Vatican City State Inside Rome, Italy 360° Spin View
While on a recent cruise on Royal Caribbean's Vision of the Seas, had a stop in Civitavecchia. A port city (somewhat!) near Rome. Civitavecchia is roughly 51 Miles (82 Kilometers), and an hour and a half (or more!) drive each way!
While in Rome, I took a small detour to Vatican City, a country all in itself! Vatican City, officially Vatican City State, is an independent city-state wholly enclaved within Rome, Italy. Established with the Lateran Treaty (1929), it is distinct from, yet under full ownership, exclusive dominion, and sovereign authority and jurisdiction of the Holy See. With an area of 44 hectares (110 acres), and a population of about 1,000, it is the smallest sovereign state in the world by both area and population.
Vatican City, a city-state surrounded by Rome, Italy, is the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. It's home to the Pope and a trove of iconic art and architecture. Its Vatican Museums house ancient Roman sculptures such as the famed “Laocoön and His Sons” as well as Renaissance frescoes in the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel, famous for Michelangelo’s ceiling.

CAR RENTAL SICILY, ITALY - We’re on Another Road Trip!
What’s the best way to see Sicily? Hire a car!
We did a lot of research before going to Italy on how to get around, what is the cheapest mode of transportation and how good the public transport networks are. We found that travelling long distances (for example Rome to Palermo) the cheapest and easiest way is to get a coach. However, the best part about getting out of major cities is seeing the countryside and being able to stop in the little towns along the way. If you want to do this in Sicily then you really do need to hire a car.
Renting a car in Italy is very affordable. We hired a Fiat 500 for €17 a day, and that wasn’t even with a deal. It was a last minute straight from Hertz price, so we’re sure that you can get an even better price than that. Fuel can get quite expensive though, we were paying around €1.60 per litre, so just keep that in mind when you plan your itinerary.
What are the roads like in Italy?….Ah…..they vary. The motorways are excellent (as you should expect), main roads are normally decent (but can also be absolutely terrible), and smaller roads in and around the towns can get pretty rough (or just be completely collapsed, flooded and blocked off without a detour warning). Because of the pot luck situation with roads its a good idea to always have plenty of fuel and be prepared for reaching your destination later than expected.
While in Sicily we have booked several Airbnbs. Similar to Greece this was the cheapest accommodation option. There aren’t hostels outside of Palermo and Catania, hotels are limited and can be quite expensive as well. We found Airbnbs for around $35-$50 AUD per night for a house to ourselves. Staying in an Airbnb is another good way to save money because you can make your own food (providing you have a kitchen). Eating out in Sicily isn’t what we’d call expensive, but it’s generally above our normal budget. So we ate a simple breakfast at home, usually ate lunch out and then cooked at home. We also found a lot of the food available in Italy is not exactly healthy, so having dinner at home was our chance to have some veggies!
Something that took us by surprise and was definitely a spanner in the works - everything shuts down in the afternoon! Between 12pm and 5pm (depending on where you are, some places its 1pm to 4pm) all the shops and restaurants close down. Even some super markets close during this time. The only places we noticed were open are gelato and coffee bars. But a bonus is the roads are almost completely empty during this time and street parking is FREE! So we ended up going to towns during this time, parked for free and wandered around the area by foot in peace and quiet.

Rome Tour Colosseum Forum & More
Get ancient Roman coins here: or see the rest of tour: Next part: Took tour with professional tour guide and published professor who lives in Rome and knows it inside out. This intimate experience shows Rome as it really is meant to be experienced with detours into hidden gems. He explained how the city went from the one of ancient times and how it was built up over time. The tour starts at the Colosseum and takes you through a detour to a preserved Roman buildings turned into a church. After which point there is a visit to the Roman forum, along which includes the famous Senate house where Julius Caesar got assassinated on the Ides of March 44 B.C. and the final resting place of his ashes in the forum. There was a visit the home of the vestal Virgins. Then of course we go to higher ground and see the palace that the Caesars lived in at Rome. Overall a breathtaking experience into the ancient past as cannot be experienced through just reading. It was a pleasure visiting these sites because I have been fascinated with ancient coins all of these years, and now I was able to have an even stronger understanding and appreciation of the subject.

Rome Italy | By Aloha Robert
Rome, the “eternal city”, is so called because it is a place of great beauty, contrast and life. Rome is an ecletic city: the religious world centre of Catholic Church, the fabulous ruins of the centre of the Roman Empire, and modern, bustling Rome. All three seem incongruous, yet they live inside and beside each other with great ease. You will soon realise Rome was build to rule and dominate the world. Everything is on a massive scale, solid and “eternal”.
The center of Rome is compact, and wandering the ruins on foot is a great way to see the city. Street life is vibrant and constant. The architectural design is consuming, and close proximity of ancient sights make for a comfortable and convenient walk. For instance, the Colosseum is approximately one-and-a-half miles from the Spanish steps. One route travels by the Forum, Piazza Venezia, and several churches, passing through charming neighborhoods. A longer, more scenic route weaves from the Colosseum to the Vatican. Most major monuments are west of the train station. The Pantheon and Trevi Fountain are a short detour away. The Palatine Hill and the Forum are the center of ancient Rome. Via del Corso runs north from the Forum to Piazza del Popola, and Trevi Fountain is to the east. The Vatican is northwest of the Forum, across the Tiber River. Small patches of central Rome have sidewalks and streets closed to cars for use by cyclists and scooters.
