Hiking and Exploring Mount Diablo State Park
Join me on a trip to Mt Diablo where I drive up to the higher summit, take in the spectacular views and then I hike from the west peak to the east peak and back. This was an amazing hike and one of the most scenic I've ever done.
Mount Diablo is located next to Walnut Creek, California in Contra Costa County in the Coast Range of Northern California and situated in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area.
FROM WIKIPEDIA:
Mount Diablo is a mountain of the Diablo Range, in Contra Costa County of the eastern San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California. It is south of Clayton and northeast of Danville.
It is an isolated upthrust peak of 3,849 feet (1,173 m), visible from most of the San Francisco Bay Area. Mount Diablo appears from many angles to be a double pyramid and has many subsidiary peaks, the largest and closest of which is the other half of the double pyramid, North Peak, nearly as high in elevation at 3,557 feet (1,084 m) and about a mile northeast of the main summit.
The peak is in Mount Diablo State Park, a state park of about 20,000 acres (8,000 ha). The park was the first public open space of a complex—according to Save Mount Diablo—now including 38 preserves, including nearby city open spaces, regional parks, watersheds, that are buffered in some areas with private lands protected with conservation easements. Preserved lands on and around Mount Diablo total more than 90,000 acres (36,000 ha). The day use fee per vehicle for the park is by entrance way: $6 via Macedo Ranch (Danville) or Mitchell Canyon (Clayton), and $10 via South Gate Rd. (Danville) & North Gate Rd. (Walnut Creek) leading up Mount Diablo.
On a clear day the Sierra Nevada is plainly visible. The best views are after a winter storm; a snowy Sierra shows up better, and summer days are likely to be hazy. Lassen Peak, 181 miles (291 km) away, is occasionally just visible over the curve of the earth.[5][6] Sentinel Dome in Yosemite National Park is visible,[7] but Half Dome is hidden by the 8000-foot ridge at 37.755N 119.6657W. Eight bridges are visible, from west to east: San Mateo, Bay, Golden Gate, San Rafael, Carquinez, Benicia, Antioch, and Rio Vista.
Claims that the mountain's viewshed is the largest in the world—or second largest after Mount Kilimanjaro—are ill founded. It does boast one of the largest viewsheds in the Western United States and played a key role in California history. Countless peaks in the state are taller, but Mount Diablo has a remarkable visual prominence for a mountain of such low elevation. Its looming presence over much of the bay area, delta, and Central Valley, and good visibility even from the Mother Lode, all key regions during the gold rush and early statehood, made it an important landmark for mapping and navigation. The summit is used as the reference datum for land surveying in much of northern California and Nevada.

January 2019. Happy Birthday to me! It was a great day hiking on my birthday. I went on three hikes in Plumas National Forest, near Oroville California, to see these northern California waterfalls along the North Fork Feather River: Chambers Creek Falls, Tobin Falls, and Merlin Falls. Chambers Creek is among the best waterfalls in California. Afterwards, I went to Chicago Fire for pizza with my family. Awesome. Come join me on this exciting adventure.

WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA. LOCAL TOWN VIDEO TOUR - Contra Costa County, USA
Visit my webpage:
Walnut Creek serves as a hub for the neighboring cities within central Contra Costa County, due in part to its location at the junction of the highways from Sacramento and San Jose (I-680) and San Francisco/Oakland (HWY-24).
Walnut Creek has its own BART station and is the home to Broadway Plaza which is an open-air shopping center with notable department stores (such as by Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Macy’s ) and more than 35 retail stores. Boundary Oaks and Diablo Hills golf courses are located in Walnut Creek. There is also another private golf course in the gated neighborhood of Rossmoor which is an “active adult” community for residents 55 years or older.
Walnut Creek also owns more open space per capita than any other community in the state of California. Walnut Creek residents may attend schools in 5 public school districts. Finally, Mt. Diablo State Park’s north gate entrance is found in Walnut Creek.

Mount Diablo Challenge Pre Ride with Commentary
This video covers the entire South Gate to Summit climb up Mt Diablo at about 3x speed to give you a first hand feel for the climb. Having ridden it many times and having set some fast times up the climb, I comment on my thoughts about how to pace it and a few strategic tips about hot to approach pacing and drafting if you're doing the Challenge or riding it with people.
Even just watching the climb, knowing the turns, and seeing how steep it is throughout the climb can be very helpful. I would always recommend pre-riding climbs or time trial courses at least a couple of times before you try to do your best possible effort on a specific climb or course.
Here are a few extra tips beyond the commentary in the video...
Power: If you have a power meter, then use it to set a mostly steady power output throughout the ride. If you don't know what power you should be doing, aim for 80% of your peak 10-12m power, or about 90% of your 20-25m peak power.
Heart Rate: Aim for your 1h peak heart rate, but allow yourself at least 5-8 minutes for your heart rate to settle in that region. Try to let your heart rate recover a bit when it's flat by letting up on your power. These small moments of recovery can help you to go harder when it's steeper and harder.
Perceived effort: Doing an all-out effort up a tall mountain is hard, but try to stay as focused and relaxed as possible. Breathe deeply. Try not to let your heart rate or breathing get out of control.
Drink mix: I would definitely recommend riding up the mountain with a bottle of mix. Water is fine for hydration, but a sweet, carbohydrate rich drink mix will help you to perform your best if you're really going for it.
Training: Of course, the best way to be sure that you can do a good ride on Mount Diablo or any long climb is to train for it. I'll put out more material about that in the future, but of course, riding up Mount Diablo in training is the best preparation for racing up it at the Diablo Challenge. Having previously held the Strava KOM on Mount Diablo and having many elsewhere, I know that it always comes down to effective and specific training to get you to reach your potential. This is true whether you're climbing mountains, sprinting, or anything else. So keep at it and train smart, or get some guidance to help you to do so.

Day Hike - Mount Diablo Double Summit via Mitchell Canyon
If you are up for a very challenging day hike in the Bay Area, then this is it. We will scale Mount Diablo starting from Mitchell Canyon, all the way to the top of the primary peak, bag the North peak before descending back in a loop. This is a 14.2 mile hike, with just over 4600 feet in elevation gain.

Mount Diablo
Mount Diablo State Park is apart of the Diablo Range in Contra Costa County. Its 3,849-foot peak is visible throughout the Bay Area and provides a vast viewshed of California. Mixed Oak woodlands, sandstone formations, and beautiful grasslands provide habitat for a wide variety of species. Hot summers lead into cool winters with chances of snow at high elevation, while spring brings cascading waterfalls and colorful bursts of wildflowers.
Mt. Diablo: The Devil's in the details!
At the eastern edge of the San Francisco Bay Area, Mount Diablo, elevation 3,849 feet, stands alone on the edge of
California’s great Central Valley. At this point,
the Coast Range consists only of low hills, none
high enough to block the view from the upper
slopes of the mountain. As a result, the view is
spectacular. This is a must ride for local's and travelers alike.

Remnants from intelligent beings at Rock City, Mt. Diablo State Park, CA
Rock City is a large string of boulders strewn on the hills in an area that used to be on the shore of the ocean. Now it is inland from Berkeley CA. These boulders have been manipulated by various means, there is more here than meets the eye. Much of the interesting caves are not natural formations. Both natural erosion from water and human/intelligent intervention can be seen at this site. Just what is natural and what is artificially produced is foggy area as there are many possible explanations as to how the caves and stones were worked. There are many unusual looking boulders here and though there are clearly inscriptions they are from many different time periods and covered in graffiti.
