Beyond Degraves Street is another popular laneway in Melbourne, called CENTRE PLACE. This place is filled with small cafes and restaurants.
It's usually busy during the day when all the office workers come here for lunch.

I went to Melbourne for a few weeks in November to explore the city. During the same time it was also Melbourne Cup, one of the biggest and most popular horse racing events in the world. For the most part I try NOT to focus on tourism, rather I try and introduce things I myself would like to know before arriving in a new city. For example topics like transportation and how to take it, safety of the city, laws relating to alcohol and drugs, knowing what types of shops or supermarkets they have, if they have a chain pharmacy and so on. I classify what I do as more an introducing to lifestyle and culture of a city, rather than just travel and tourism ;)

The street is named after pioneering merchants William and Charles Degraves who built a steam-driven flour mill on the site in 1851. Take a quick detour into its subterranean depths and discover an abundance of off-beat shops and artworks.

Melbourne Degraves Street
Degraves Street is a street in Melbourne, Victoria. It is named after Charles and William Degraves, pioneer merchants who settled in Melbourne from Hobart, Tasmania in 1849. William Degraves (1821–1883) was also a large-scale grazier and a member of Victoria's Legislative Council between 1860 and 1874.
It is a short, narrow laneway, running north from Flinders Street to Flinders Lane in the central business district of Melbourne. The cobbled bluestone alley forms a busy alternative thoroughfare for commuters disembarking from Flinders Street Station toward the shopping areas of The Block on Collins Street and Bourke Street Mall, loosely connecting with Centre Place, a similar lane just across Flinders Lane. The Degraves underpass was built in the 1950s, one of the few public works at the time, to allow pedestrians to get from Flinders Street Station to Degraves street rather than have to walk across busy Flinders Street. Degraves underpass is also home to Platform Artists Group, and frequently presents new works.[1] Vehicles have only restricted access.
The lane features bars, cafes, and restaurants and many of the taller old buildings have been converted into loft style apartments in the 1990s, adding further life to the street.
Redevelopment of the Mutual Store in 2006 has further enhanced the lane with additional shops.
A vista up Degraves laneway is created by Majorca House, an ornate 1930s building dressed in faience.

Each video was filmed by us with hand drawn animations over top that were done frame-by-frame, our original goal was to include animated monsters to add a fantasy aspect but due to time constraints that had to be scraped but if we plan to continue this project outside of our studies the animated monsters will be added in.

On the eve of his intimate concert at InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto's Market Lane Bar, international jazz sensation James Morrison stepped out onto the streets of Melbourne to surprise the unsuspecting public.
After a warm up at InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto, James Morrison and members of the St Leonards College band proceeded to Melbourne's trendy Degraves Street for another flash mob, shocking diners at al fresco cafes on Degreaves. Treated to a jazz musical medley, restaurant patrons and passers by enjoyed their own intimate James Morrison street concert as Degreaves Street filled with curious onlookers trying to work out if what they were seeing could really be true.
Degreaves Street is one of Melbourne's famous historic laneways.
