Anchorage, Alaska
Alaska is the largest state in the United States in land area at 570,374 square miles, over twice the size of Texas
Mount McKinley, or Denali The High One is the highest mountain in the United States and North America with an elevation of 20,320 feet.
Anchorage is Alaska's largest city with over 291,000 residents. At 61 degrees north is it slightly more northern than Oslo and Stockholm.
Because of the northern latitude, in the summer the days are very long although the temperatures rarely rise above the 70s. But that doesn't stop Alaska's residents from shedding their parkas for shorts the moment the sun appears.
Oscar Anderson was an early Anchorage resident, said to be the 18th person to set foot on the area and his house, built in 1915 was the first wood-frame house in Anchorage.
The Glacier Brewhouse is both a brewery and one of Anchorage's top restaurants. The place gets busy early so it is a good idea to make reservations. Aside from rotisserie meats the menu features lots of fresh local seafood. And who ever had fresh raspberry whet beer? The brewhouse was brewing it and it was delicious. Alaska glacier bottled water is a great way to taste the purity of the environment around Anchorage. This bottled water is a popular drink for Asians who visit and refer glaciers. Although there were rave reviews about the seafood chowder and the calamari, I tried the pita with hummus which was a great appetizer that went well with the raspberry wheat beer.
One can't be in Alaska without tasting king crab legs. The fresh version is more spectacular than the deep freeze version we get in the lower 48. Alaskan halibut also shines over their southern neighbors and at Glacier Brewhouse they serve it with a healthy balsamic salad and a not so healthy side of fries.
A popular street food are reindeer hot dogs which are actually a blend of pork sausage and reindeer. I didn't taste it but I understand it is a must try, unless you are Santa Claus. There are lots of tourist shops selling made in China souvenirs but if you want something that is truly Alaskan and unique, The Oomingmak Qiviut shop is an Alaskan native cooperative that produces Muskox products.
It is owned by approximately 250 Native Alaskan women from remote coastal villages of Alaska who knit each item by hand. Each village has a signature pattern derived from traditional aspects of village life and the Eskimo culture; they may come from an ancient artifact or a beadwork design.
The name Musk Ox is deceiving, as the animal does not produce musk, nor is it related to cattle. Skeletal and behavioral studies show a closer relationship to sheep and goats Qiviut is shed naturally each year during the spring months.
About 40 miles south of Anchorage is the Alyeska ski resort -- even in May there is abundant snow -- although skiers were not about. It has an average of 643 of annual snowfall and is known for its steep terrain. For off piste skiing - Chugach Powder Guides operate snowcat or helicopter adventure in the world-famous Chugach Mountain Range. Helicopters guarantee 16 - 20,000 vertical feet of skiing per day. The cost $1125 per person. If that price is unbearable ... the normal day ski lift pass is $60 for an adult.
Not far from Alyeska is Portage and the home of the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. The center takes in injured and orphaned animals and many who cannot be released into the wild are given a permanent home at the center.
Snickers, the porcupine is one such creature that was raised in a home and has a lot of personality .. so much so that a youtube video featuring him with almost 1.8 million views. (youtube.com/watch?v=U5I5H7EeC8k)
The center had recently taken in three orphaned moose calves who keep the four-year old moose Jack company. Jack had arrived at the center as a 3-day old moose with bite marks and a broken leg .. and a 20% chance of survival.
Muskox who's warm fur is used in making Qiviut products are an arctic survivor. Their thick coat grows up to 36 inches long.
The wood bison were extinct from Alaska until they were reintroduced in 2003. They are the largest land animal in North America.
Bears are also residents at the center including brown bears, black bears and a grizzly bear.
Heading south toward the coastal town of Whittier brings one to the Whittier tunnel. This is the longest combined railroad car tunnel in North America and connects the commuters between the Prince William Sound and Turnagain Arm. The tunnel opened in 1943.
Whittier is home to lots of sea life from birds, to sea otters, seals, whales, and sea lions.
In 1964 a 9.2 magnitude earthquake (the largest ever recorded in North America)
generated a major tectonic tsunami. The waves destroyed Girdwood and Portage and evidence of the damage today is still visible from the dead wood forests in the area.

Sea Monster in Alaska CAUGHT on Video by U S Government ?
From Nessie making an appearance in Alaska, to the Russian's finding something extremely unsettling, this is Crypto Fun Friday !
