Discover the Florida Springs
Florida is best known for its sand and salt. But the state has 11,000 miles of rivers, streams and waterways and is home to 900 freshwater springs. These fountains of life bubble up from deep underground, nourishing plants, animals and people.
In the past, people flocked to the springs believing they had special healing powers. The springs still attract visitors for their crystal-clear waters and abundance of wildlife.
Some springs are easy to find, out in the open, and others are hidden in caves. Between November and March, it’s easy to spot manatees swimming through the clear waters.

Visit Juniper Springs Recreation Area in Ocala National Forest - Camp, Hike, Paddle, and Enjoy
Showcasing sparkling springs in a subtropical setting, Juniper Springs is one of the oldest and best known recreation areas on the East Coast. Located between Ocala and Ormond Beach along SR 40, this complex of swimming and picnic area, campground, and trails was constructed in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The setting is unlike any other found in the United States, with hundreds of tiny bubbling springs and massive springs gushing out of crevices in the earth beneath a dense canopy of palms and oaks, an oasis within the heart of the desert-like Big Scrub.

Florida's 2017 Silver River Knap-In and Prehistoric Arts Festival at Silver Springs
Here is the 2017 Silver River Knap-In and Prehistoric Arts Festival. Expert flint knappers, archaeologists, potters, hide tanners, bow makers and other specialists in prehistoric skills gathered from across the eastern U.S. to demonstrate and sell their arts. Vendors offered reproduction stone tools, raw stone, flint knapping tools, unique crafts, food and more.
We enjoyed archery, tomahawk and atlatl dart throwing demonstrations. A flint knapping competition and on-going prehistoric skills demonstration also took place. Besides the knap-in, We explored the Silver River Museum and hiked on the trails of the state park.
All kinds of folks come together in the woods on the edge of the Silver River near Silver Springs. Some are bushcrafters, survivalists, and flintknappers. Others are artists, musicians, and food vendors.
Flint knapping is the art of making stone tools by controlling how stone breaks in order to create specific shapes and sharp edges. Arrow and spear points, knives, axes, scrapers, drill bits and a variety of other tools can be made from flint (also called chert) by removing portions of the stone through various techniques. Before metal working was developed, this craft was extremely important.
