VIETNAM: HANOI: SPRING MARKS FESTIVAL SEASON
Eng/Viet/Nat
The approach of spring marks the beginning of Vietnam's three-month festival season.
Buddhists make pilgrimages to major temples, while cities, towns and provinces celebrate the historical triumphs of Vietnamese heroes.
In recent years, Vietnam's Communist rulers have been using the opportunity to identify the party with Vietnam's nationalist heritage.
In 1789 -- the same year as the beginning of the French revolution -- one of Vietnam's greatest national heroes defeated a Chinese army at Dong Da, in what is now part of Hanoi.
Quang Trung's forces eventually forced the invaders out of northern Vietnam, marking another successful chapter in the country's 2,000 year struggle to maintain its independence from China.
This year, Communist authorities sponsored a major celebration to commemorate Quang Trung's success, part of an effort to link the Communist-led government as the natural successor to Vietnam's traditional national heroes.
The authorities have been encouraging traditional activities and art forms in an effort to keep out or minimize modern influences like karaoke, pornography or movies that might weaken the Communist party's grip on social order.
A Vietnamese human chess game pitted the forces of the yellow queen against the red king's army.
Chess masters supervised the moves, which were called out to the crowd by an itinerant poet who specializes in spontaneous verse about the chess game.

The queen's cannon has rushed to cross the river
The chess group comes from a village outside Hanoi and travels from festival to festival during the spring, making appearances in as many as 20 provinces by the end of the festival season.

It's only human chess, but it's a part of our national culture that's been around for a long time.

Appeals to tradition have become one way of gaining support for Communist conservatives, who fear the party is losing it's grip on power because of recent economic reforms.
With the Eighth Party Congress coming up this summer, all factions are trying to identify themselves with Vietnam's nationalist history.
Peasant dance groups from provinces around Hanoi took a few days off from transplanting the winter rice crop to celebrate Quang Trung's victory.
Even stalwart party members and army veterans paid their respects at Quang Trung's statue, which was erected by the communist authorities only two years ago.
The commemoration of Quang Trung's victory came complete with an old-fashioned fair.
Visitors could take advantage of the season to have a little fun, lay some very unsocialist bets on cockfights or enjoy the dancing without worrying about the implications for the future of the Communist Party.

Quan Thanh Temple in Hanoi, Vietnam
In 1010, The Vietnamese King Ly Thai To was travelling on the Red River, when he saw a golden dragon soar high into the clouds. Inspired, the king built his new capital of Thang Long (Rising Dragon) on the river. The city is now called Hanoi. Ly Thai To also built a Taoist temple, called Quan Thanh Temple, near the northern end of the city, as a sanctuary dedicated to Tran Vu, the guardian spirit of Vietnam. Tran Vu possessed a magical sword that had been given to him by the Jade Emperor, and he had made the serpent and the tortoise into his servants. The serpent symbolizes the ability to slay adversaries, and the tortoise the gift of longevity. A wooden board over one of the doorways in the temple contains this poem: The lake is beautiful in the afternoon sunset. Clouds fly high like cranes, the temple bears shades of autumn. At night, the bells ring. The god protects the country forever.
Here is a reference to an excellent article about the Ly kings and their relation to the local protector spirits of northern Vietnam: Keith Taylor, Authority and Legitimacy in 11th Century Vietnam, in: Southeast Asia in the 9th to 14th Centuries, edited by David G. Marr and A.C. Milner (1986).

Going Green: An Observation Tour for Young Environmentalists from Vietnam
In April 2010, The Asia Foundation, in collaboration with Vietnam Television (VTV) and the Vietnam Institute for Education Sciences, sponsored an observation tour for a delegation of young environmentalists from Vietnam to learn about youth participation in environmental protection in the United States. Their experience was videotaped by VTV and the resulting film will be broadcast throughout Vietnam as part of an effort to raise public awareness of environmental protection. This video highlights the purpose of their visit and features a few of the many people and places they visited on their ten-day trip.
