Western Science Center - Hemet, CA
Come share the excitement at this state-of-the-art museum complex!
Located off Domenigoni Parkway by Diamond Valley Lake, Western Science Center is home to a fascinating array of archaeological artifacts and Pleistocene Ice Age fossils that were unearthed at Diamond Valley Lake.
In the gallery you’ll meet “Max”, the largest mastodon found in the Western United States at the time of discovery, as well as “Xena”, a teenage Colombian mammoth. Let your imagination run wild as you walk on tempered glass, which houses “Little Stevie,” a large mastodon installed beneath the museum floor to re-create the actual dig site.
The museum campus provides excellent facilities for the research, curation, and presentation of the nearly 1,000,000 specimens discovered during the development of the Diamond Valley Lake in Hemet, California.
Scientists, researchers, students and the general public have an unparalleled opportunity to interact with and to understand the magnificent creatures and resourceful people who inhabited the Diamond and Domenigoni Valleys from the distant Ice Age past through today. There are plenty of hands on activities including a “make your own fossil” station.
Come early and take a walking tour through our native plant garden, and leave enough time to visit the museum store to pick up a unique item.
Programs for the community are held regularly at Western Science Center so make sure and check our website for special events, and visiting exhibits. If you become a member, you can get in free all year to a variety of exhibits, receptions, lectures, and events!
Whether it is dire wolves, saber-toothed cats, Pleistocene fossils, local family history, or archaeological artifacts, we have something for you!

Gary's T.V. & Video- Hemet California
This building always got my attention...Hemet is a city in the San Jacinto Valley in Riverside County, California, United States. It covers a total area of 27.847 square miles, about half of the valley, which it shares with the neighboring city of San Jacinto
Scenic Montezuma Valley Road at Anza Borrego Desert State Park
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is tucked into the southeastern corner of California. Running about 25 miles east to west and 50 miles north to south, it is California's largest state park encompassing more than 600,000 acres. The park is framed by, and includes many rugged mountain ranges: the Bucksnorts and the Santa Rosas on the north, the Jacumba Mountains on the south and the Vallecito and Pinyon Mountains on the west. To the east, the Borrego Mountains taper into the Carrizo Badlands before falling away into the Salton Trough.
There are more than 500 miles of roads in the park. There are routes up rocky hills, through deep sand, along scenic streams and down steep hills. Both primitive jeep roads and paved roads are also open to bicycles.
Start your exploration of the park at the Visitor's Center. At the entrance to the center is an excellent map of the park, above which sits a model of a full-sized Aiolornis incredibilis, the incredible bird god of the winds. The Visitor's Center's exhibits show how geological forces shaped the landscape, life forms and human stories of the Anza-Borrego Desert region, and feature a small slot canyon entrance. It is also good place to get the latest information on the roads and hiking trails.

478- Bautista Canyon Road, Bautista Conservation Camp #36
Today we are headed up Bautista Canyon Road for a drive by Bautista Conservation Camp #36, part of the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, aka CDCR.
The primary mission of the camp is to provide trained hand crews to assist the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection with suppression of wild land fires, emergency flood control, and Search and Rescue.
The CDCR is responsible for the selection, supervision, care and discipline of the inmates.
On June 27, 1990, the worst tragedy that a camp could endure hit Bautista. Seventeen Bautista crewmembers were overrun while battling a fire in the Domenigoni Mountains, Southwest of Hemet. This fire resulted in the death of two Bautista crew members, Victor Ferrara and Aaron Perry.
In remembrance of the fallen firefighters of Bautista and fallen firefighters throughout the State, fire fighter memorials began dedications in 1997.
The Bautista CDCR has proudly represented the camp program by responding to emergency incidents from the borders of Oregon to Mexico and the Pacific Ocean to Nevada/Arizona.
CALFIRE maintains 44 camps throughout California, supervises the work of the inmate fire crews, and is responsible for inmate custody while on daily grade projects.
CDCR staff often accompanies inmate fire crews on out-of-county assignments or on local assignments located near residential areas.
Inmates are directly supervised 24hours per day while on work projects and while assigned to emergencies.
In addition to fires, crews have been assigned to rescue efforts in local parks, and are also eligible to respond for flood suppression.
The camp is nestled in the Historical Bautista Canyon, the route used by the Conquistador Juan Bautista de Anza in his discovery of the Riverside and San Bernardino Valleys.
Also known as the sight of the original Bautista springtime exercises. Located some 3000 feet in elevation, the camp is exposed to a medley of climatic conditions, typical to its high desert terrain.
Often the summer is dry and hot, while the winter is cold, with an occasional snowfall in the months of December through April.
Bautista has a maximum capacity of 120 inmates, which provide six trained firefighting hand crews.
When not responding to emergency incidents, the inmates' work on conservation projects including eradication of nonnative plant species at Diamond Valley Lake and Lake Matthews, fighting the bark beetle infestation in and around the community of Idyllwild.
Community projects have included construction of community centers, fire stations, parks, and soccer and baseball fields for Valley Wide Recreation District.
Bautista’s cabinet shop is in demand throughout Riverside County, to design and remodel their offices and living spaces. Bautista is also known for their expertise in making plaques, signs, and distinctive logos.
The prisoners like the fire camps because they rarely get to see the outdoors and get paid $1 per day. They sent into areas with high heat and dangerous situations. They will never be hired to work for the fire department with a criminal record, however.
426-San Jacinto Mtn, Lake Hemet Dam, The Largest Solid Masonry Dam in the World
Lake Hemet Dam, The Largest Solid Masonry Dam in the World!
Development of the San Jacinto Valley can be traced to 1887, with the formation of the Lake Hemet Water Company and the Hemet Land Company by Edward L. Mayberry, his wealthy San Francisco friend, William F. Whittier, and their partners.
These two companies allowed the partnership to acquire land and water rights from the San Jacinto Valley to the west end of Garner Valley in the San Jacinto Mountains.
Lake Hemet Water Company placed the first stone of the Hemet Dam on January 6, 1891.
When this arched masonry structure was completed in 1895 at a height of 122.5 feet, it was the largest solid masonry dam in the world, a title it would retain until the construction of Roosevelt Dam in Arizona in 1911. In 1923, the Hemet dam was raised to a height of 135 feet.
In the early 1890s, Lake Hemet Dam, one of the engineering marvels of its time, was constructed in the San Jacinto Mountains, above todays city of Hemet.
Without it, the city may never have existed.
This movie will be included as part of the Winchester Ca. About this Place series.

