ABOUT “THIS IS THE PLACE HERITAGE PARK”
Step back in time and experience the Salt Lake City, Utah of the 1860's when the pioneers arrived in covered wagons to start a new life. Situated at the end of the Mormon Pioneer Historic Trail, the historic living history village incorporates about 50 period buildings with period docents in each. Barber shop, cabins, hotel, print shop, blacksmith shop, hospital, barn, and drug store are just a few of the buildings open for visitors. The park is very family and children friendly too: train and pony rides, a splash park, gold panning, wool spinning, butter churning, plowing, leather tooling and cart pushing provide great interactive opportunities for visitors. This is a one of a kind fun and educational opportunity for the entire family.

Walking with Chavah downtown Salt Lake City.
In search of the post office: pass by Eagle gate and Utah Republican headquarters.
The Eagle Gate monument is a historical monument—more in the form of an arch than a gate—seventy-six feet across, situated at the intersection of State Street at South Temple, adjacent to Temple Square, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The monument was erected in 1859 and commemorates the entrance to Brigham Young's property at the mouth of City Creek Canyon. It was originally topped by a wooden eagle, refurbished several times and eventually replaced by the current 4,000-pound, bronze eagle, with a wingspan of 20 feet (6.1 m). Carved by Ralph Ramsay,[4] the original wooden eagle is on display at the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum located at 300 North Main Street.
The first Eagle Gate was remodeled and enlarged with new stone piers and wider inverted arches in the early 1890s (with Ralph Ramsay's eagle rebuilt and fortified); designed by Don Carlos Young, an architect son of Brigham Young. Due to the widening of State Street in the early 1960s, the prior monument including Ramsay's eagle was removed and replaced with a much wider and larger third generation Eagle Gate, designed by Salt Lake City architect George Cannon Young. Young was the son of Don Carlos Young and the grandson of Brigham Young. The monument is one of Salt Lake City's most well known pioneer landmarks, and its current design is one of Salt Lake City's best standing examples of Mid-Century Modern design.

Dennis Goodno Tribute Video
Dennis John Goodno, 79, passed away on January 15, 2017 in Los Angeles, California. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Behnaz (Beth) Goodno; his daughters: Jaqueline Elizabeth Drumheller, Elizabeth Mariam Goodno, his stepdaughter Sherri Laleh Shabestari; his granddaughter Madeline Drumheller and stepgrandson Abdur Ramirez; and his sisters Patricia Wagner and Christine Meyer.
Dennis was born on April 15, 1937 in Los Angeles, California. Dennis, an avid history buff, would always say “April 15th is also income tax day, the day the Titanic sank and the day that Lincoln died.”
Among his many talents, Dennis was a naturally gifted engineer from a very young age (he built an electric fence, a glider and his own photo darkroom while still in elementary school). As an Aerospace Engineer in his professional life, Dennis worked on programs of both national and scientific significance, specializing in the integration and testing of space vehicles such as Pioneer 10 (the first man-made object to travel beyond our solar system), Pioneer 11 and Chandra X-Ray Telescope. He was employed by TRW (now Northrop Grumman Space Technology) in Redondo Beach, California for about thirty-eight years, and retired from Northrop Grumman on September 1, 2004 while working on the ABL program at Edwards Air Force Base, California. He also worked with the European Space Agency in Rome, Italy from March 1985 to November 1986.
Prior to working at TRW, Dennis served in the United States Army as an Intercept Technician in Bad Aibling, Germany during the Cold War, after working in instrumentation at Douglas Aircraft in El Segundo, California.
Dennis was a man of many curiosities and interests – known to fully pursue and master his many hobbies. His spirit of exploration inspired a life full of fascinating experiences many people can only dream of; bringing so much joy not only to himself, but to his family and friends.
Dennis was a master photographer, pilot (he held a private pilot license), genealogist and amateur radio operator (K6AGU since 1953). He loved technology (always had the latest and greatest gadgets), history, marine biology, nature, maps, classical music, theatre and film, traveling, boating, motorcycles, bicycling, going for walks, camping and reading books (he was never without his Kindle). But most of all, Dennis was a thoughtful, loving father and husband who was always eager to lend his knowledge and practical know-how to help his family.
Dennis' active mind, curious disposition, and penchant for sharing his knowledge kept him busy after retirement, where he volunteered much of his time in several organizations and clubs throughout the years:
--- President and webmaster of Lancaster Photography Association (LPA)
--- Judge and member of the Southern California Council of Camera Clubs (S4C)
--- Photography student mentor in Antelope Valley and Cal State Dominguez Hills
--- Gifted youth photography teacher in Antelope Valley
--- Member of the Desert Camera Club
--- Webmaster at Omnilore
--- Docent at the Palm Springs Air Museum
--- Docent at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro
--- President of St. George, Utah co-op Artist Gallery
Dennis was admired by all who knew him for his good nature, grounded perspective, nimble jokes and deep knowledge on what seemed to be every subject. Dennis' full and diverse life left behind so many wonderful stories, photographs and memories for his family and friends to enjoy for the rest of their lives. He will be greatly missed and forever cherished by his loved ones.

