Devils Tower (also known as Bear Lodge Butte) is a butte, possibly laccolithic, composed of igneous rock in the Bear Lodge Ranger District of the Black Hills, near Hulett and Sundance in Crook County, northeastern Wyoming, above the Belle Fourche River. It rises 1,267 feet (386 m) above the Belle Fourche River, standing 867 feet (265 m) from summit to base. The summit is 5,112 feet (1,559 m) above sea level.
Devils Tower was the first United States National Monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt. The monument's boundary encloses an area of 1,347 acres (545 ha).
In recent years, about 1% of the monument's 400,000 annual visitors climbed Devils Tower, mostly using traditional climbing techniques.
The 1977 movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind used the formation as a plot element and as the location of its climactic scenes. Its release was the cause of a large increase in visitors and climbers to the monument.
Similarly, the 2011 movie Paul, used the formation at the film's climax as an homage to Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Hiking Around Devils Tower National Monument & Exploring Gillette Wyoming
On this Airstream Life vLog, we take a 2-hour drive from Buffalo to Devils Tower National Monument. This is the 1st National Monument in the USA. It is impressive to see in person. Why is it called Devi's Tower? It was a misinterpretation of the Native American name which was Bear's Tower (they heard Bad God's Tower). The legend has it two girls were running away from 2 giant bears. They got on top of a rock and prayed to the Creator to help them. The rock then raised up into the air with the two bears clawing at it trying to get up. This created the tower!
After seeing the tower and the prairie dog colony we head back to Gillette Wyoming where we have some delicious Mexican food for lunch and check out the town.

Devils Tower National Monument - Wyoming
PLEASE WATCH in 720p HD or higher! From 1:00 to 1:30 mark on this video it is blurry for some reason? It is not like this in my original and I uploaded this video twice thinking something may have happened the first time around. No clue as to why this part of the video is like this?? I haven't had that problem before with any of my videos.
We stopped at Devils Tower National Monument just before heading into Yellowstone National Park. I really didn't know what to expect from only seeing pictures of this unique place. We hiked the 1.3-miles around the base of the Tower which was really neat seeing all sides of it and how it changes perspective. At one point there was a Park Ranger telling a story of a man landing on top of Devils Tower after jumping from an Airplane. You can hear her briefly telling the story later in the video.. There is also one area of the Tower that skilled climbers can climb. I'm not sure how high they can climb but I did film a guy climbing up the side about half way up.

Of course the Devils Tower was made highly popular from one of my favorite movies Close Encounters of the Third Kind, starring Richard Dreyfuss.

The Origin and Geology of Devils National Monument
How did Devils Tower form? That's a great question and the answers are in the rocks.
Devils Tower National Monument - Wyoming
Come along as we explore Devils Tower and share information about how it got its name and how it was formed.
Today we leave our campsite in the Black Hills National Forest and head to Wyoming.
Devils Tower height: 1,267' (386 meters)
Devils Tower elevation: 5,112' (1,559 meters)
The Tower is made of molten rock forced upwards from deep within the earth. Geological estimates place the age of Devils Tower at over 50 million years, though it is thought that erosion uncovered the rock formation only 1 or 2 million years ago.
In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt invoked the Antiquities Act, designating Devils Tower our nation's first national monument.
Devils Tower is sacred to many Northern Plains Native American tribes and indigenous people. Archeological discoveries show that native people lived here 10,000 years ago.
The name Devils Tower is likely a mistranslation of what the Natives call it. In the Lakota language the word for evil spirit is wakansica. The word for black bear is wahanksica and the natives actually refer to the peak as Bear Lodge or Bears Tipi.
