DSC Partnerships: 2016 WISE Events
More than 700 female middle school, high school, and college students explored careers in science and engineering and were inspired by successful female role models during the Da Vinci Science Center’s Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) events in Feb. 2016.
The 2016 WISE Academy for female students in grades 5-9 at the Da Vinci Science Center in Allentown, Pa., included special workshop programs and activities presented by female STEM professionals, college faculty members, and college students from the Lehigh Valley area. Presenters included Lauren Kusik, a Meteorologist with WFMZ 69 News in Allentown, Pa.
The 2016 WISE Forum at the Renaissance Allentown Hotel included a networking reception and dinner for female high school and college students and a national panel of highly accomplished female STEM leaders – including the recently-retired Chairman and CEO for the DuPont company; an Aerospace Engineer for the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center; and active and retired executives from IBM, Merck, Daiichi Sankyo, and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
The dinner was followed by a public discussion program during which panelists shared stories about their careers, described the paths they took to realize them, provided advice for young women, and encouraged the students to follow in their footsteps.

The Da Vinci Science Center of Allentown, Pa., expanded its preschool programming in the fall of 2011 with its Preschool Science Series Programs -- multiple-week explorations of topic areas for children ages 3-5 and their parents, grandparents, and relatives. Summer Camps: Movie Science Week One
Boys and girls in grades 1-7 tried their hands at making films from Aug. 8-12 in the Movie Science afternoon Summer Camp session at the Da Vinci Science Center, Allentown, Pa. These movies were produced by the campers and educators during a week in which they discovered the science behind blockbuster visuals, including blue-screen technology and edible glass. Campers also created their own summer snow scenes, constructed prop body parts, and discovered how cartoons are brought to life.

DSC Fun: Ice Cream Wars 6.0
The team from 401! Creative took championship honors at the Da Vinci Science Center's Ice Cream Wars 6.0 competition on Jan. 11, 2014, topping the largest field in the event's history and notching its second championship in three years. A total of nine teams representing Da Vinci Science Center partner companies battled for liquid nitrogen ice cream supremacy as they served batches of their creative flavors to visitors, who voted for their favorites. The team from 401! Creative earned the right to keep the Ice Cream Wars Championship Trophy and hold bragging rights for the following year. The Da Vinci Science Center (DSC) is a science museum and nonprofit organization in Allentown, Pennsylvania that has been a leader in bringing science to life and lives to science, as its mission states, since 1992. The WISE Forum panel included Aprille Joy Ericsson, Ph.D., Aerospace Engineer and Instrument Manager for the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.; Ellen J. Kullman, former Chairman and CEO of DuPont; Angela Bakker Lee, Ph.D., Partner and Vice President for IBM in New York, N.Y.; Lorraine Soisson, Ph.D., Senior Technical Advisor on Malaria Vaccine Development for the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in Washington, D.C.; Patricia Vera, Senior Director of Risk Management for Daiichi Sankyo in Parsippany, N.J.; and Ann Weber, Ph.D., a former President, Lead Optimization Chemistry, for Merck Research Laboratories in Kenilworth, N.J. and Boston, Mass. Carmen Twillie Ambar, JD, President of Cedar Crest College, moderated the panel program.

The Da Vinci Science Center is has been nominated for a regional award for its efforts to support female STEM professionals and encourage girls to take an interest in STEM careers.
The Center’s 2016 Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Forum has been nominated for the 2016 Special Project of the Year Award from the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The winner of this new award will be determined by public online voting. Voting began today and continues until Tuesday, Oct. 18.
The online ballot can be accessed directly by clicking davincisciencecenter.org/vote, and the Da Vinci Science Center seeks to win this award to foster greater awareness of this important initiative, said Ann Marie Surovy, CFRE, the Center’s Director of Development and Community Relations.