Parowan Utah Old Rock Church Museum Tour
Parowan Utah Old Rock Church Museum Tour!
- For more step by step genealogy help, check out my blog.
A short time ago I was excited to be able to visit the Parowan Ut. Old Rock Church. It is a goldmine of genealogical information for people who can trace their ancestry to Southern Utah.
It is amazing what the daughters of the Utah Pioneers have done.
They literally have thousands of photographs, stories and artifacts of old pioneer ancestors from all over southern Utah, particularly Parowan Ut.
I have always wanted to tour this great old museum, but never had a chance. Fortunately I was planning on making a trip to southern Utah in November of 2017, but the Old Rock Church Museum is usually closed for general tours in the winter. But fortunately I arranged though the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers (DUP) to give me a private tour.
Betty and a friend of her's from the D.U.P was kind enough to give me and my wife a private tour.
They were a literal dictionary of every family member who ever lived in Parowan Utah.
The Parowan Utah Old Rock Church Museum is a must see trip in your are going through southern Utah. Don't miss out.

We're Going Into A Lava Tube //Snow Canyon State Park//Full-time Traveling Family Of 4
After spending a month resting in air conditioning in Arizona we decided to head North to spend a week in St. George, Utah. We've been here before and loved it then and still love it today.
We have a weeks worth of plans but today we went down inside Lava tubes at Snow Canyon state park, climbed up to see some pioneer names written in axle fluid, and hiked through some narrow canyons. I'd say that's a pretty good first day. : )
We are a family of six (two of them being cats) #traveling #full-time around the United States. We started our #journey in September 2016 in our #fifth-wheel and just recently decided to sell that too. We are currently traveling in our Outback and renting Airbbnbs and cabins along the way.

The Missouri River: Starting Point for the Western Trails, by Travis Boley, Association Manager for the Oregon-California Trails Association - Tuesday, October 27, 2015.
Big Muddy Speakers Series (Kansas City) hosted by
Healthy Rivers Partnership (
Lakeside Nature Center ( and
RiverRelief (
at the Westport Coffeehouse Theater (
For many pioneers headed west, the Missouri River served as the
first leg in their journey to the Western Trails. Travis Boley,,
rethinks the Missouri River in terms of its unique status as a
waterway that doubles as a National Historic Trail.
He is already engaged in creating a 40 mile hiking/biking trail
in the shared historic corridor of the Oregon/California/Santa Fe
Trail from Sugar Creek, Missouri to Gardner, Kansas. It will
intersect with the Katy Trail Extension at 63rd and Blue Ridge
Blvd. in Raytown, Missouri making it possible for hikers and
bikers to easily access the Missouri River at the former Wayne
City Landing near present day Sugar Creek, Missouri.
His grander vision includes opening up wide swaths of the
Missouri River shoreline to allow similar non-motorized access to
our metro area’s riverfront, including trails that connect the
remaining historic sites from the Lewis & Clark Expedition and
the old riverboat landings for the wagon roads. This concept
would fully realize the idea that Congress established in the
1968 National Trails Act, which called for the building of
“retracement” trails in such corridors to forever preserve these
corridors.
