June 28th Fish of the Delta 1:30 p.m. Come learn about the various species of fish that can be found in Arkansas' Delta, learn about their life cycle, habitat, feeding habits and how to catch some of them. Afterward you can stay and see some of the fish up close at fish feeding time at the aquarium.
July 2nd Geocaching 9:00 a.m. This program will teach you what Geocaching is, about how it works, how to use a GPS to find the hidden cache and how you can have fun across the state looking for them.
July 5th Plant Swap 10:00 a.m. -- Half way through the plant swap season, it's not too late to come join the fun. Bring up to 5 plants of any kind to our group swap and see what you end up going home with. Bring a few of those plants that are multiplying in your beds or that you thin out of your garden for someone else to enjoy, and you get to take home something different while meeting other plant and garden enthusiasts. Outdoor or House Plants, Natives or Exotics, all are welcome.
July 5th Nature Crafts 1:00 p.m. -- while you are out with the kids enjoying the holiday stop in and let them make a Tree cookie necklace that they can take home and wear. All materials are provided. Fun for any age.

Travel down the Arkansas Delta Music Trail, visit the Delta Rivers Nature Center or take the family to Crenshaw Springs Water Park, there's something for everyone in Arkansas's Lower Delta.
This Is Arkansas: Into The Outdoors
The Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center is one of the more special places around the Fort Smith area and a truly splendid place in which to spend a day. A good place for all ages, The Western Arkansas Education Service Cooperative hosted a special day on Tuesday, October the 1st (2013) in which the Fort Smith, Paris, Waldron, and Booneville school districts took part in. This Is Arkansas was very pleased to have been invited to come along to film and produce the event and we strongly suspect that our production crew had just as much fun as any of the students participating did...perhaps even more so in some instances . The educational focus of the day was entitled Into The Outdoors and it was designed to educate both teachers and students alike in regards to the outdoor classroom educational model. Designed and planned by Dr. Curtis Varnell of the Western Arkansas Educational Service Cooperative, the day was funded by a grant from The Humanities Council and turned out to be both a very enjoyable day for all involved and a major success all the way around. Lessons were provided by Dr. Curtis Varnel, Patrick Millard (Waldron School District), Dr. Bret Stone (University of the Ozarks/Clarksville), and Karen Westcamp-Johnson & Chad Lowe (The Janet Huckabee Arkansas River Valley Nature Center). A wide variety of lessons were taught throughout the course of the day that included canoeing & kayaking education, archery education, Newton's Principles (mass, gravity, trajectory...), tree & bird recognition, Native American history & methods, and a guided nature hike -- all of which we've been able to capture and share in this special This Is Arkansas production. Here is an educational model that all classes, schools, and districts need to see and in which all teachers and students should be allowed the joy and benefit of experiencing.

Sorry in advance for the crick in your neck you are about to get....I don't have the software to turn my video 90 degrees (have to remember to only film in landscape mode from now on!!!) Boys received awesome one-on-one instruction on the various hunting and fishing methods while at the Arkansas Nature Center's National Hunting and Fishing Day Celebration. In addition to what is in the video, they also watched knife craftsmen making knives with a portable kiln, hammer and anvil (you can hear the ringing of the anvil during the fly fishing video.)

The Arkansas Delta is one of the six natural regions of the state of Arkansas. Willard B. Gatewood Jr., author of The Arkansas Delta: Land of Paradox, says that rich cotton lands of the Arkansas Delta make that area The Deepest of the Deep South.The region runs along the Mississippi River from Eudora north to Blytheville and as far west as Little Rock. It is part of the Mississippi embayment, itself part of the Mississippi River Alluvial Plain. The flat plain is bisected by Crowley's Ridge, a narrow band of rolling hills rising 250 to 500 feet (76 to 152 m) above the flat delta plains. Several towns and cities have been developed along Crowley's Ridge, including Jonesboro. The region's lower western border follows the Arkansas River just outside Little Rock down through Pine Bluff. There the border shifts to Bayou Bartholomew, stretching south to the Arkansas-Louisiana state line.
While the Arkansas Delta shares many geographic similarities with the Mississippi Delta, it is distinguished by its five unique sub-regions: the St. Francis Basin, Crowley's Ridge, the White River Lowlands, the Grand Prairie and the Arkansas River Lowlands (also called the Delta Lowlands). Much of the region is within the Mississippi lowland forests ecoregion.
The Arkansas Delta includes the entire territories of 15 counties: Arkansas, Chicot, Clay, Craighead, Crittenden, Cross, Desha, Drew, Greene, Lee, Mississippi, Monroe, Phillips, Poinsett, and St. Francis. It also includes portions of another 10 counties: Jackson, Lawrence, Prairie, Randolph, White, Pulaski, Lincoln, Jefferson, Lonoke and Woodruff counties.

The art of falconry dates back about 3000 years, and is still common today. At DeGray Lake Resort State Park, public falconry hunts are incorporated with the eagle outings. Marble Falls -- once a part of Dogpatch USA—is a spring-fed waterfall, providing a year-round flow and is visible from Scenic Byway 7, along with the town of Marble Falls. Standing Rock is what's left of a massive rock formation in the Ouachita National Forest south of Mena. In the Blind, a powerful new documentary that traces the unique traditions and rich culture of waterfowl hunting in Louisiana’s Sportsman’s Paradise and explores the sport’s relevance in a global conservation effort to preserve and restore waterfowl populations, migratory flyways and fragile habitat of this imperiled region.
In the Blind transports audiences across Louisiana from coastal marshes to flooded forests to trace the history of some of the region’s most famous hunting clubs and public land hunting spots, along with the traditions and cuisine that make up this unique, renowned culture. The program features an immersive, “day in the life” of the sport’s most passionate participants, from the hunters and guides, to the card players, storytellers, cooks, decoy carvers, call-makers, wildlife conservationists, land managers and environmental journalists.
For this documentary, LPB partnered with New Orleans-based filmmaker Emma Lou Reid, producer, writer and director of In the Blind. For three years, Reid - a Minnesota native and Louisiana transplant - immersed herself in the culture, politics and landscape of duck hunting. Prior to working on In The Blind, Reid co-produced the National Telly Award winning documentary, Finding Common Ground.
LPB’s President and CEO, Beth Courtney, will interview Reid about the project during the statewide premiere of In the Blind, Thursday, December 12 at 7PM on LPB. The film will also be steaming live at lpb.org/live and on the LPB App (LPB broadcast encore Sunday, December 15 at 6:30PM). Viewers will be offered exclusive opportunities during the LPB broadcast, including a hunting camp excursion, a kayak/birdwatching tour of Bayou Manchac led by Reid, and other unique duck hunting items.
In the Blind will also air on WYES in New Orleans on Wednesday, December 18 at 8PM (encore Saturday, December 21 at 3PM).

Balloon pilots from across the state gather in Harrison once a year during the annual balloon festival to determine who's the best of the best in this high adventure sport. One of the finest fishing and boating destinations in the nation can be found at Bull Shoals Lake and the White River-not to mention camping, mountain biking, a butterfly garden and a wildflower meadow. A unique auto tour in the Ouachita National Forest near Mt. Ida leads to Crystal Vista itself, offering beautiful views and of course, crystals. At Bird Island in the middle of Lake Ouachita, boaters can enjoy a spectacular display of nature during late summer, as tens of thousands of purple martins converge before flying to South America.
