Devils Courthouse, Black Balsam Knob, and Sam Knob - Pisgah National Forest, NC
One of the most scenic day hikes I've been on in years to notable summits in Pisgah National Forest tucked between the Shining Rock and Middle Prong Wilderness Areas. I started on the Mountains-to-Sea Trail east from NC 215 towards Devils Courthouse. The views from the famous cliffs were just a warm-up for the rest of the day. Next were a series of south-facing cliffs on Chestnut and Silvermine Balds. Then I continued on the Art Loeb Trail to the incredible views from the grassy balds around Black Balsam Knob
I then went down to the Black Balsam Knob Rd parking lot to pick up the Sam Knob Summit Trail. Sam Knob is centrally located between the two wilderness areas and has awesome views from its two exposed summits. The loop is completed by taking the scenic Flat Laurel Creek Trail through a hanging valley. The trail follows the namesake creek by campsites and waterfalls with Sam Knob towering above. Just before you finish you'll also pass right by the base of Wildcat Falls. Easily one of the most scenic hikes in the state.
Hike was 12.1 miles with 2,205 feet elevation gain in 7 hours and 20 minutes.

'Devil's' Courthouse - Blue Ridge Parkway
The mountain named ‘Devil’s’ Courthouse is located at the Western edge of the Pisgah National Forest within the Nantahala National Forest at mile marker 422 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s elevation is at 5,720 feet. On clear days four states can be seen from it’s panoramic view. Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and of course North Carolina. Cherokee lore tells of a giant living in cave near the area known as Jutaculla or Tsul’kalu. The name itself more than likely comes from the sinister aspect of the rock formation or because legend holds that the devil held court in the cave that lies beneath the rock. Cherokee lore names this place as he Jutaculla’s private dancing chamber and dwelling place of the slant eyed giant.
The high altitude is home to many protected plants and animals including the peregrine falcon. The trail itself is lined with moss, fern, rhododendron, and balsam fir. The grounds outside the trail at this location are off limits because of the rarity of the plants. (This is one trail I do recommend staying on the trails for this reason and because beyond the wall is very steep and dangerous) The trail itself is just under a mile round trip with a climb in altitude of 258 feet it is steep but the trail is considered to be a ‘moderate’ hike.
15-20min hike depending on fitness level..

Pisgah National Forest - North Carolina
North Carolina's Pisgah National Forest covers a vast area of 512,758 acres. The forest was created in 1916 after the purchase of 86,700 acres form the estate of George Vanderbilt II who built the famous Biltmore Estate near Asheville. The Blue Ridge Parkway runs through much of the Forest and is a popular tourist destination especially in the fall when the mountains are ablaze with color. • Hoedown by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (

Black Balsam Knob on the Art Loeb Trail - Pisgah National Forest (North Carolina)
This is a stunning, short day hike in the Pisgah National forest. With the summit at over 6200ft, this hike offers breathtaking views. The trail remains well-above tree line for over 3 miles. The Art Loeb Trail is one of North Carolina's most strenuous trails, while offering some of the most scenic views. This is a great short hike to be able to experience some of those views without too much effort or planning!

Stunning waterfalls and a distinctive landscape make Graveyard Fields one of the most popular hiking areas in the North Carolina mountains. Graveyard Fields is located about an hour south of Asheville on the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Why the funeral name? One theory holds that many years ago a tremendous windstorm uprooted the spruce forest, leaving behind stumps that gave the area the appearance of a graveyard. Another speculation is that logging in the early 20th century left tree stumps resembling gravestones.
Graveyard Fields experienced catastrophic fires in the last century, once in 1925 and again in the early 1940s. These fires swept through the area, destroying the stumps and scorching the soil enough to render it sterile.
Wildflowers Enchant Hikers in this Blue Ridge Parkway Wilderness
Today, few signs of this fiery heritage are visible, a testament to nature's ability to heal itself and to create beauty from devastation. Populous plants include mountain laurel and rhododendron, as well as many wildflowers, such as bluets, galax, asters, and honeysuckle. In summer and fall, hikers can enjoy blackberries, gooseberries, and blueberries scattered throughout Graveyard Fields. The berries also attract a variety of wildlife, including a large number of white-tailed deer.
