Deng Xiaoping Portrait Square, Lychee Park & Kingkey 100
Right opposite Shenzhen's superannuated Grand Theatre (Grand Theatre station, Line 1, Luobao line, green, Dà Jùyuàn Zhàn/大剧院站) is one of the bigger billboard's in town showing Deng Xiaoping, the father of Shenzhen. It's a lively square, especially at night when women start to dance, people sing on the streets and kids doing their inline skate tricks. Around there are a couple of interesting things to explore. You have the lush green Lychee Park (LiZhi GongYuan/荔枝公园) where you can take a break from the busy streets of Shenzhen. There is the (currently) heighest building in Shenzhen (12th in the world), Kingkey 100, where you can sip at the 100th floor on your cocktail while enjoying a 360 degree view over Shenzhen and Hong Kong. Right beside we have KKMall, Shenzhen Book Mall and MixC shopping mall as well as Diwang and it's observation floor with a model reconstruction of Deng Xiaoping's 1984 meeting with British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. And let's not forget those hundreds of restaurants hidden somewhere in the villages and residential areas behind the shiny skyscrapers along Shennan Dadao.

CHINA: BEIJING: STATUE IS TO BE ERECTED OF DENG XIAOPING
Mandarin/Nat
Unlike his predecessor Mao Zedong, the late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping rejected personality cults.
But at least one monument to Deng will be erected in the wake of his death, in Shenzhen, the city that his policies of economic reform helped to build.
Deng's statue is an incongruous mix of styles, placing a naturalistic face copied from photographs of him as an old man atop a body in the stiffly heroic style of the Mao era.
But unlike other Communist leaders, Deng cultivated a folksy image.
A three-time victim of political purges, he discouraged the kind of personality cult enjoyed by his predecessor Mao Tse-tung, who filled China with hundreds of statues of himself.
The sculptors insist they are not breaking with Deng's opposition to glorifying Chinese leaders.
Deng's actual diminutive size now stands six meters (20 feet) tall in this clay likeness, which will be over-layed with bronze prior to its unveiling.
The sculptors say they want to capture the spirit of Deng as a man of the people.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
What we would like to see is a man who is close to us, an authentic individual and live human whose heart is connected to those of ordinary people. Therefore, although this is a commemorative sculpture, it is different from ordinary monuments.
SUPER CAPTION: Bai Lansheng, Sculptor
The work is intended for Shenzhen, the special economic zone that borders Hong Kong that has become a symbol of the prosperity brought by Deng's economic reforms.
The four-member team is to complete the work and have it cast in
bronze by March 25, when it will be exhibited temporarily in Shanghai.
It is due in Shenzhen in June, in time for the return of neighbouring Hong Kong from British to Chinese rule.
Shenzhen is one of the few places in China to display a large public photograph of Deng, commemorating his 1992 visit to the city.

CHINA: SHENZHEN: FINAL RESPECTS PAID TO DENG XIAOPING
Natural Sound
Thousands of people in Shenzhen, Southern China's special economic zone, gathered Tuesday to pay their final respects to Deng Xiaoping.
Deng had a dramatic impact on their lives in this part of the country and the people here paid homage to the man who transformed this one-time fishing village into a burgeoning economic powerhouse.
Deng's picture dominates the town centre of Shenzhen, in Southern China.
The memorial park became the focus for the city's grief, Tuesday, as people paid tribute to their deceased leader, filing past to lay flowers.
This microcosm of capitalism, 1500 miles south of Beijing, is the crucible of Deng's economic reforms.
Its people enjoy a standard of living higher than many other parts of China.
And many here felt Deng's loss deeply.
The very old and the very young stood side by side - the children too young to know what Deng had done to transform this city in the past twenty years.
The elderly were keen to pay their last respects to a leader idolised by some.
The 92-year-old grandfather of the Chinese nation - might even have approved of the salesmen who stuck firm to their prices for Deng memorabilia.
One woman was clearly angered when she was asked to spend the equivalent of just over one American dollar to buy a magazine.
In some areas it was business as usual.
Shenzhen's stock market continued trading throughout the funeral - though many traders gathered round television screens to watch the images beamed in from Beijing.
The children of Shenzhen are schooled to believe that Deng and his economic strategy will carry them forward into the next century.
Whether Jiang Zemin -Deng's anointed heir- is the man who will lead them there is, however, in some doubt.
As the flags flew at half-mast to remember Deng; the first apparent cracks of division were already appearing among China's political leadership and military commanders.
Analysts are split on the issue, whether Deng can rest in peace in the knowledge that his economic plans will continue without disruption.

When Deng Xiaoping created a special economic zone in Shenzhen in 1979, the Chinese paramount leader probably didn't expect the area to become a centre for luxury golf clubs and tattoo artists, but that is one of the results of the phenomenal development in the southern city. The FT's Demetri Sevastopulo looks beyond the factories and skyscrapers of China's youngest metropolis.
