Den Blå Planet - National Aquarium Denmark 19/ - Boa Constrictor
Copenhagen - Kastrup - Denmark, June 2015
Melanie handles the male boa, called Bo, while Jeppe has the largest, the female, called Ulla.
Jeppe explains that the female is always bigger than the male, has a bigger head but a shorter tail than the male, and is a promiscuous bitch, mates with many at the same time, and being exhausted and so hungry afterwards, she can devour one of her suitors! He also explains that this female weighs more than his training 10 kg weights at the gymnasium, i.e. 13 kg. They are fed rats.
Melanie is handling the same male, Bo. Since I photographed both of them, more than half a year earlier, Bo has more than doubled its weight. She complains about having to carry her load for so long. She explains also that the Boa clings to whatever is under it, because it considers it a treetrunk, for its own safety and balance, unless it is a prey. She also explains the colours and patterns are different from individual to individual, which makes it easier to identify each of the boas.
Both Melanie and Jeppe explain that the snakes would stay calm as long as the handlers and the public behave calmly.
Jeppe obliges the cameraman and comes closer to Melanie to show the different sizes, while Melanie shows her usal beautiful smile to close!.
......................
Constrictor means strangler, and that is what this snake does, as it slowly suffocates its prey, squeezing slowly but increasingly each time the prey breathes out. By inhibiting the prey's flow of blood and oxygen, it makes it lose consciousness, suffocates, and dies. They rarely attack humans, unless they wind it around their neck. That is what Melanie and Jeppe were referring to.
The Boa Constrictor, an inhabitant of Central and South America, as large as 4 m, the females being bigger and heavier than the males, up to 50 kg. A good swimmer, it prefers to live along river banks, in the moist of forests, where they can find plenty of prey, namely small mammals, birds, rodents.
They are readily domisticated and breed easily in captivity. Many have them as a pet, feed them mice, rats, rabbits, and chicken. In certain areas they are used to keep rodents in check. Certain people eat their meat, while their skin is used in the shoe and bag industries.

You may think it is a pregnant female! It is not.
The male has a pouch, like the Kenguru, in which the female seahorse lays her eggs, and it is the male's job to hatch them! A fair distribution of the work load, you may say.
However, the female is a promixuous nympho, and she is constantly mating with other males, and leaves them her eggs to hatch. Not very faithful, I suggest!
The seahorse is related to the seadragons. While the leafy seadragon drifts with the current, and is often cast to the shore, the seahorse coils its tail to the seagrasses and plants of the reefs in shallow waters. However, many of them die exhausted during serious storms.
An inhabitant of the shores of Australia and New Zealand, it can measure up to 35 cm, and feeds on small crustaceans that are abundant around the seagrasses.
In China, they are used as herbs and medecin, as well as parts of jewelery. Extensive fishing is putting their survival in danger.
If interested, you may want to watch those leafy sea dragons, here:

After several more or less successful attempts, many of which worthy of a presentation, at last, succeeded in finding the best, un-edited, take I am very proud to present here, having the Spotted Eagle Ray, the Round Ribbontail Ray, the Leopard Whip Ray, the Javanese Cownose Ray, the Blacktip Reef Shark, the Zebra-shark, the Glant Guitarfish, the Great Barracuda, the Scalloped Hammerheadssharks, and others, sometimes quietly, sometimes dramatically, sometimes threatening, sometimes just curious, swimming towards me, in front of me, behind me, above my head and under my feet.
An acrobatic and exhilarating experience, believe you me! Filmed with firm hands, a sometimes backward arched backbone, and a heartbeat racing like mad!
Take a look, and be the judge!
And eeuuuuuuh have a nice weekend!
