Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Colorado, USA 2005
Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a United States National Park located in western Colorado and managed by the National Park Service. There are 3 entrances to the park. The south rim entrance is located 15 miles (24 km) east of Montrose, while the north rim entrance is 11 miles (18 km) south of Crawford and is closed in the winter. The park contains 12 miles (19 km) of the 48-mile (77 km) long canyon of the Gunnison River. The national park itself contains the deepest and most dramatic section of the canyon, but the canyon continues upstream into Curecanti National Recreation Area and downstream into Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area. The canyon's name owes itself to the fact that parts of the gorge only receive 33 minutes of sunlight a day, according to The Black Canyon of the Gunnison. In the book, Vandenbusche states, Several canyons of the American West are longer and some are deeper, but none combines the depth, sheerness, narrowness, darkness, and dread of the Black Canyon.

Our National Park Adventure - Black Canyon of the Gunnison & Curecanti- SPRING
We traveled to Curecanti National Recreation Area to get a glimpse of the winter weather still active in April - despite it being 80* and sunny in our hometown. Curecanti is adjacent to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, which features dramatic rock formations and awe-inspiring views. The stunning view from the observation deck alone is well worth the visit, but the snow-covered trails proved too much for shorts-clad family. Amazing to see frozen- over reservoirs and lakes at Curecanti, and then the rushing water of the Gunnison an hour later. The views are truly spectacular!

Things tend to be a bit quieter here come spring. The snow still falls in the high mountains and backcountry skiing can be at its best. Down valley, fishing and mountain biking are in full swing. It's the best of both worlds...
