Obits & Omits: Meet Some of the Women Overlooked by The New York Times Obituaries Section, Until Now
- As the world marked International Women’s Day on Wednesday, The New York Times began a new project highlighting the lives of remarkable women who never had an obituary in the paper, until now. The list might surprise you. It includes the pioneering anti-lynching journalist Ida B. Wells; the writer and poet Sylvia Plath; Qiu Jin, who was known as China’s Joan of Arc; the groundbreaking photographer Diane Arbus; the woman who helped engineer the Brooklyn Bridge, Emily Warren Roebling; Charlotte Brontë, who wrote “Jane Eyre”; Henrietta Lacks, whose cells led to a medical revolution; and Ada Lovelace, who is considered to be the world’s first computer programmer. The New York Times is calling the project “Overlooked,” and it is part of an effort to make up for the paper’s 167-year history of focusing largely on men—mostly white men—in the obituary pages. For more, watch our full interview with Amy Padnani, digital editor of obituaries at The New York Times, who came up with the idea of “Overlooked.”

Nancy Gertner - In Defense of Women, The Susan Saxe Case
Judge Nancy Gertner launched her career by defending Susan Saxe, an anti-war demonstrator accused of robbery and felony murder. Judge Gertner reveals the details of how she achieved the win of the century in the Saxe case, much to the surprise of herself, her client, the prosecutors and the press.
Judge Gertner goes on to describe her pioneering work as a woman lawyer in the 70's and 80's, including the astonishing lack of respect she experienced as a young female lawyer, her decision to take on abortion cases, her experience as one of the first women serving the defense in murder cases, her significant work in anti-discrimination cases and how she managed to balance both her career and her family.
Judge Nancy Gertner joins Massachusetts School of Law Professor Diane Sullivan on this episode of The Massachusetts School of Law's Educational Forum. Judge Gertern and Professor Sullivan discuss the judge's new book, In Defense of Women-Memoirs of an Unrepentant Advocate.

New York City’s 43rd Annual
Village Halloween Parade
Halloween or Hallowe'en (a contraction of All Hallows' Evening), also known as Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Eve, is a celebration observed in a number of countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Hallows' Day. It begins the three-day observance of Allhallowtide, the time in the liturgical year dedicated to remembering the dead, including saints (hallows), martyrs, and all the faithful departed.
It is widely believed that many Halloween traditions originated from ancient Celtic harvest festivals, particularly the Gaelic festival Samhain; that such festivals may have had pagan roots; and that Samhain itself was Christianized as Halloween by the early Church. Some believe, however, that Halloween began solely as a Christian holiday, separate from ancient festivals like Samhain.
Halloween activities include trick-or-treating (or the related guessing), attending Halloween costume parties, carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories and watching horror films. In many parts of the world, the Christian religious observances of All Hallows' Eve, including attending church services and lighting candles on the graves of the dead, remain popular, although elsewhere it is a more commercial and secular celebration. Some Christians historically abstained from meat on All Hallows' Eve, a tradition reflected in the eating of certain vegetarian foods on this vigil day, including apples, potato pancakes, and soul cakes.

Clarice Smith Distinguished Lecture: critic Christopher Knight
A thorough analysis of the specific images chosen by Pop art's leading artists demonstrates that Pop’s actual subject is art culture, not pop culture. Commercial imagery drawn from mass media provided a relevant visual language with which to explore a wide range of traditional subjects in painting and sculpture, both Modern and historical. There's a reason that Andy Warhol chose soup for his first suite of Pop paintings. That reason is not, as the artist slyly claimed, that he ate soup for lunch every day. Join Los Angeles Times art critic, Christopher Knight as he explores the Pop inventory that instead turns out to be an extensive catalog of other art.
This annual series is made possible by the generosity of Clarice Smith.
Proof of Life

Co-starring David Morse (Bait, The Green Mile) and Golden Globe-winner David Caruso (TV's C.S.I. Miami, TV's NYPD Blue). Directed by Academy Award-winner Taylor Hackford (Ray, The Devil's Advocate).

Photography can only represent the present. Once photographed, the subject becomes part of the past. -- Berenice Abbott
Capturing images that reflected the epic transition of New York City from a genteel, older city to a modern urban center, photographer Berenice Abbott documented the city's changing landscape during the 1930s. The larger-than-life steel skyscrapers, juxtaposed against architecture of the past, set the scene for a culturally and visually exciting metropolis. Inspired by photographer Eugene Atget and his documentation of vieux Paris (Old Paris), Abbott looked to replicate the scope of his work in her images of New York.
Bonnie Yochelson is an independent curator and art historian. Author of Berenice Abbott: Changing New York, The Complete WPA Project (1997), Yochelson will explore how Atget's photographs of Paris inspired Abbott's epic New York project.
Yochelson's talk, Berenice Abbott, Eugene Atget, and the Problem of Documentary Photography, was held in conjunction with Berenice Abbott: Changing New York, a photography exhibition on view January 12 - April 21, 2013, at the Ulrich Museum of Art. Her Buzz-Worthy Art Talk was Thursday, March 14, 2013, in 210 McKnight Art Center West (School of Art and Design) on the Wichita State University campus.

Mr. Bermudez was falsely identified by eyewitnesses as the murderer, and he was sentenced to 23 years to life in prison. After serving 18 years in prison for a murder he did not commit, Mr. Bermudez was fully exonerated and proclaimed actually innocent in 2009. Come hear his story of injustice, perseverance, and ultimate triumph over a faulty eyewitness identification process and the forces that jailed an innocent man for so long.

Not the Usual Ethnic Subjects: The Significance of Guido for Italian American Studies
March 30, 2011
Despite the fact that Guido -- the subject of the popular television show, Jersey Shore -- is an ethnic slur often associated with a hedonistic life style, it is an important aspect of Italian American studies.
Dr. Donald Tricarico, Professor of Social Sciences at Queensborough Community College, will address Guido as a contemporary youth subculture in New York City. Over the years, Guido has been identified with dance music and body building in such spaces as nightclubs and gyms while a new identity has crystallized in a struggle for inclusion and respect in American culture.
Dr. Tricarico will also explore the Italian American experience beyond the initial immigrant period and track Guido's roots to a larger population whose ethnic culture was forged in inner city neighborhoods which are now dispersing throughout the metropolitan New York City.
The study of Guido, then, opens a window on the possibility of Italian American ethnicity in later generations and more mainstream settings.
Dr. Donald Tricarico, Professor of Sociology at Queensborough Community College for more than 30 years, has studied Italian American life in New York City his entire professional career. Born in the Greenwich Village Italian American community, Dr. Tricarico received a Ph.D. in Sociology in 1980 from The New School for Social Research. His published work includes a book on the neighborhood he grew up in as well as numerous book chapters and journal articles. He has also presented papers at professional conferences. He has specialized in Italian American youth culture in New York City since the 1980s.
