DIVING in KEY LARGO !! LIVING OUR BEST LIFE / SHARKS !!!
This week we decided to head down to Key Largo and work our way through the Keys this year. It was amazing, the water was so clear and beautiful. It was exactly what a post card would look like. I now have a new found respect and desire to dive in open waters and will be focusing on getting my own equipment.
Captain Slate was who we dove with along with his daughter Sky. I highly recommend working with them.
Here is a little about Key Largo.
Key Largo is the first of the fabulous Florida Keys and is the self-proclaimed Dive Capital of the World. It is home to the world's largest artificial reef, the 510-foot USS Spiegel Grove, the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and the African Queen. Everglades National Park is just a short trip away from Key Largo.

Christ of the Abyss with Ocean Divers Key Largo Florida 2017
Earth is Heaven
Ocean Divers Key Largo Florida provides a great opportunity for beginner divers to moved by the beauty of the ocean.
Christ of the Abyss is a 8 1/2 foot, 4,000 pound bronze sculpture of Jesus Christ that stands in 25 feet of water off of Key Largo, Florida. It is located near Dry Rocks, about six miles east-northeast of the Key Largo Cut, in the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
This reef is a very shallow dome shaped reef which breaks the surface at low tide on the landward side, and slopes to 25 feet on the seaward side. The statue is one of three cast from a mold by an Italian sculptor Guido Galletti. It was originally made for Egidi Cressi, the dive equipment manufacturer and later donated to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in 1966.
The original Il Christo Degli Abissi statue was placed in the Mediterranean Sea off Genoa, Italy, in 1954. In 1961, a second statue Christ of the Deep was cast from the same mold. The Cressi family of Italy donated the statue to the Underwater Society of America, which in turn donated it to the Florida State Park Service, in recognition of the conservation efforts involved in the creation of America's first underwater park.
The Christ Statue is one of the most famous and visited underwater sites on earth, accessible to divers and snorkelers alike! Shallow high profile spur and groove coral formations are surrounded by relatively flat, coral and sponge encrusted hard bottom, and sand. Large Spotted Eagle Rays and Southern Stingrays are often sighted near the sandy perimeter.

In this video:
On this trip we start out EARLY. We wake up at 5am here in Key Largo and prepare to go offshore for swordfish. Ever since my first swordfish I have been thinking about landing the monster swordfish. I also keep thinking about that catch n cook I did. But do not fear! As you see in this videos title it is indeed a catch and cook!
We run out of taverneir creek which is just south of key largo florida. I actually put fuel into the boat and oil at the tavernier creek marina. Now my boat is full of gas and she is ready to go fishing offshore out in the Atlantic.
Out at floyds wall we deep drop for swordfish. Lots and lots of dropping the deep drop rig down and bringing it up. Man time sure flies fast out here way offshore in the atlantic. The north side of floyds wall is where I caught my first swordfish so we hope to catch a second.
Then we move to the key largo humps to some numbers I received from FLfishingspots.com I am happy I have those numbers because there are some MONSTER fish there. You will see what I mean by monster fish. But as the sun is almost down we decide to stop at the key largo patch reefs. Man i'm already hungry at this point just thinking about some beer battered fish.
We mark fish on the sonar and anchor in about 50-60 feet of water. Turn on the boat lights and start to chum. We catch lots of yummy snapper which we will turn into some beer battered fish in this catch n cook episode.
Wow today was a super long day of fishing out of Key Largo Florida. We don't get cooking until about 1-2am. We are super tired but will go fishing again tomorrow morning and it will be another catch and cook!
If you enjoyed this video hit that like button and subscribe to my channel, I appreciate all the help you guys give me in the comments and look forward to making many more videos to help show how to catch fish.

Key Largo Coral Reefs: Hurricane Irma Aftermath 2017
Key Largo Coral Reefs: Hurricane Irma Aftermath 2017
Key largo did not receive a direct hit, but with hurricane force winds and the resulting wave action pounding the reefs, I was very interested in getting back out to see what it all looked like. This video includes footage from Molasses reef and Sand Island Reef on December 23rd 2017 (about 3 months after the Hurricane).
The descriptions and possible causes presented in this video are based on talks with our dive masters and observation. There is little published research yet, so I will definitely be back with more solid info at a later date.
Either way, it is obvious the reefs have undergone significant change in some locations, and in other areas, the corals survived surprisingly well. Our dive masters expressed their belief that a lot of the sand was removed from Molasses Reef, leaving bare/rock/rubble bottom. I definitely see how they could say that, but it also looks like corals were hammered to pieces in some areas as well.
The fish assemblages have changed a lot as well...there are many more than I remember before, but that could be just circumstantial.
The Florida Keys reef track has been undergoing a stressful few years with widespread bleaching and disease impacting the coral. Add on a hurricane and I do worry about the reef track as a whole.
Hurricanes can actually be good for a coral reef. Broken fragments of coral will get redistributed and start growing in new areas, causing a rejuvenation of sorts. But when the water quality and conditions are not conducive to coral growth, it makes me more difficult.
I was encouraged by seeing large stands of Elkhorn still intact, and broken fragments beginning to grow where they landed…. This is nature’s way and hopefully will lead to a rebuilding of coral.
Either way, these were great dives filled with a high diversity of fish and marine life.
Until next time!
P.S.: I did delete the first posting of this video as I needed to make a few corrections.
