Christmas at the Dangberg Home Ranch
The Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park is one of Carson Valley's first and largest ranches. The ranch was home to German immigrant Heinrich Friedrich Dangberg who founded the site in 1857. Christmas at the Dangberg Home Ranch has been reconstructed with historic artifacts, toys and decorations. Park Interpreter Mark Jensen narrates this video and describes the Ranch's Christmas time exhibit.
A local businessman, rancher and politician, Dangberg started his ranch with just a log cabin. At the time of his death in 1904, he had created a 20,000 acre ranching empire that his sons expanded to 48,000 acres. More than five acres of the ranch are now owned by Douglas County and managed by Nevada State Parks. The county and state are restoring the original buildings, including a main house, a stone cellar, a laundry building, a carriage house, a garage and a bunkhouse. These buildings and original artifacts are on display. The ranch is located on State Route 88 west of Minden, one mile south of the junction between U.S. Hwy. 395 and State Route 88.
Dangberg Ranch - Part 1
In this video, early day settler H.F. Dangberg himself shows us around the house and outbuildings, thanks to a Chautauqua-style performance by Dr. Michael E. Fischer, Director of the Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs. Coming out of costume, Dr. Fischer is joined by Dangberg's great-grandson, Steve Achard, who shares memories of his boyhood growing up here. Included are excerpts from priceless interviews with Dangberg sisters Ruth Achard and Margaret McDonald, conducted in 1984 by Dr. Tom King, Director of the University of Nevada Oral History Program. A rich assortment of historic images selected by photographer Conrad Buedel add yet another level of history. The video returns to 2007 for commentary by Nevada State Park Supervisor Suzanne Sturtevant, who is overseeing the transformation of the Dangberg Historic Home Ranch into Nevada's newest state park.
Dangberg Ranch Part 1 - Traversing That Dirt Road Into Cattle Country
This was my first initial visit to one of Nevada's oldest ranches in the state and most wealthy in all of the Carson Valley. Before I was able to talk with curators I had no idea how much history surrounds the lands you see in this short clip. The ranch itself contains over 40,000 artifacts dating back to the early 1800s its a true symbol of early cattle ranching and pioneering of the American west!

Nevada’s Heavenly Mountain Resort & Carson Valley: My Top Things To Do (2019)
Standing at the top of the mountain at Ski Heavenly Mountain Resort, looking down into the sparkling blue water of Lake Tahoe, I can feel the energy of this place flowing through my body. The jagged mountain meets lake views and juxtaposition of colors — white and blue and green and grey — are nothing short of remarkable. But it is more than just the scenery that is energizing here, there is a buzz to this entire part of the Lake Tahoe region, known as South Lake, that straddles the California and Nevada border.
The resort also hosts a varied mix of beginner, intermediate and advanced terrain on 4,800 acres and nearly 100 runs, which means you can ride all day without getting bored.
Another reason to ski here is to take advantage of the ski and ride school. Instructors will help you with technique, talk mountain trivia and show you the best of the 4,800 acres of terrain.
When you’re done skiing, head into town. I love The Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe, right on the Nevada/California border, not only for their apres ski happy hour, but also for sleeping. The property features stunning Lake Tahoe views, including from its Great Room with its 42-foot-tall glass wall, as well as a blend-into-the-environment design. Everything from the rock to the wood to the limestone walls is authentic, and a lot of attention to detail has gone into the decor.
The family friendly property has 154 rooms and suites and unobstructed lake views with nothing between the lodge and the deep blue water. It also offers a number of dining options, from the Bistro at Edgewood Tahoe where I’m partaking in happy hour, to the impressive fine-dining Edgewood Restaurant.
Beyond Heavenly, there is so much more to do in this region. The adjacent Carson Valley is just a 20 minute drive south from the slopes and is well worth exploring, as each of the four communities that make up the area come with their own historic aspects and recreational opportunities from hiking to horseback riding to hot springs. The area is also home to Dangberg Historic Ranch. The historic park was once a working ranch owned by the Dangberg Land and Livestock Company who worked the land from 1857 to the 1980s when the last family member passed away and the property became a county owned public park. Today Dangberg Historic Ranch hosts more than 40,000 artifacts in the main house museum that once belonged to the Dangbergs.
Other Carson Valley must-sees include the towns of Minden, Gardnerville and Genoa. Genoa is my favorite. The town is on the National Register of Historic Places with a Wild West style main street and is home to a charming old fashioned hotel, a hot springs resort and Nevada’s oldest bar, The Genoa Bar, which I find to be the perfect spot to chat with locals and wrap up my time exploring South Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley in the gorgeous state of Nevada.

About Carson Valley
visitcarsonvalley.org
Make Carson Valley your next Rugged ∙ Relaxed ∙ Reachable retreat destination. With natural beauty, a laid back friendly atmosphere, historic exploration, authentic outdoor recreation, and a wide entertaining Nevada nightlife, Carson Valley will have you coming back for more.
MILES OF OPEN SPACE
Carson Valley rests at a crossroads of sorts. It sits at the transition between the Sierra Nevada range and the Great Basin, the West Coast and the Wild West, the high alpine and the high desert. The valley is guarded on the west by rugged 10,000-foot peaks, the same mountains that cradle Lake Tahoe. Northern Nevada’s most scenic valley is scattered with open space, golf courses, expansive farms and ranches, parks, shops and hotels. Your journey through the Carson Valley stretches from Genoa in the northwest through the towns of Gardnerville and Minden. The trip is paid off with the refreshing reward of Topaz Lake to the south.
GETTING AROUND
As you travel any of the three main roads into Carson Valley (U.S. Highway 395, State Route 88, or U.S. Highway 50), you will enjoy unspoiled views of the valley – surrounded on the east and west by mountains that are sometimes snow-capped year-round. The weather is pleasant and the area enjoys four distinct seasons, with temperatures commonly in the 80's and 90's during the summer and, typically, several inches of snow falling over the course of the winter. Topaz Lake, a 20-minute drive from Gardnerville and 30 minutes from Minden, is known for great fishing, boating, water-skiing, and wake-boarding. The lake (a reservoir) lies east of U.S. Highway 395 on the Nevada-California border. The scenic Pine Nut Mountains form a backdrop to the lake and nearby Topaz Lake Park. The south shore of Lake Tahoe, one of the world’s most famous alpine lakes, is just a 20-minute drive from Carson Valley.
Carson Valley: Rugged. Relaxed. Reachable.
Carson Valley: Rugged. Relaxed. Reachable. Once you see Carson Valley, it's easy to remember what Nevada was like long ago when people came seeking its earthly riches: rugged, friendly, unspoiled. It's a place where the night sky is still lit up with stars instead of neon, where seeing the scenery is more important than making the scene. Here itineraries are shaped by nature, not nagging schedules.

Dangberg Ranch Part 5 - What A Picturesque View It Is
I finished off our first walkthrough of the ranch by enjoying picturesque views of the high sierras that overshadow the 8 remaining historic structures that still stand today. Not much has changed the views are rather the same the only difference is the time period. Cattle still roam these pastures surrounding the ranch just as the buildings have changed very little. One of the oldest barns in the state of NV which you see in the video still stands and is used today. Also on site are many other notable structures some which you can see in this video. With such great views and history it truly is a place where memories can be formed. Just imagine all of this began as a log cabin in 1857. We will return again someday please support the ranch by donating and taking a tour so that it can remain open for many more years to come!
