and development, BPO, ITO, as well as of the Polish media industry. The Warsaw Stock Exchange is one of the largest and most important in Central and Eastern Europe. Frontex, the European Union agency for external border security, has its headquarters in Warsaw. It has been said that Warsaw, together with Frankfurt, London, Paris and Barcelona is one of the cities with the highest number of skyscrapers in the European Union.Warsaw has also been called Eastern Europe’s chic cultural capital with thriving art and club scenes and serious restaurants.
The first historical reference to Warsaw dates back to the year 1313, at a time when Kraków served as the Polish capital city. Due to its central location between the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth's capitals of Kraków and Vilnius, Warsaw became the capital of the Commonwealth and of the Crown of the Kingdom of Poland when King Sigismund III Vasa moved his court from Kraków to Warsaw in 1596. After the Third Partition of Poland in 1795, Warsaw was incorporated into the Kingdom of Prussia. In 1806 during the Napoleonic Wars, the city became the official capital of the Grand Duchy of Warsaw, a puppet state of the First French Empire established by Napoleon Bonaparte. In accordance with the decisions of the Congress of Vienna, the Russian Empire annexed Warsaw in 1815 and it became part of the Congress Kingdom. Only in 1918 did it regain independence from the foreign rule and emerge as a new capital of the independent Republic of Poland. The German invasion in 1939, the massacre of the Jewish population and deportations to concentration camps led to the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto in 1943 and to the major and devastating Warsaw Uprising between August and October 1944. Warsaw gained the title of the Phoenix City because it has survived many wars, conflicts and invasions throughout its long history. Most notably, the city required painstaking rebuilding after the extensive damage it suffered in World War II, which destroyed 85% of its buildings. On 9 November 1940, the city was awarded Poland's highest military decoration for heroism, the Virtuti Militari, during the Siege of Warsaw (1939).
The city is the seat of a Roman Catholic archdiocese (left bank of the Vistula) and diocese (right bank), and possesses various universities, most notably the Polish Academy of Sciences and the University of Warsaw, two opera houses, theatres, museums, libraries and monuments. The historic city-centre of Warsaw with its picturesque Old Town in 1980 was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Other main architectural attractions include the Castle Square with the Royal Castle and the iconic King Sigismund's Column, St. John's Cathedral, Market Square, palaces, churches and mansions all displaying a richness of colour and architectural detail. Buildings represent examples of nearly every European architectural style and historical period. Warsaw provides many examples of architecture from the gothic, renaissance, baroque and neoclassical periods, and around a quarter of the city is filled with luxurious parks and royal gardens.Wikipedia
Little Trip To Lithuania
In November last year Jess H and I surprised Hollie and Becca with a trip to Vilnius, Lithuania. We tried to cram in as much as we could during what little time we had there, including the Museum of Illusions and a Cat Cafe, and had a really good time (besides the whole food poisoning thing but i'm over it)
