We had a slow day of Mackerel fishing, so we made the best of it by doing a bit of diving and spearfishing too.

Key Largo Fishing Charter boat.
We took a charter boat out 17 miles off of Key Largo shores. Preston caught a few Bonita's and black groupers. The waters that day were so beautiful!
Key West Charter Boat Fishing
We took a trip down to Key West. While we were there we climbed aboard the Salty Goat Fishing charter boat. Although we didn't have the most successful day of fishing (I believe due to a gentleman bringing a Banana on the boat) we still had a great time! Beverly and I only caught a couple non-keeper fish so we went on our merry way after the day was done. We got a tan and saw the beautiful Tarpon feeding dockside. After the boat we went to Dante's for a snack and then back to our Hostel the NYAH. Look out for more videos from our trip to come!

Kingfish Trip In Islamorada Florida Keys Aboard Charter Boat Skipper
This is a video of my wife, Lyn, and I fishing offshore on the Atlantic side of Islamorada in the Florida Keys in mid-February of 1997. We had trolled for kings with Capt. Paul O'Donnell aboard his charter named the Skipper another time (see my channel) before and had a great time. We were after sailfish but caught several king mackerel or kings as they are known in the Keys using ballyhoo for bait near the Hump. At about 4:30 into this video, we had 3 fish on at once, so there is one minute of blank screen and you will have to fast forward it. It's always a great way to spend the day productively. I trailered (major hassle) my center console boat from our home on the Lake of the Ozarks to our condo in Islamorada to do a lot of fishing, but it just wasn't worth the time , effort, and expense when there are knowledgable people like Paul and his mate to get you on the fish fast. Islamorada is definitely the Sport Fishing Capital of the World! - This was video taped using a Canon E230 with a Sony Video8 cassette.

Something Fishy in Florida?
There is something fishy going on in Florida.
This revised video (with better sound) presents highlights of both sides (pro and con) of the proposed Gamefish/Sportfish framework that several fishing special interest groups are advocating.
The Coastal Conservation Association (CCA) has been pushing for this sort of framework in other states for years as evidenced by North Carolina House Bill 353. The Bonefish Tarpon Trust (BTT) is a strong proponent of the designations. Other groups such as the freediving and scuba diving community are opposed on the grounds that this framework might allow the circumvention of the normal process of fisheries management that is largely based on science.
Diving in the State of Florida is a very substantial industry. The potential arbitrary nature of dropping fish such as cobia and many others into these categories is of great concern, especially to the consumptive diving community that enjoys fishing and lobstering. The economic impact of such moves on the dive equipment manufacturers, retailers and charter boats would be substantial.
Based on the public input at the December meeting certain changes were made such as the removal of the gear-type bias, however this is not enough. There is already in place a long-established science-based regulatory process for managing fish in Florida. The arguments that this framework is needed for marketing Florida fishing or managing fish for abundance are dubious at best. Thus, the entire proposed Gamefish/Sportfish Designation Framework must be vigorously opposed. It is not satisfactory to simply state spearfishing for the species permit would be allowed. The whole framework must not be put in place for the reasons discussed in the video and for other reasons.
For further discussion, please see the forum website Spearboard.com regulations section at this link:
Please attend the next FWC meeting in Orlando on the morning of Wednesday, February 13, 2013 to voice your opposition to this proposed framework for futures fisheries management that is Commission Chairman Wright's publically-stated personal agenda item or goal to create a legacy for this commission. Details for the meeting are at this link:
Also, please send an e-mail with your respectfully-worded thoughts to

