Lori Stokes featured on VVH-TV's American Dreams Show
Lori Stokes, Award winning news anchor for WABC-TV News was featured on VVH-TV's American Dreams Show with
Ingrid Lemme, host. Taped on December 6th, 2008 at Gurney's Inn, Montauk, New York.
As anchor of Eyewitness News This Morning and Eyewitness News at Noon, Lori Stokes has been an unflinching guide through everything from the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 to the Northeastern Blackout of August 14, 2003. Along the way, Stokes has picked up Emmy and AP Awards for her reporting.
Prior to MSNBC/NBC Lori worked for ABC affiliate WJLA-TV in Washington, DC as evening anchor at six and 11 o'clock from 1992- 1996. While in the nation's capital, she also launched WJLA's Good Morning Washington.
She has received numerous awards for her reporting on social issues, in particular stories affecting women and children. As a street reporter from 1991-1992 for WBFF-TV in Baltimore, she received an Emmy Award for her in-depth coverage of children caught in the crossfire of local violence.
Her undercover journalistic work as a homeless person on the streets of Baltimore earned her an Associated Press Award. More recently, she received a 2006 Emmy nomination for a police chase on which she reported live in 2005.
Stokes is also the recipient of a George P. Foster Peabody Award for her September 11, 2001 coverage of the World Trade Center attack. On a national level, Stokes received the 2003 Congressional Black Caucus Celebration of Leadership Award for her civic service and her status as a role model.
This year, Stokes was named a Woman of Influence by Commerce magazine, placing her among the ranks of best-selling author Mary Higgins-Clark, philanthropist Deirdre Imus, and racecar driver Danica Patrick. Additionally, she is aiding the founding of a new charity, Supplies for Success, which aims to furnish underprivileged children with the tools they need, both tangible and intangible, to excel academically.
Stokes was just recognized in New York City by the Mayor's Office to Combat Domestic Violence for her body of work and her extensive community outreach. It may be difficult today to remember just how far we have come in 30 short years, Stokes said of the cause, There were no emergency shelters for battered women and their children; there was no law against spousal rape; and, yes, it was against the law for an abused woman fleeing her abuser to take her children with her. In these 30 years, much has been accomplished and the Center Against Domestic Violence has led the way.
She is also now a proud member of Jack and Jill of America, an organization founded in 1938 under the leadership of Marion Stubbs Thomas with the idea of bringing together children in a social and cultural environment. The group primarily serves Black children from the ages of two to 19.
Stokes is one of the millions of people who live with potentially deadly food allergies and is passionately involved with the Food Allergy Initiative. She serves as a member of the board of trustees at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center Foundation, Bergen Performing Arts Center and St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Patterson, New Jersey.
Although born in Cleveland, Ohio, Stokes grew up Washington, D.C. She is daughter of former United States Congressman Louis Stokes and the niece of Carl Stokes, who made history as the first African American mayor of a major city, Cleveland. Stokes was crowned Miss Azalea in 1983, representing the NATO Alliance; she was the first African American to ever hold the title.
Stokes is an alumna of Howard University and Ohio State University. She resides in New Jersey with her children.

LYRICS
How can I decide what's right?
When you're clouding up my mind
I can't win your losing fight all the time
How can I ever own what's mine
When you're always taking sides
But you won't take away my pride
No not this time
Not this time
How did we get here?
Well I used to know you so well
How did we get here?
Well I think I know
The truth is hiding in your eyes
And its hanging on your tongue
Just boiling in my blood
But you think that I can't see
What kind of man that you are
If you're a man at all
Well I will figure this one out
On my own
I'm screaming, I love you so
On my own
My thoughts you can't decode
How did we get here?
Well I used to know you so well, yeah
How did we get here?
Well I think I know
Do you see what we've done?
We've gone and made such fools of ourselves
Do you see what we've done?
We've gone and made such fools of ourselves
Yeah
How did we get here?
Well I used to know you so well, yeah yeah
How did we get here?
