Diesel House Copenhagen
B&W No. 1, DM140, was the first diesel engine delivered by B&W, back in 1904, to N. Larsen wagon factory in Copenhagen. Its purpose was to power a dynamo that would provide lighting power to the factory, and a driven shaft for pulling machines. After 20 years of operation it was sold to a pump station in Jutland, where it kept going seamlessly.
Worlds biggest engine start, running and stopping
urmeister & Wain had surpassed itself. The world’s largest diesel engine was delivered to the H.C. Ørsted power plant located in the southern part of Copenhagen. It was an engine with impressive specifications.
The H.C. Ørsted engine is 24.5 m long, 12.5 m tall, and weighs as much as 1,400 tonnes. This technical masterpiece generates an output of 15 MW, which corresponds to 22,500 effective horsepower. A special feature of the engine is that it is a double-acting two-stroke engine. This means that ignition takes place both when the piston is in its top position and when it is in its bottom position – a technology which is no longer in use.
From its first trial run in 1933 and some 30 years ahead, the H.C. Ørsted engine remained firmly seated on the throne as the largest of its kind. Even today it still ranks among the largest land-based power plant engines.
Up until the late sixties, the purpose of the eight-cylinder giant was to generate electricity to Copenhagen and most of Zealand during the peak loads of the electricity grid (in the morning and at 15.00-16.00 when most people got off from work). During the Second World War, the H. C. Ørsted power plant and its engine played an important role as a hideout for the resistance movement and a place where they could store weapons and other resistance effects.
The engine works on diesel oil with a calorific value of approx. 10,000 kcal/kg. The diesel oil is injected into the cylinders with a pressure of approx. 350-400 bar. The fuel oil consumption is approx. 240 g per kWh at 12,000 kW. The scavenge air comes from four blowers, powered by the engine via a gear, with an output of approx. 1,800 m3 air per minute at a pressure of 0.25 bar. The exhaust gas temperature is 300°C at 12,000 kW. The bearings are pressure lubricated at a pressure of 2.5 bar. The 40 tons content of the lubricating oil tank is injected through the bearings as lubricating oil and through the pistons as cooling oil approx. 10 times an hour. The engine is freshwater cooled in a closed system which is cooled by water from the Copenhagen
harbour. It is 24.5 m long, 12.5 m tall and weighs 1,400 tons. From this, the weight of 1 complete cylinder constitutes 20 tons, the weight of one opposed piston with
10 piston rings constitutes 4.5 tons, the weight of the 730 mm thick crankshaft constitutes 140 tons and the weight of the turning wheel 80 tons.
The engine was last in use during the extensive power breakdown in 2003 that hit Copenhagen and most of Zealand and large parts of Sweden. The engine’s ability to start unaided without the use of electricity meant that it played a major role in the efforts to re-establish power, because modern-day engines need electricity to be able to start.
Today, the engine is only started to enjoy the attending public. This takes place every first and third Sunday of the month, where the amazed public gape at the 22,500 powerful horses unfolding in an inferno of engine roars and pleasant-smelling diesel fumes.

I have no idea what the guy was saying as I don't speak Danish. But the Engine itself was awesome. And the smell of the diesel, made me miss working on engines.