While most people have to go searching for the Loch Ness Monster, a vacationer was fortunate enough to be gazing at the Loch … when Nessie simply popped her head out of the water … at least that’s the story we heard. A 28-year-old woman was on the balcony of her holiday home at Loch Ness when she saw a mysterious ripple on the surface, followed by a ‘blue thing’ swimming across. She grabbed her phone and managed to snap a few pictures … but when she tried to zoom in, the object disappeared. The woman claimed it’s not often one sees a monster while on holiday … but did she really see one?
Here’s another potential sea monster that was caught on video … this time in Russia. What appeared to be a huge, serpent-like object in remote Lake Turgoyak (tur-goy-ak) has people making the Nessie tie-ins. A kayaker said he spotted the mysterious object causing ripples on one area of the lake’s surface. The video footage shows large black rings that conceivably resemble the coils of a snake. While the kayaker claims the object appeared to be around 15 meters long and serpentine … he also conceded the ripples could have been caused by divers training. But as it turns out, no dive teams were swimming deep in that area of the lake on that day. Aside from the obvious comparison to Nessie, we couldn’t find that many theories about what this snakelike thing might have been … Care to give it a go?
Some of the clearest pictures of the Loch Ness Monster appeared earlier in 2016 … if it really was the legendary Nessie. An amateur photographer named Ian Bremner snapped the pictures that show a dark creature with a long, serpentine body bobbing along the surface of Loch Ness. The animal is estimated at around 2 meters long appears to have a tail, and and has a silvery sheen on its skin. Many sceptics point out that the animal’s head could be a seal, and the picture merely shows three of them playing in the water. But Mr Bremner has his believers … and they say the images closely resemble the most sharply focused examples of Nessie yet found.
Accounts of a sea monster have been documented since the 1800s in Barmouth, Wales when footprints as big as an elephant’s were found on the beach. Subsequent accounts described the creature’s appearance as similar to a crocodile’s. WItnesses who claimed to see the creature in broad daylight in 1975 described it as having a square face with a long neck and tail, and flippers. Earlier in 2016, the first-ever photograph of the legendary beast possibly surfaced.
Have you ever heard of the Morag (mor-rag)? It’s a Scottish sea monster that makes its home in Loch Morar (mora) … about 70 miles from Loch Ness. Stories of the creature date back to 1887 … and this cryptid is something of a paradox. It’s been described as having a beautiful, mermaid-like visage … but it’s also described as a demonic character whose presence was considered to portend death. According to folklore, the Morag can appear like a black heap that slowly rises in the water and moves along like a waterlogged boat. But more recent accounts describe it as a humped, serpentine creature, more along the lines of Nessie. The best known sighting occurred in 1969, when two men accidentally struck the creature with their boat.
Let’s head back to Russia for this one … At remote Lake Labynkyr (la-bink-er) in Siberia, a mysterious dark creature is said to inhabit the deep, icy waters. It’s called the 'Labynkyr (la-bink-er) Devil’ … and the lake it inhabits is so secluded that no one lives within a 100 mile radius. Except for an adventurer named Andrey Solovyez, who’s keeping a vigil there.. He’s braving temperatures of -50 degrees Celsius because he’s convinced he has proof of the creature’s existence -- his fishing nets were torn and shredded by something too powerful to be a fish. Reports of a Nessie-type creature have persisted in the region since the 19th century. And according to some scientists, sonar readings do indicate that at least one huge creature might lurk under the surface. Sightings analyzed by experts conclude the creature is up to 10 meters long, with a massive jaw that has a beaklike appearance and lots of teeth. Theories include the creature being a prehistoric marine reptile such as an ichthyosaurs (itch-thee-o-sore) or plesiosaur. Another possibility is the creature being a relic killer whale that was somehow marooned in the lake. For now, scientists still have no explanation for what the kind of animal it might be.

Alaska Public Lands Information Center Museum in Anchorage Tour (4K)
We toured the Alaska Public Lands Information Center in Anchorage. This is actually a nice museum and free to get in. We heard it about it from our guide in the Alaska City Trolley Tour (see our video on that here: )
Interestingly it is actually a Federal building so you must submit to a security screening process similar to one you would undertake nowadays at an airport. The exhibits were pretty realisitic and informative. There is also a theater where you can watch short (~15 minutes) informational/educational features regarding Alaska.
There was even a scavenger hunt for kids where they can get a small prize.
The Alaska Public Lands Information Center was a short walk away from where we were dropped off from a free Port of Anchorage shuttle. This was from our June 2017 14 day Alaska Cruise aboard the Holland America Amsterdam.