Florida Keys Wooden Boat Fishing, Me and my stuff:
My Boats:
The original single seater Kayak is a Great Auk designed by Nick Shade of Guillemot Kayaks and built by me with my own two hands. It’s 16 1/2 feet long (the design is 17 feet, but I scaled it to fit in the garage I built it in) and 24 inches wide. This was the first boat I ever built.
“Tiny” the double kayak is another Nick Shade design (Micro Bootlegger) and was also built by me. Videos of the later parts of the build are on my channel for your perusal (don’t forget to like and comment). It’s 18 feet long and 28 inches wide, for a stable and roomy ride, even with a bunch of fishing stuff riding along with me (or a second person).
When I add the outrigger (which is just one of the pontoons off my Catamaran) I can include the Suzuki 2.5HP outboard to make tracks.
My “Three Week Canoe” was, once again, built by yours truly, and you can see the entire build in my award winning video series “The Three Week Strip Canoe Build”. Available on a computer screen near you. The design is the classic “Puddle Duck” by Gil Gilpatrick.
Last but not least (just kidding, yes it is), is my experimental and highly controversial “Stand Up Paddle Pontoon Catamaran Mini Party Barge”. Built AND designed by me, with no help or consultation of any kind from anyone. Which may explain why it confuses the hell out of anyone who sees it. It looks like a toy, paddles like a toy (but a really cool toy) and, best of all, is just plain fun.
My Bike:
My bike is a Schwinn (don’t you just love saying that?) Meridian Trike, because nothing says secure in his masculinity like riding down the side of US1 on a tricycle (I’m thinking of starting a trike club, we’ll get heavy leather jackets and sweat a lot, how cool am I?). Mine is tricked out with an LED headlight for early morning rides, a gigantic basket to hold all of my stuff, and four custom made PVC rod holders held on with the best hose clamps money can buy.
Fishing Gear:
My gear is mostly whatever cheap stuff I find at yard sales or on clearance, but when I buy quality it’s usually the Penn Fierce II series of spinning rod and real combos. What I like best about this Penn line is the name. Seriously, who doesn’t want to be “Fierce” (they work pretty well too). I’m also a fan of Mustad hooks (when I’m not cheating out and buying generics).
Cameras:
I have two primary cameras and a back up. The primaries are a GoPro Hero4 Black that I chose because someone offered it to me in trade for an arcade game I was trying to get rid of, and a GoPro Hero Session 4 that was a fathers day gift, so I will worship and treasure it forever (or until it quits working, whichever comes first). My backup camera is an iPhone 7 because, well duh, its got a camera built right in.
I do all of my editing on my iMac desktop computer because I’m old enough that I don’t just do it all on a laptop and I use the free GoPro Studio editing software because I’m cheap and don’t want to have to learn to use something better.
That’s me and my stuff. See you on the water.

The Seven Mile Bridge is a famous bridge in the Florida Keys, in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It runs over a channel between the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida Strait, connecting Knight's Key (part of the city of Marathon, Florida) in the Middle Keys to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys. Among the longest bridges in existence when it was built, it is one of the many bridges on US 1 in the Keys, where the road is called the Overseas Highway.( Wikipedia )

Great Lakes Wreck Diving - The Northerner, Port Washington, WI 8/11/13
When diving the Northerner wreck near Port Washington, WI, the joke among our dive buddies has been keep a good bite on your regulator, or it might just fall out of your mouth when you first see the ship -- the dark waters of Lake MI open up and you come upon this gorgeous wreck for the first time, sitting near perfectly intact, upright on the Lake Michigan lake-bed @ 130+ feet - it's an awe-inspiring dive.
... as dive buddy Dan C said after we surfaced - THIS is the dive all the practice (40 degree water temps, dry suit, deep dive, unpredictable lake conditions) is for!
This dive was held on Sunday, Aug. 11. Dive charter operator was the awesome Mai Tai Adventure Charters out of Milwaukee with amiable and all-things-nautical knowledgeable Capt. Rick. Divers include Mike B., Dan C. and Joli C.. Our group was in full agreement - this is one of THE wrecks on west side of Lake Michigan (or anywhere) - truly a world class wreck dive. Takes a little work to find an operation out of Port Washington (20+ miles north of Milwaukee), but it's worth it - dive this wreck!
The Northerner history (from Wikipedia):
The Northerner was built in 1850 in Clayton, New York by John Oades. It was originally owned by Henry T. Bacon, a New York merchant, and co-owned and operated by Russell Disbrow. At that time, the Northerner mainly traveled on Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. In 1859, the Northerner was damaged in a storm on Lake Ontario and was reconstructed at Wells Island, New York. In 1863, the ship was sold to interests in Chicago. At that point, the Northerner became involved in shipping lumber on Lake Michigan. In 1865, the Northerner was sold to Nicholas Ronk and Andreas Ryerson. Ryerson would be the captain. In November 1868, the hull of The Northerner was damaged at Cedar Grove, Wisconsin, while taking on a cargo of timber. The ship made it to Port Washington, where temporary repairs were made. Then, it was towed back to Milwaukee by another ship; the Cuyahoga. The Northerner capsized en route to Milwaukee on November 29, 1868. The crew managed to escape to the Cuyahog

Sight Fishing Cobia in Virginia Beach - 4K
In this episode of BlacktipH, I join Capt. Austin from Finao Sportfishing Charters in Virginia Beach to go sight fishing for cobia in the famous Chesapeake Bay. I landed in a tropical storm, which completely messed up the water conditions for the Chesapeake Bay. On the first day of fishing, the conditions were very tough, the water was dirty and the seas were high. On the second day of fishing, the weather was much better. I filmed some of the most epic and insane drone footage of cobia eating baits on the surface. This entire trip was a continuation of the 100lb cobia quest. I started this quest in Destin Florida and now I am fishing in Virginia Beach.