Well I used to know you so well
I think I know
I think I know
Ooh, there is something
I see in you
It might kill me
I want it to be true

Gateway Arch, St Louis, MO
I was fortunate in that at the time the St. Louis Arch was being built I was engaged to a young man whose sister lived in St. Louis and we visited with her often. We were there on February 12, 1963 when the bulldozers first cranked up and broke ground, we saw the final piece slip into place on October 28, 1965, and watched as the Arch grew from week to week. In the end, we attended the opening dedication on May 25, 1968. Exciting stuff, all that.
The structure was built as a monument to Thomas Jefferson and all those pioneers for who St. Louis was the Gateway to the West. Jefferson bought the Louisiana Territory in the Louisiana Purchase and made Westward Expansion possible.
At 630 feet, 63 stories, 192 meters, or 7650 inches tall it is, in fact, as tall as are the legs apart. The legs are 54 feet wide at their base and 17 feet wide at the top. 142 stainless steel sections were used to build the Arch and it's foundations extend about 60 feet into the earth.
Made of steel and concrete, the structure weighs 17,246 tons. It has a double wall construction with 1/4 stainless steel on the outside and 3/8 structural steel inside. The distance between the wall or skins at the surface is 3 feet, narrowing to less than 1 foot at the top and there is a layer of concrete between the skins approximately half way up the legs of the Gateway Arch. The steel was provided by the Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel Company.
Over 500 tons of pressure was used to jack the legs of the Arch apart for the last four-foot piece to be inserted at the top. As a result, the windows are 7 x 27 - 16 windows on each side of the observation deck. Larger windows would not be able to withstand that kind of pressure. The viewing area at the top can hold up to 160 people.
The Arch cost was $13,420,168. The grand total spent for the total area development is $51,300,373. This figure consists of a large amount of non-federal funds and includes the $1,977,750 for the transportation system paid for by the Bi-State Development Agency (Metro Transit).
There is a connected system of 'trams' or 'pods', or 'cars' that carry visitors to the observation area. They travel 340 feet per minute, approximately 3.86 miles per hour and are constructed to 'click' the car to keep passengers absolutely upright during the trip. I didn't like the jolt or sound of the click at all but then I don't care for heights anyway and although one can't see the outside from the car I knew what I was going to face and was very nervous.
The Arch is designed to sway as much as 18 inches, and can withstand an earthquake, however under normal conditions the Arch does not sway. It takes a 50-mile an hour wind to move the top 1.5 inches each side of center.
Jefferson National Expansion Memorial was envisioned, from the time it was proposed by civic leaders in the 1930s, as being a commemorative site that would interpret St. Louis' role in the westward expansion of the United States. Over the years several different schemes and proposals were put forward to accomplish this goal, all of which utilized the entire landscape of a large, rectangular area roughly corresponding with the original site of the French colonial town of St. Louis. Eero Saarinen's vision of the site, which was judged the winner of the 1947-1948 architectural competition, also encompassed the entire area. All 172 entrants had to create a landscape design as well as 'a large, central feature', The centerpiece of Saarinen's design, the magnificent Gateway Arch, so enthralled the competition judges (and all later viewers) that it not only dominated the site but made people forget that a specific landscape was also designed to correspond with and enhance the Arch. Jefferson National Expansion Memorial is the entire site, and not just the Gateway Arch.
Sixty-two acres of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987. Although most people realize that the Gateway Arch stands with the Statue of Liberty, the Golden Gate Bridge, Mt. Rushmore, and the Washington Monument as universally recognizable forms and symbols of national identity, few are aware of the significance of the landscape which surrounds it. Architect Eero Saarinen and landscape architect Dan Kiley planned a landscape for the Arch which complements, enhances and echoes the graceful lines of the structure, while not calling attention to itself. The grounds themselves are carefully landscaped with ponds, trees, and walkways that again reflect the gentle curve of the Arch. Similar curves are repeated in the tunnel entrances for the railroad tracks that cut through the property. The scale, impact, and design of the grounds constitute an essential mooring for the world-famous Arch and merge the Arch and its grounds, with one reflecting the other.
Thank you for watching my slide show. I do not hold copyright on the pictures or music.
Be well!
