Currituck Beach Lighthouse still stands watch
Wrecks of the Huron and Metropolis put the NC Coast on the map. There is a reason it's called the Graveyard of the Atlantic. Heroic acts of bravery by the men and women who lived on the Outer Banks saved many lives. Their legacy is preserved and retold daily at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, the 162-foot, red-brick beacon that has been shining its light here since 1875.
Visible for 21 miles, the beam protects the northern section of the Atlantic Ocean off the North Carolina coast. As many as 1,000 ships have been lost to the water's treacherous currents, shifting shoals and turbulent storms.
Visitors today can climb the 214 steps to the top of the lighthouse for spectacular views of the northern Outer Banks. The uppermost platform allows a 360-degree view of expansive ocean on one side and the tranquil Currituck Sound on the other.
The lighthouse is one of only nine still standing in the U.S. that has an operational, first-order Fresnel lens. The light keepers originally had to hand-crank suspended weights every two and a-half hours to operate the light, carry fuel to the top, and trim the wicks, which were four inches thick.
This may be the best example of a 1870s light station you'll be able to find these days, said Meghan Agresto, Lighthouse Site Manager, history buff and diligent supporter of research and preservation. The sense of place you find here is unique and exceptionally authentic.
The Currituck Beach Lighthouse, located in the Village of Corolla, is operated by the non-profit Outer Banks Conservationists. The grounds are free to visit; children 7 and under can climb the lighthouse for free (there is a fee for ages 8 on up).

We took a fun day trip to Currituck Beach Lighthouse in Corolla North Carolina. Please excuse the horrible wind noise, I decided to leave some of it in to show just how windy it was.
The lighthouse was built in 1873. A duplex house for the keepers was built in 1876.

This shipwreck is thought to be THE oldest one in North Carolina. That would be older than Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge. This wreck was uncovered from the ocean floor during the winter and recently a group has removed it from the beach to preserve it. Currently it sits at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, but will be moved to the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum in Hatteras. It is believed to be from the mid-1600's.

Corolla Wild Horses and Currituck Beach Lighthouse
Corolla Wild Horses - Corolla, NC
Descended from the Spanish Mustangs brought to the Outer Banks by early explorers, the Corolla Wild Horses have roamed across the Currituck Outer Banks for approximately 400 years. These horses are such a significant cultural and historic resource to our area that the Spanish Mustang was designated as the official state horse of North Carolina in 2010.
These wild horses roam freely in Corolla and are most commonly found in the four-wheel-drive areas of the beach. It is illegal to intentionally come within 50 feet of the horses, so that means no petting or feeding, but they can be appreciated from a distance on one of our wild horse tours. We have several tour companies that can get you within picture-taking distance while also giving you a great history lesson about the horses and the area itself.
Currituck Beach Lighthouse - Corolla, NC
Climb the 214 steps to the top of the majestic, red brick lighthouse. First lit on December 1, 1875, the beacon filled the remaining dark spot on the North Carolina coast between Cape Henry and Bodie Island lighthouses.
It is one of the only lighthouses in America that still houses its original first-order Fresnel lens. The light continues to flash today at 20-second intervals, serving as a navigational aid. The beacon, which can be seen for 18 nautical miles, comes on at dusk and ceases at dawn.
The Currituck Beach Lighthouse is a member of Currituck Heritage Park, Historic Corolla and the Historic Albemarle Tour.
The admission cost to climb the lighthouse is $7.00 for anyone 8 years of age or older, youth 7 and under are admitted free of charge with an adult (cash and checks only). Children 12 and younger may climb only if accompanied by an adult. Parents or guardians must sign a waiver for unaccompanied climbers ages 13-18.
