Disney's Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular part 3 of 4
Open Road - Episode 4: Disneyland
Welcome back to Open Road! As I mentioned in my last post, Open Road has been on the road and there is still a lot to come. After visiting Dallas, I went back home to Orlando for a couple days and then left on my way even further west to California to visit Disneyland. I’m sure you’re probably thinking “you live at Disney. Why would you travel across the country to visit Disney?!” Well, we’ll get to that.
So, let’s get to the reason why someone who lives is Disney’s back yard would want to travel across the country to go to Disney. Simply put: it may be familiar, but it’s different. Disneyland has attractions that Disney World does not. Even the attractions they do have in common are slightly different or re-imagined depending on the season. They have shows and entertainment that Disney World does not.
There is one reason I decided to travel in October as opposed to a different time of year. I wanted to experience Haunted Mansion Holiday. From October through December, the Haunted Mansion re-imagined into a Nightmare Before Christmas. I was very impressed with how well executed this was. Honestly, I was just expecting some Jack Skellington decorations. Instead, the entire experience is transformed. The exterior is completely redecorated. The pre-show is completely changed and every aspect of the ride itself from the visuals to the audio is totally changed to the Nightmare theme. This was one of my favorite experiences on this trip.
Disneyland also has one of my favorite attractions from my childhood that can no longer be found at Disney World. Growing up, my favorite ride was 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. This has since been filled in and paved over at Disney World, but still exists at Disneyland, only it is now known as the Finding Nemo Submarine Adventure. It looks different and it now involves talking fish, but it is the exact same ride. This will always be one of my favorites if for no other reason than nostalgia.
Another thing that Disneyland has that Disney World does not is California Adventure. For those Orlando locals, if Epcot and MGM ever got together and had a child, it would be California Adventure. And it is incredible! This is the first time I had visited California Adventure since Cars Land opened and it is extremely well executed! One evening I quite literally just sat on a bench for an hour and just watched everything going on. The Radiator Springs Racers is one of the best rides I’ve been on at a Disney park in quite some time.
The entertainment at Disneyland is also different from what you find in Orlando (but apparently that is changing). After exiting the Tower of Terror, I stumbled upon one of the best bands I’ve seen at a theme park: Mad T Party. They put on an incredible show with a great lighting display and a set list you would not expect to hear at Disney. At the end of the day, California Adventure puts on an outstanding night show: World of Color. I’ve heard good things about the show, but it was far better than I expected. The lights, the music, the water, the effects, it was just fantastic.
My trip to Disneyland was an incredible experience! I am planning on going back for the 60th anniversary events taking place after Memorial Day. Look forward to this as well as my upcoming posts from the Holidays at the parks in Orlando as well as Monster Jam!

HALLOWEENTIME DISNEYLAND VLOG
Here is a peek at Halloweentime at Disneyland Resort. We rode rides, looked at merch, and had an awesome dinner at the new Lamplight Lounge. Some of the rides we had to edit a lot of the footage out because it was too dark, sorry about that! We got as much as we could and we'll get even more at Mickey's Halloween Party next month!

