Renovating America’s Oldest Brewery
Take a look at how we are renovating the dairy that helped America’s Oldest Brewery stay in business during Prohibition.
This property is now home to a new tasting room, gift shop and museum, as well as a state of the art waste water treatment facility. The water treatment facility will help preserve our future by managing our brewing process byproducts, providing electricity and heat for America’s Oldest Brewery. Yuengling Brewery Beer Caves: Walking through the historic brewery’s caves
Take a look inside the historic caves, hand-dug in the days before refrigeration, of America's oldest brewery, D.G. Yuengling & Son Inc. in Pottsville, Pa. This year, Yuengling celebrates its 190th anniversary. In 1829, David G. Yuengling arrived from Wurttemberg, Germany and settled in Pottsville, Pa., where he established Eagle Brewery. The Eagle Brewery was later destroyed by fire in 1831, and D.G. Yuengling relocated operations to the current location. The location was chosen because of its close proximity to a mountain that allowed David G. Yuengling to dig a cave for cold storage, aging and fermentation. The caves were finished in 1841 after 10 years of hand digging. You can still see the remnants of brick walls once ordered built by the federal government to block beer production during Prohibition. The caves can be seen during the brewery’s public tours, available year-round. Check for tour dates and hours. The family-owned business has expanded into 22 states, with a brewery in Tampa, Florida as well as the two in Pottsville. (Video by Dan Gleiter/PennLive.com)
Yuengling brewery changing beer labels
It looked like a normal day of production at the D.G. Yuengling & Son brewery in Pottsville on Wednesday, but there was something different about the Pennsylvania beer being packaged on the line.
Yuengling, the oldest brewery in the United States, is getting a new look, and for the first time Wednesday, cans of the brewery's iconic Traditional Lager were being filled and packaged in containers emblazoned with with the beer's new logo.
It's the first time in 30 years that Traditional Lager's logo has changed.
Lager is one of three Yuengling beers that have gotten a facelift, along with Light Lager and Black & Tan. The first batch is bound for Indiana, recently the 20th state to which the family-owned brewery has expanded.
All three beer varieties will be available with their new looks in Pennsylvania in April.
PhillyVoice took a trip to Pottsville, where Yuengling's two Pennsylvania breweries pump out 80,000 cases of beer daily. We saw the new design debut on the cans of the Traditional Lager as it rolled off the production line.
Experience some of what we saw of America's oldest brewery below: from the tunnels below the brewery to its warehouse of freshly-canned beers.

It was opened in Pottsville, Pennsylvania in 1829. The brewery survived prohibition by brewing near beer and several other non-beer products.
This amber lager is only available in 13 states and the District of Columbia. Despite Yuengling's limited ditribution, it is one of the the nation's largest breweries. Traditional Lager is 4.4% ABV and they brew with Cluster and Cascade hops.

Yuengling Bock Beer - The Spit or Swallow Beer Review
Shagdog & Jammer are reviewing Yuengling Bock Beer from America's Oldest Brewery!
Brewed by: Yuengling Brewery Pennsylvania, United States
Pottsville, PA, January 2010 -- Last year, D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc., celebrated their 180th Anniversary by re-introducing a late-winter seasonal classic, Yuengling Bock Beer. Available only in draft, it was the first time a Bock Beer was produced by Yuengling in nearly 40 years. The product was so well received, it will make a triumphant return in both kegs and bottles in January, 2010.
Local taverns and pubs in our distribution area will once again become a destination for customers to enjoy this product on tap, commented Lou Romano, Marketing Manager. Last year, there were many loyal customers looking for Bock in bottles to take home and enjoy with family and friends, but it was not available. There's a great deal of consumer excitement that it's coming back in draft and package.
With a deep amber color, pleasing malt base, and a refreshing hop aroma, Yuengling Bock Beer will be offered in 6-pack (12 oz) bottles, ¼ barrels, and ½ barrels starting January 18, 2010, and will last for approximately 10-12 weeks.
The bottle label and package design is based on actual Yuengling Bock Beer artwork from 1941. It can be found on display in the Yuengling Museum and Gift Shop in Pottsville, PA.

In 1976, during America's Bicentennial, the brewery captured national attention. D.G. Congratulations to Yuengling Brewery!
