The Diu fort (Union territory of Daman and Diu - India)
(EN) The Diu Fort, is located on the west coast of India in Diu, a Union Territory, administered by the Government of India. The fort was built by the Portuguese during their colonial rule of the Diu island. The Diu town is located to the west of the fort. The fort was built in 1535 subsequent to a defense alliance forged by Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat and the Portuguese when Humayun, the Mughal Emperor waged war to annex this territory. The fort was strengthened over the years, till 1546. Portuguese ruled over this territory from 1537 (from the year they took control of the fort and also the Diu town fully) till 1961 (for 424 years, the longest period by any colonial rule in the world) they were forced to quit only in December 1961 (even though India became an independent country in 1947) during a military action called the Operation Vijay launched by the Government of India, whereafter Diu was merged with India and became a centrally administered Union Territory {UT).
The importance of the Diu Fort was highlighted by an opinion poll conducted (through the Internet and telephone when 239,418 people participated in Portugal) by the Portuguese (Portuguese government's initiative) to list out the New Seven Wonders of Portugal built during their colonial rule. The Diu fort and the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa were chosen as the two wonders from India, among the seven from across the world, out of a list of 27 monuments built in 16 countries during the Portuguese rule. This list of new monuments was declared on June 10, 2009 on the occasion of the Portuguese National Day held in Portugal.[3][7] The district administrator of Diu encouraged by this announcement said

1. Ghogla Beach
The Golden sand beach undulates into the horizon while the Arabian Sea laps away at the edge as though imploring the sands to let it find its own beach.

The Naida caves are located on the periphery of the Diu fort. These caves have a big network of tunnels with square hewn steps.
3. Nagoa Beach
Famous for its pristine beauty and swaying palm trees, Nagoa Beach in Diu is an ideal and a recommended place for tourists all over the world. The place is well connected with the resorts, hence it making it easy for the travellers to relax and explore its beauty at the same time. The beach is surrounded by beautiful palm trees swaying in the cool breeze which creates an exotic environment for the travellers to laze around. The serene beauty of the beach due to its white sands and quiet blue water is worth experiencing and enjoying.
4. Diu Fort
Fort Diu, located on the Western coast of Indian was built by Portuguese during their colonial rule and is now under the administration of Indian government. The fort- cum - castle, is known as 'Praça de Diu' in Portuguese, is situated on the southern tip of Gujarat and is at the mouth of the Gulf of Khambhat. The Fort of Diu is a colossal structure that occupies a prominent place on the tourist's list. The enchanting fort commands a magnificent view of the sea, and a jetty constructed on the northwestern coast is still under use and was once used to trade with Cambay, Broach and Surat in Gujarat. The lighthouse that one can climb leads to the highest point on the island and provides a spectacular view of the surrounding. Cannonballs litter the entire place, and the parapet has a fantastic array of cannons.
5. Sunset Point
A beautiful hillock located near the Chakritirath beach in Diu, offers its visitors a mesmerizing view of sunset from here. The hillock and the surrounding areas have been beautifully landscaped and illuminated. Chakratirth Beach is centrally located and contiguous to the Diu Town.

Diu India | How to visit Diu | Top tourist places to visit in Diu

Diu is an excellent new year / winter tourist destination. Top places to visit in Diu are given below. It's natural beauty is just similar to Goa with advantage of less crowded beach and comparatively economical hotels & resorts.
Though it's connectivity is an issue, it is neither well connected with rail nor with flight. only one set of flight is available from Mumbai. Its nearest railway station is UNA but very few trains touches UNA. The best way is to get down at Somnath railway station and pick up taxi to Diu [75 Km from Somnath, charged Rs. 1800/- to drop at Diu (full taxi)].
Places to visit at Diu- Nagoa Beach (main attraction), St Paul's Church, Diu museum, INS Khukhari, Naida caves, Gomtimata beach, Fortress, Jalandhar beach (sunset point).
It is also a good idea to come to Dwarka by train, visit Dwarkadheesh temple, Bhet dwarka, Nageshwar Jyotirling in one and half day then pick train to Somnath at 20:30 , get down at Somnath. One can plan to visit Gir forest which is at 2 hours road journey from Somnath, after visiting the tiger safari, reach Diu by evening. At Diu, apart from main beach Nagoa, the remaining items can be covered in 3-4 hours. It is recommended to hire a two wheeler for roaming around the city area for commuting. An active is available at Rs.400-500/- per day. The hotels/ resorts are also very economical as compared to Goa. In peak period of 25-27 Dec' 2019 I could get Palm beach resort @ Rs.5000/- per day. It is an average type of resort with fair amenities, (with Bar). The other items includes a museum, St Paul's Church, A fort, Cave, INS Khukhari Museum, sunset point, Gomti mata beach. On the last day I checked out at 11 a clock , dropped our luggage at the hotel counter. After visiting the places in the city area, we hired a taxi @ Rs.1500/- (a Maruti Ertiga) to drop at Somnath Railway station. We reached Somnath at around 7:30 in the evening , checked in officer's rest house on first floor of station building it self. Since the Somnath temple timing is from 6:00 to 22:00, we visited the temple at around 8:30. A very good light and sound show is organised daily (ticket is Rs.30/- only) at the temple, of 30m duration. After the darshan and light and sound show, came back to rest house in the night. Morning at 9:30 boarded Jabalpur express.