Palm Springs, California, USA
Palm Springs Aerial Tramway ride, view of Palm Springs from San Jacinto Peak and San Jacinto National Park in Palm Springs, California, USA during our trip on Aug. 13, 2011. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway takes people up the sheer cliffs of Chino Canyon during the two-and-one-half mile breathtaking journey to a pristine wilderness. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is the world's largest rotating tramcar.
The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway was opened in September 1963 as a way of getting from the floor of the Coachella Valley to near the top of San Jacinto Peak and was constructed in rugged Chino Canyon. Before its construction, the only way to the top of the mountain was to hike for several hours from Idyllwild.
The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is located in the rugged Chino Canyon on the north edge of Palm Springs and is about two hours by car from Los Angeles and San Diego.
Since the attraction's opening in September 1963, over 12 million people have been safely transported by the Tramway into the majestic mountains overlooking the Coachella Valley.
The 12-and-and-a-half minute ride begins at the Valley Station at 2,643 ft (806 m) and passes up North America's sheerest mountain face through five life zones on its way to the Mountain Station at 8,516 ft (2,596 m) above mean sea level. Travelers start in the Sonoran Desert and arrive at an alpine forest.
The floor of the 18 ft (5.5 m) diameter aerial tram-cars rotates constantly, making two complete revolutions throughout the duration of the journey so that the passengers can see in all directions without moving. With a maximum capacity of 80 passengers it is the largest of the three rotating aerial trams in the world. The other Rotair aerial trams are located in Cape Town, South Africa and Titlis, Switzerland.
Passengers disembark at the Mountain Station in the alpine wilderness of Long Valley and Mount San Jacinto State Park. The air can be as much as 40 °F or 22 °C degrees cooler at the top than in the desert. Visitors can walk along nature trails, take a burro ride or even play in the snow during the winter months. Back-country hiking can be done with a permit from the U.S. Forest Service. There are two restaurants at the summit, one of which specializes in fine dining. Both stations have gift shops specializing in Aerial Tramway-related merchandise as well as educational toys. A video presentation of the history of the attraction plays continuously in a theater at the Mountain Station. It was produced by Palm Springs television station KESQ-TV with voiceovers provided by Palm Springs radio personalities.
The view at the top can stretch northward for more than 200 mi (320 km) on a clear day, all the way to Mount Charleston north of Las Vegas, Nevada. Views to the east and west can stretch as far as 75 mi (121 km). California's Salton Sea is plainly visible to the southeast.

Lake Hemet, CA from Shannon C.

Shannon C.'s Review on The Dyrt:
▶︎ Lakeside camping in the mountains
We stayed at Lake Hemet during a weekend in August and it was super crowed and hot. It has all the amenities to make for great car camping and fishing but a bit too noisy. Would be a great place for to camp with children. RV's and tents welcome. There's even a store at the entrance of the park if you need any last minute items you forgot. It's about 15 mins from Idyllwild if you want to escape the heat and/or do a little hiking.