Soarin' Over California at Disney California Adventure
According to Wikipedia... Soarin' Over California is a simulator attraction at Disney California Adventure (part of the Disneyland Resort). It debuted with the park on February 8, 2001. The same attraction opened on May 5, 2005 at Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, as Soarin'.
The attraction, which lasts about four minutes and 40 seconds, takes 87 guests at a time on a simulated hang glider tour of California, flying over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Redwood Creek in Humboldt County, Napa Valley, Monterey, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park (including Yosemite Falls and Half Dome), the PGA West golf course in La Quinta (credited in the queue video presentation as Palm Springs), Camarillo, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Fresno, San Diego, Malibu, Los Angeles, and Disneyland itself during the Christmas season. The last few scenes transition from daytime to dusk and then to night, culminating in Disneyland's Holiday fireworks surrounding the riders in the nighttime sky. In addition to the state's various landscapes, the ride also highlights its diverse recreation, including snow skiing, river rafting, kayaking, golf, horseback riding, hot air ballooning and of course, hang gliding. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds and aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) at San Diego's Naval Air Station North Island are also featured. An original score by film composer Jerry Goldsmith accompanies the imagery, and appropriate scents (citrus, pine, sagebrush, ocean mist) fill the air as the ride vehicles themselves move gently to simulate the sensations of flight.
Soarin' Over California was first conceptualized in 1996 as Ultra Flight, a name which can still be seen on the tower consoles of the California Adventure attraction. It was to feature an OMNIMAX screen with an inverted track allowing guests to fly over California's landmarks. The attraction would have three load levels and the system would operate on a horizontal cable, much like a dry cleaner's rack. This plan was abandoned, however, when it was determined that the construction and labor costs for that design would be prohibitive. It seemed that Soarin' wouldn't become a reality until engineer Mark Sumner developed a different idea for the ride vehicles, using an Erector Set and string to create a working model. This design would allow Disney to efficiently load guests on one level instead of three, thus cutting construction and labor costs greatly.
Each ride vehicle within consists of three rows of seats under a wing-like canopy. After guests have been safely restrained in the vehicle using standard lap belts, the canopy descends slightly and a cantilever system lifts the chairs forward and into the air with the guests' feet dangling freely. The vehicle is lifted forward so that guests look into a large, concave movie screen onto which aerial views of California are projected. The scenes were shot with an IMAX HD frame rate - 48 frames per second, twice the conventional output for regular films. Since the vehicle is moved forward toward the center of the dome, guests can only see the images projected on the screen and experience the sensation of flight. The ride structure contains about one million pounds of steel, and 37 tons are lifted during each ride cycle.
To enhance the illusion of flight, subtle vertical movements of the seats are synchronized to the film. According to cast members who operate this attraction, the carriages do not move horizontally. Sensations of horizontal motion are created using a combination of vertical carriage movement and then turning image on the screen. In addition, scents complementing the various scenes are injected into the air streams blowing on riders. In the Ventura orange field scene, for example, guests are treated to the scent of orange blossoms. The mountain scenes are accompanied by the aroma of evergreens. The Monterey and Malibu scenes have the scent of a sea breeze.

History - Disney California Adventure Park 2001 - 2012
Disney California Adventure Park, commonly referred to as Disney California Adventure, California Adventure, or DCA, is a theme park located in Anaheim, California. It is owned and operated by The Walt Disney Company through its Parks, Experiences and Products division. The 72-acre park is themed after the history and culture of California, which celebrates the fun and adventure of the state through the use of various Disney, Pixar and Marvel properties. The park opened on February 8, 2001, as Disney's California Adventure Park or Disney's California Adventure, and it is the second of two theme parks built at the Disneyland Resort complex, after Disneyland Park.
The concept of a theme park dedicated to California arose from a meeting of Disney executives in 1995, following the cancellation of the WestCOT project. Construction of the park began in 1998 and was completed by early 2001. Disney initially projected high attendance rates at the new park; however, a series of preview openings held in January 2001 led to negative reviews, and after the park officially opened to the public on February 8, 2001, the company's attendance projections were never met. Disney spent the next several years incrementally adding new rides, shows, and attractions, and implementing other promotions aimed at boosting attendance. In 2007, Disney announced a major expansion of the park as well as a major overhaul of a significant portion of the park. Construction lasted for five years and was completed in stages, culminating with the opening of Buena Vista Street and Cars Land in June 2012.

Also, this was recorded before the scrim went up on the castle, however there was still a wall blocking the bottom of the castle so we had to film it at a higher angle. We will post another version of the Castle once the scrim is down.

Aladdin
Taken at the Aladdin show at the California Adventure theme park at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. Highly recommend seeing this 45-minute show. As one person put it, it's like seeing half a Broadway show for free. The actors were awesome, but the Genie really stands out--he's hysterically funny.
