Livermore Ranch ~ Last of the Great Places - Ft. Davis, Texas
Livermore Ranch is one of the last great places in Texas—a ranch that is intrinsically valuable, with unique geographic features and wildlife resources—private and encompassing among the awe-inspiring mountainscapes of the region—true to the sky island ecosystem. In the heart of the Davis Mountains, encompassing Brooks Mountain and alpine topography, hunters enjoy quality populations of mule deer, elk, aoudad, mountain lions, turkeys, and javelinas. Bird enthusiasts appreciate both scaled and Montezuma quail, as well as prolific annual migratory species. The ranch features exceptional improvements for both friends and family, including a six-bedroom five-and-one-half-bath adobe brick-styled home.

The third day of our West Texas RV trip started awesome, and got more awesome from there.
We used the Davis Mountains State Park as a base camp to explore Fort Davis National Historic Site, the McDonald Observatory, and the Davis Mountains Scenic Loop. We highly recommend all three.
The show-stopper happened at the Davis Mountains State Park. We saw so many bright, colorful birds at the Interpretive center, and got our first lightning shots ever!

Private Kerry Helum of the 8th Texas Company B recreating the scene at Fort Davis National Historic Site 150 years ago this year.
In 1861 the Confederate States of America extended to the Colorado River border of California and Fort Davis, Texas was a necessary presence. In an area the size of West Virginia a loan regiment, Lt. Colonel John Baylor's Second Texas Mounted Rifles defended the Trans-Pecos region east of El Paso. Yet, after the 1862 New Mexico Territory invasion the Second was so depleted they could not hold Fort Davis when the Yankees arrived in July 1862.

Apache Ambush Near Fort Davis Texas in August 1861
In August 1861 near Fort Davis, Texas C.S.A., The elusive Mescalero Apaches led by Chiefs Espejo and Nicolas, had been causing major problems for the Confederate Texas Mounted Rifles. Apache warriors burned wagon trains, attacked stagecoaches, and terrorized anyone who tried to use the road between El Paso and San Antonio that was Fort Davis’s duty to protect. With Texas Confederate authorities having more to worry about due to having Federal forces at their doorstep, (just up the Rio Grande), they made the hopeful decision to attempt to make peace with the Apache.
Early in August, Chief Nicolas learned that the Texan authorities wanted to talk peace. After approaching Fort Davis with proposed peaceful intentions, he was taken to El Paso to meet with a Confederate Texan Peace Commission including Colonel George W. Baylor, brother of the Confederate Governor of Arizona, John R. Baylor, as well as others. They offered an attractive deal, not only peace, but rations, blankets, and gainful employment for Nicolas and his men as paid scouts for the Confederate Texan army. Nicolas “reportedly” had this to say to the offer, ”I am glad I have come, my heart is full of love for my pale-face brothers. We have made a treaty of peace and friendship. When I lie down at night, the treaty will be in my heart, and when I arise in the morning it will still be there. I will be glad I am at peace with my pale-face brothers. I have spoken.
After signing the treaty, the very next day, (during the trip back to Fort Davis), Nicolas couldn’t resist stealing the revolver of one his escorting officers and bailing out of the stagecoach and disappearing into the brush.
Nicolas then wasted little time in breaking the newly signed treaty. He and his warriors promptly stole much of Fort Davis’s livestock and killed the two guards watching over the herd. A small detachment of 14 Mounted Rifles commanded by Lieutenant Reuben E. Mays was sent out in hot pursuit.
When the Confederate Texans caught up with Nicolas and his band later in the day, the Apaches were in their favorite defensive layout. This being warriors on both sides of a narrow wash or canyon where there was plenty of cover and only one road in. It was obviously the “Valley of the shadow of death”, and their Mexican guide could smell an ambush. If we go in there, he said, not one of us will come out alive. Mays listened intently to this warning, and replied distinctly, “well then, we won’t go in. His men were itching for a fight though, ”We aren’t cowards, they protested. Let’s go in there and lick the hell out of them! Against the scouts dire warning and his better judgment, Mays soon relented and gave the order to attack. The Texans advanced into the wash and were met by a hail of fire from Nicolas's over one hundred Apache warriors from all sides.
The battle was over rather quickly. In less than ten minutes Lieutenant Mays and all but one of his men were killed. The sole survivor of this battle was the same Mexican scout who had warned against advancing into the ambush in the first place. As he witnessed the battle winding down, he fled back to Fort Davis with the news of the massacre. Most of the bodies were never found. Another detachment was soon sent to the site to find, hats, boots, and also a few bodies of men who were recognized as troopers under Lieutenant Mays command.
