BARCELONA - Gothic City, Basilica, La Rambla & more! | Truly Remarkable Life
Barcelona started off a little rocky as we were locked out of our VRBO.com apartment rental due to an electrical breaker problem. Fortunately, management expedited the issue and we were into the apartment within an hour and enjoying tapas shortly after.
The next day we enjoyed some excellent sight seeing in the Gothic District where we saw so many beautiful mid-evil buildings, the famous Casa Battlo by Gaudi, and La Basilica de Santa Maria del Mar, the Presidential Palace and so much more. It was truly a remarkable city and we enjoyed every minute.
Walking along La Rambla was quite surreal - knowing it had been such dark things had happened there only months before. However, it was vibrant and alive with locals and tourists. Such a beautiful stretch of boulevard in this amazing city. The surrounding Gothic District was phenomenal to witness. So much history!
We also witnessed some historic moments in Barcelona! Our first full day there was the day that the Spanish government arrested the Catalonian Government for their actions with declaring independence. We saw dozens of police cars scrambling to the city center with sirens blaring. That evening, we were walking to dinner amidst the noise protest where everyone in the city exited their homes and made noise. Check out our video on Political Barcelona - coming soon - in our Europe playlist. We witnessed the protests and flag-wearing Catalonians as they stood for their cause. Regardless of the politics, it was interesting and exhilarating to witness. (Oh, and we were never in danger... the protests were mostly peaceful and aimed at the government... not citizens or tourists.)
Santa Maria del Mar was breathtaking. Having been a fan of the book Pillars of the Earth, Craig found it rather exciting to actually stand in the mid-evil church built so long ago.
The highlight of our trip was La Sagrada Familia... be sure to check out our video for this unbelievable piece of art-chitecture! ;-)
Enjoy! Subscribe and Follow! We appreciate you being here!

Learn more about Barcelona:
Discover the amazing Barcelona Barri Gotic by night with a few astonishing sequence shots. The Barri Gòtic is the oldest part of the Ciutat Vella, Barcelona old town. It literally has its foundations in Roman times as it was built upon the old settlement of Barcino. It's quite easy to see these portions of the Roman wall through this area and for those looking to see more, you can visit the City History museum which takes you below ground to tour the 2,000 year-old foundations. Fully pedestrian, this area is quite popular for visitors to see the history of the city.

History is my second love, after food. And in fact, sometimes I think it might be my first love!
When I moved to Madrid I fell in love with the city's history. While the Spanish capital may not be the oldest city in Europe, it was much older than New Zealand! And it was full of so many wonderful stories of intrigue, had been the home of so many fascinating people, and the centre of so many dramatic events in Spanish history.
So in this walking tour - which is based on the tour I designed when I designed Devour Tours' most popular Tapas, Taverns & History Tour - I take you through the history of Madrid, starting at the beginning and right up to the civil war.
Here are the places we stop:
1. Plaza de Oriente: Location of Madrid's royal palace and the spot where the city was founded!
2. Plaza de Ramales: Where Spain's most famous painter - Diego de Velazquez - may be buried!
3. Calle del Factor: Gorgeous views of the cathedral, the Royal Palace and the Casa del Campo (the old royal hunting grounds, now an enormous public park).
4. Calle de la Almudena: The admittedly not so impressive remains of an old church. But I love the statue of the Curios Neighbour, and also knowing that this was the former location of a mosque.
5. Calle de San Nicolás: Love this little hidden corner with Madrid's oldest standing church from the 12th century (and which potentially is the site of a former mosque
6. Plaza de la Villa: Once the most important square in the city!
7. Calle del Codo: Love this tiny little hidden street - also the location of the famous cookie nuns!
8. Plaza Puerta Cerrada: Right at the top of Calle Cava Baja (tapas heaven!), and where the famous motto of Madrid can be read on the walls - Over water my walls of fire are built.
9. Plaza Mayor: The city's main historic square - site of inquisition trials, bull fights, fires and the Christmas market.
10. Puerta del Sol: The people's square! Home of protests, uprisings and New Year's Eve celebrations!
11. Casa del Abuelo: Amazing garlic prawns, cooked right before your eyes!
12. Plaza Santa Ana: A gorgeous square surrounded by cafes and bars, and with my favourite statue in Madrid of Federico García Lorca.
13. Calle Lope de Vega: The final resting place (we think!) of Spain's most famous author - Miguel de Cervantes (author of Don Quixote)
Enjoy!

