Dalí is one of most famous artists of the 20th century and he changed the world with his fabulous surrealist imagery and flamboyant personality. Figueres is the town where Dali was born and died. The Dali Theatre museum was created by Salvador Dalí himself in his home town. Dali was born a few streets away from the musuem and he passed away living in the museum complex where he is now buried. But the best part of the day was a trip out to the Salvador Dali Theatre and Museum and it was a blast! We was all kinds of weird and amusing art by the eccentric and genius artist. A stop in Figueres back to Collioure was scheduled at the end of the Vermillion Coast walk to visit the famous Theatre Museau Dali. We were both ambivalent about this (knowing nothing about Salvador Dali except weird) but this was an extremely interesting museum even though we didn't understand most of the artwork.
Unique and completely different from any other museum you'll ever visit and the time allowed went by too quickly. I'd definitely put it on a must see list.

The Dalí Theater-Museum (Catalan: Teatre-Museu Dalí, Spanish: Teatro Museo Dalí), is a museum of the artist Salvador Dalí in his home town of Figueres, in Catalonia, Spain.
The museum opened on September 28, 1974, with continuing expansions through the mid-1980s. It houses the single largest and most diverse collection of works by Salvador Dalí, the heart of which was from the artist's own collection. In addition to Dalí paintings from all decades of his career, there are Dalí sculptures, 3-dimensional collages, mechanical devices, a living-room with custom furniture that looks like the face of Mae West when viewed from a certain spot, and other curiosities from Dalí's imagination.
The museum also houses a small selection of works by other artists collected by Dalí, ranging from El Greco to Marcel Duchamp, and a gallery devoted to the work of Dalí's friend and fellow Catalan artist Antoni Pitxot, who became director of the museum after Dalí's death.
Dalí is buried in a crypt in the Teatre-Museu basement.
Some of the most outstanding works on exhibition there are: Port Alguer (1924), The Girl from Figueres (1926), The Spectre of Sex Appeal (1932), Soft Self-Portrait with Fried Bacon (1941), Poetry of America -- The Cosmic Athletes (1943), Galarina (1944-45), Basket of Bread (1945), Napoleon's Nose Transformed into a Pregnant Woman Strolling Her Shadow with Melancholic amongst Original Ruins (1945), Atomic Leda (1949), Apotheosis of the Dollar (1965), Galatea of the Spheres (1952) and Dawn, Noon, Afternoon and Evening (1979).
The Dalí Theatre-Museum has to be seen as a whole, as the great work of Salvador Dalí, for everything in it was conceived and designed by the artist in order to offer visitors a real experience of getting inside his captivating and unique world.
The Dalí Theatre-Museum of Figueres offers a unique experience of being able to observe, live and enjoy the work and thought of a genius. As Dalí himself explained:
It's obvious that other worlds exist, that's certain; but, as I've already said on many other occasions, these other worlds are inside ours, they reside in the earth and precisely at the centre of the dome of the Dalí Museum, which contains the new, unsuspected and hallucinatory world of Surrealism.
