Dakota Pathways: Blackboards and Computers
Dakota Pathways: A History was a 20-part series used by Educator's across South Dakota for use in their classrooms. The 14 minute long segments explore some of the history of South Dakota. Blackboards and Computers is the 11th segment produced in the series.
We have seen many changes in our education system over the last one hundred and forty five years. Expectations, rules, and regulations have changed for both the students and the teachers.
My grandfather, Emil, completed the eighth grade. He wasn't expected to receive a high school diploma. According to my great-grandparents and tradition, his place was in the field. His parents depended on him to help support the family. My grandmother, Clara, also finished the eighth grade. Like my grandfather's parents, her parents felt a high school diploma was unnecessary and inconvenient. They lived in the country and the closest high school was too far to walk. She was expected to help run the house and take care of her brothers and sisters.
One of the conditions my grandparents commented on was the grueling walk to school. They commented how they had to walk miles across open fields and dirt roads to school in what seemed like 5 feet of snow. They also claimed that the walk home felt like it was uphill even though it wasn't. It may have seemed like a long walk because the schools were located across the country side and students were expected to walk two to three miles along the edge of a dirt road or across a grassy field. There were no bike trails or cement sidewalks. A three mile walk is a long distance to travel by today's standards. I find myself driving two blocks to the store to get a gallon of milk.
Expectations and conditions for teachers were also very different if you compare them to today's standards. Below you will find a few of the Dakota Territory Teacher Rules of 1872.
1. Teachers each day will fill lamps, and clean chimneys.
2. Each teacher will bring a bucket of water and a scuttle of coal for the day's session. (scuttle -- deep bucket for carrying coal)
3. Men teachers may take one evening a week for courting purposes, or two evenings a week if they go to church regularly.
4. After ten hours in school, the teacher may spend the remaining time reading the Bible or other good books.
5. Women teachers who marry or engage in unseemly conduct will be dismissed.
6. The teacher who performs his labor faithfully and without fault for five years will be given an increase of twenty-five cents per week in his pay, providing the Board of Education approves.
(Dakota Territorial Museum, Yankton, SD)
The education of students has continually changed over the years. Changes like mainstreaming, consolidation, entrance exams and education initiatives have increased the educational success of both students and teachers. The increased expectations and standards are the driving forces that continue to make our education system great.
Dakota Pathways: Playing Games
Dakota Pathways: A History was a 20-part series used by Educator's across South Dakota for use in their classrooms. The 14 minute long segments explore some of the history of South Dakota. Playing Games is the 14th segment produced in the series.
So far the match has been exhilarating and exhausting. My brother has 5 players left on his team and I have 7 left on my team. One by one we have eliminated each others players during this grueling contest.
I see an opening, so I send one of my players forward. My brother fires back by ordering one of his players back. It was a daring and risky move. It's my turn now -- his player made a costly move. I am able to eliminate two of my brother's teammates by sending one of my players diagonally across the playing field.
It's hot in here, sweat drips off of my brother's face as he assesses the damage. His muscles tighten as the veins become visible in his neck. Our eyes meet, he smiles, but I can tell he is nervous. I feel very confident that the contest will end soon and I will be victorious.
Then I notice his tension seems to reside, his face begins to glow as he makes his next move. The unthinkable has happened. He begins to jump my checkers one by one, to the left and to the right until all of my checkers are gone. Kevin wins and the game is over.
Sports and games come in many forms. Some require extreme feats of strength, while others require large amounts of metal power. But, they all must be enjoyable and unforgettable. We should all play to have fun and to connect with family and friends.

Dakota - United States
Dakota County is the third most populous county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. As of the 2010 census, the population was 398,552. The county seat is Hastings. Dakota County is named after the Dakota Sioux tribal bands who settled in the area. The name is recorded as Dahkotah in the United States Census records until 1851.
Dakota County is included in the Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington, MN-WI Metropolitan Statistical Area, the sixteenth largest metropolitan area in the United States with about 3.3 million residents. The county is bordered by the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers on the north, and the state of Wisconsin on the east.
The county was the site of historical events at Mendota that defined the state's future, including providing materials for the construction of Fort Snelling across the river and the signing of the Treaty of Traverse des Sioux which ceded land from the native Dakota nation for the Minnesota Territory. The county's history was initially tied to the confluence of the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers, both strategically important for United States expansion and as the convergence of the Dakota and Ojibwe nations who regarded the site as sacred. Influence shifted westward during the post-World War II settlement boom when Interstate 35 connected the western half of the county to Minneapolis and Saint Paul and bedroom communities grew. Most work outside the county but like many metro counties, Dakota continues to absorb industry and jobs from the core cities.

Dakota Pathways: Headlines and Bulletins

You may have heard this story before or read about it in a history book at school. It was 8:00pm, Sunday, October 30th 1938. The world as we knew it was coming to an end. Years before the rover landed on its surface, strange activities were observed on the planet Mars. Large spurts of gases were being discharged from its surface. Then the unthinkable happened. Martians landed near Grove Mill, New Jersey. An unstoppable heat ray was terminating local residents. The first human causality was Carl Phillips, a local news reporter. The United States responded with extreme force. The best bombers in existence were deployed and sent to New Jersey. Unbelievably, all of the bombers were destroyed in the altercation. There was no way to stop the takeover; it appeared as though every person on earth would perish in the horrible take-over. One by one the ruthless Martians overtook the citizens of the New Jersey area.
Then it ended as soon as it began. For unknown reasons the Martians started to die. One by one they were all found dead. There was a swift cover-up put in place by the federal government to end the horrible ordeal. Soon the mayhem and uncertainty ended allowing people to slowly forgot the unbelievable mishap.
The events told above never happened; although, many people believed they did. The story The War of the Worlds rewritten by Howard Koch was broadcast on Sunday October 30th, 1938. It was broadcast over radio and caused nation-wide havoc. Later it was estimated that 6,000,000 people listened to the broadcast and 1,200,000 people believed the event was true.
People have an innate trust in the news media. News broadcasters on radio or television and writers of newspaper and magazines articles are very believable. Most of us do not have the time to investigate each newsworthy event in detail, so we have a trust in the story the reporter is telling us. Using multiple sources can make a story more creditable. The panic could have been prevented in 1938 if the people would have turned the dial to another radio station.
We will always rely on the media to keep us connected to the nation and the world. But we must use sound judgment and follow up on a story of interest before we believe everything we see, read or hear. Through print, monologue and video South Dakotans experience events across town and 1000s of miles away.
We experience fantastic events like the release of an endangered species into the wild or when a lost child is found. We also experience horrible events like 911 when Americans were targeted by terrorists or the Tsunami of 2004 that devastated parts of Asia. Unfortunately, staying connected to the world means experiencing the horrible events as well as the happy ones.