Hotel Omm + Gracia Barrio | BARCELONA, SPAIN
Checking In to Hotel Omm and Checking Out Fiestas de Gracia!
This is a travel story for Fathom, an online travel publication. Read the story here:
Giant paellas, infinite tables on the street, rooftop gin tonics and dreamy architecture make of Barcelona the perfect destination.
Come with me as I check into the sassy design Hotel Omm located in Passeig de Gracia and after some pampering and a nice café cortado, we head out for a nice 20 min. walk to check out the “Festa Major de Gracia” a yearly street festival, which is Barcelona’s biggest and most popular neighborhood celebration starting in the middle of August and attracting about one and a half million visitors each year.
There are concerts, cultural activities, dancing and food markets happening simultaneously within the seventeen streets and multiple plazas at all hours of the day and night. The streets are adorned and lit beautifully after dark displaying a variety of themes, endless guirnaldas and handmade objects made by the residents. The Gracia Festivities culminate with the awards given by the local government to the best-decorated street.

Barcelona part 9 Eixample, Gaudi, Sant Pere
We continue with our detailed story about how to spend three days exploring Barcelona: There is much more to see in the downtown center -- visits which could have been made earlier if you don't have the added luxury of a third day. Spreading out the walks this way provides the pleasure of absorbing the sights at a relaxed pace while leaving time for unplanned detours.
Start out once again at Plaça de Catalunya and walk north a few blocks along Passeig de Gracia to appreciate some of the great Modernista buildings along this major boulevard, including another masterpiece by Gaudi, Casa Batlló, with curvaceous lines that seem organic, growing like a plant out of the ground, or considered by some to look like bones. The architecture is also considered a metaphor that portrays the legend of St. George slaying the dragon, evidenced by the building's roof contoured like dragon's skin, and the interior stairway banister shaped like a dragon's spine.
Two blocks further north you will find Gaudi's other famous apartment house, the Casa Mila, also called La Pedrera, which means stone quarry because of the large amount of rock it took for construction. This is a former apartment house now owned by a bank and open to the public as a museum, and is still partly occupied as a private residence.
You are in a modern section of town called Eixample, a 19th century enlargement of Barcelona with many trendy boutiques, sidewalk cares, art galleries and wonderful architecture -- so if this is your style, wander and browse for a while.
Lovers of modern art would enjoy a visit to the MACBA Museum of Contemporary Art, housed in a dramatic, all-white 1995 building designed by Richard Meier, located in the Raval district on the west side of the Rambla, a pleasant five-minute walk from Plaça de Catalunya along the pedestrian Carrer d'Elizabets. When satisfied, plunge again into the Gothic Quarter.
If you would care to veer away from the tourist path for a taste of an ordinary working-class neighborhood with a medieval atmosphere, continue east a few blocks through the district of Sant Pere, traversed by three parallel streets, all named St Pere but ending with different suffixes: mes Alt, Mitja and mes Baix. Narrow, pedestrian alleys interconnect them creating a delightful maze of ancient lanes in which to wander. The neighborhood is named for the former convent monastery of St Pere, an ancient church on the small plaza of St. Pere. The church's dark interior features 10th century Corinthian columns, a 12th century dome and Byzantine barrel vaulting. As you walk along you will see the locals going about their business, shopping, talking, hanging out and skating by. Small grocery shops spill out onto the sidewalk with stands for fresh produce, next to alluring bakeries that will tempt you with their sweet delights. This is a quiet part of town that enjoys a slow pace of life in a world of its own. Exit this district along Basses de St. Pere, which leads to Carrer dels Corders, one of the main thoroughfares through the area.
MADRID SPAIN visit GRAN VIA - A Night WALK
Via (disambiguation).
Gran Vía (literally Great Way) is a street located in central Madrid, Spain. It leads from Calle de Alcalá, close to Plaza de Cibeles, to Plaza de España.
The street, sometimes referred to as the Spanish Broadway, is one of the city's most important shopping areas, with a large number of hotels and large movie theatres; however, in recent years, many of these theatres have been replaced by shopping centres.
The Gran Vía serves as showcase of early 20th-century revival architecture, with architectural styles ranging from Vienna Secession style, Plateresque, Neo-Mudéjar, Art Deco, and others.
